Do you think he'd be tall enough to play there? Bit of googling suggests he's 5"11. You don't see many centre halfs under 6"2 I'd say these days. But look at someone like Cannavaro. If you've got good positioning, you're strong and aggressive in the air, then why not.

 

Flanagan reminds me a bit of Steve Finnan, the kind of steady Eddie type. However the modern game seems to require very attacking full backs who want to bomb forward all the time. I wonder if Flanagan might end up as a centre half, either here or elsewhere.

Steve Finnan was more than a steady player, he was the best crosser of a ball at the club while he was here, excellent fullback IMO

He looks a solid enough well rounded player. Id like to see him go out on loan somewhere to get regular games.

 

The modern game might be his killer though. Full backs now are supposed to be great going forward with them costing the side goals being over looked.

Are you fucking nuts!? He doesnt have the build for a centre back. And I'd be surprised if he is 5 11. Wouldnt be the first time a player's height had been exaggerated by a club.

Would rather see him in the middle of the park. He played there for the reserves a couple of times last seasons for the reserves and against Valencia, and he did well. Should try to put him beside Coady in the u21's

I think it's a bit of a disservice to call Steve Finnan a 'steady Eddie', to be honest. I thought he was a cracking players and, in my opinion, our best right back since Rob Jones (although Arbeloa does run him close). Great crosser of the ball with either foot, also.

Shoulda went on loan this season, probably to Bolton or Blackpool, no way he'll get games unless there's serious injury crisis

Loan with an option to recall him. Even if it was League 1 he needs to be playing every week against pros for us to see how he'll go.

Finnan was boss, that cut back, ball in with his left foot. Crouchