  1. "The transgender lawyer" sounds like a book I might write to earn me some easy bucks in these confusing times. "The transgender lawyer was being followed, he was certain of it, she quickly ducked inside a women's bogs to lose her assailant, much to the distress of a started old lady who'd just pissed herself. Quickly and with purpose she stepped outside only to find her shadow was waiting for her. "You wouldn't hit a woman would you?" She said. The shitbag looked confused, she used the opportunity to kick him square in the bollocks with her size 12 Timberlands. "I know that hurts- you cunt." She walked off and into the courtroom. "Mister Broomhead you are late and in contempt!" The judge thundered. "Sorry judge I was having hot flushes and I request an adjournment as I'm on the blob." "The fuck?" The judge said incredulously. Then without warning the court clerk whispered something to him and gave him a copy of the Guardian. "Ah yes I see, case dismissed." An hour later the transgender lawyer was playing golf at the all male golf club. "I can't believe you swung it." Said Kevin, his best golfing buddy, self made plumber and working class Tory twat. "Sometimes justice is a woman, sometimes it's a man, and sometimes it's non binary" he replied. "Let's go to the 19th hole and look at the barmaid's tits."

  2. People just get on with it every day, get on with fitting in, get in with putting up with people who think their thoughts should have any relevance to other people's personal choices or how they can earn a living (I mean, for fuck's sake...). There are issues with safeguarding children from making drastic life-changing decisions before they have any real-life experience. There are issues with safeguarding society's vulnerable from those who want take advantage of people's trust to abuse others. There are issues with people who push their subcultural identity to clear extremes while simultaneously demanding unquestioning acceptance from mainstream culture. These are not exclusively transgender issues. Neither is struggling for respect and not being treated with common decency while trying to "just get on with it" every day while living a life they are content with. Still it seems an alien concept to those who'd prefer to deal in caricature than reality. And no, I'm not transgender - or gay, queer, non-binary or any of that - but I do think people like Linehan have fallen into the trap of reducing the conversation to a few select issues which drives fear and distrust over the simple fact that these are people's lives and most people want to just get on with it. Most of them harmless, a few of them not. Like everyone else. If there's a correlation between these choices and historical psychological trauma, it deserves empathic study and proper consideration, not off-hand dismissal and further marginalisation. Not like it's all one-sided though, there's mob-handedness all over social media. It smothers good faith, polarises debate and kills benefit of the doubt.

  5. I think linehan is supporting a valid fight, against people who are pushing because they feel it’s a fight they can win. Doesn’t necessarily make it the right fight however, and I have full open support for anyone in a position where they are affected by identity issues, not at the sake of any other section of society. there are people who are pushing for equal access to female only facilities, who not only have a set of bollocks (and this is the important part, not the belles), but have no intention of transitioning, they should be allowed their own privacy and their own spaces, but not at the expense of those with female genitalia. and the same for people in the opposite transport, strangely there is a lot less noise in that area.

  7. I can accept non-binary choices quite happily, but it comes with the agreement that there is male and femal as per the ability to reproduce, and then other categories outside of this. As such; those first 2 categories are offered as much protection and right to exist as all other categories, and if you choose to identify as another category, that is fine but your choice does not allow you to intrude upon the rights of the other categories. In short, support transgenderism, but believe natal women are allowed the right to exclude others from certain environments and those others will include transgender folk. Equally, transgender folks can exclude natal women and men from their chosen spaces. its pretty fucking easy, non binary - sure, just allow the difference, and don’t claim to be seen as exactly the same.

  9. The least polluting countries in the world are, by and large, the Scandi countries. Just as they are top of the list for pretty much all the other measures of a good country. Presumably you're arguing in favour of more left wing economics. In which case, agreed.

  10. After a hectic week or so, I'm going to get back to this, thanks to some fancy new earphones and a lazy weekend. AOW - Adore - Smashing Pumpkins I feel I should preface this by stating I've never been a fan of the band. It's not that I actively dislike them, more they've passed me by, perhaps with the odd song that piques my interest, but never really making enough of an impact to force me to pick up an album. Thankfully, a Spotify subscription and the good people of the GF Music Review Club are rectifying that. Preamble bollocks over with, onto the album: To Shiela - Nice soft acoustic guitar. Billy Corgan’s voice is delicate, it has a soporific effect but doesn’t progress into anything, remaining relaxed and dream-like. Strange opener, an atmosphere I associate more with an ending track to bring the tempo down. Ava Adore - This has a bit more of an industrial edge. “Pull your crooked teeth, you’ll be perfect just like me” is a great line, though I'm not finding Corgan’s voice has the gravitas to hold a punchy moment without the guitar crunching in at the same time to do most of the heavy lifting. Perfect - I'm hearing an air of The Cure’s Just Like Heaven. If anything, the thought helps me get into the album a bit more; get out of the rock mindset, and more into a Cure mood. Daphne Descends - I like the rhythm of the drums, a good beat to nod along to. Once again, the floaty vocals - elongating the words - lends an ethereal feel to things. Once Upon A Time - A fairytale tune cements that sense. Lyrically this is my cup of tea, more story-like. A lovely little track, definitely the high point thus far. If I had any criticism it’d be that it goes on a shade too long, but that feels like quibbling. Tear - Talking of too long, this is a shade under six minutes and I'm not sure it does anything to justify that. If anything gets in my way of like SP, it’s that everything is delivered by Corgan in such a long fashion as to mean I’m itching for that climax to a track that never materialises. Crestfallen - Back to the fairytale feel. I feel harsh saying it's just filler, but straight away I'm expecting the next track to be more uptempo. Appels + Oranjes - As if on cue, the faster paced, slightly dance inspired track enters, though it leaves me thoroughly cold. Pug - The album’s definitely taking a more experimental turn here; more dance-influenced, industrial, electro, maybe proto-post-punk (is that even a term?). Interesting, but not enough to get its hooks into me. The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete - This is more me. It feels like a pleasant murder ballad, with the juxtaposition of darker lyrics ("Disaster and love, vengeance and dust") that could've been penned by Nick cave, against the backdrop of light guitar strums. Annie-Dog - Probably the first track where Corgan's mixed up his vocal delivery style. Very low key, no straining to pull the most from every vowel. I prefer this, it gives more weight to the lyrics in my view. Very intimate, like a bedroom demo. Shame - 6:38 - Back to Corgan’s usual style, and no surprise it makes it the longest track thus far. My issue is it never goes anywhere. Behold! The Night Mare - Some interesting sounds layered on one another, very experimental. The change-up at 2:10 of acoustic guitar and harmony is simply beautiful, I’d really like to hear more of that. For Martha - A nice piano instrumental intro, leading into a decent track. The slow pace hints that the album's coming to a close now, but at over eight minutes it's certainly not going out fast. Blank Page - The piano is clearly the preferred instrument of the album's exit. One of my favourite tracks, the lyrics may be a touch trite in places but it hits the right notes for a melancholic farewell. 17 - Ooh, the hiss of an aged recording. I've no idea what’s going on, I assumed it might have only been 17 seconds long, but according to Spotify the track’s 19 seconds. ----------------------------------------------- I'm glad I was forced to give some Smashing Pumpkins a go, but sadly I'm no closer to really "getting" them. I come away with the sense that this is an album where, to fully appreciate it, you have to know what came before, to give it some context. It strikes me that, key to the band's success, is Corgan's distinctive delivery style, something which irks me slightly. I could easily get past that were the tracks to culminate in some kind of crescendo, but I usually end up hearing the outro with a sense of disappointment, as the tracks never progress into something that has a clear climax moment; like a sneeze that tickles the nose, but never arrives to give you that sense of momentary satisfaction. I didn't dislike it though, so I feel a slightly apathetic 6/10 is apt from me.
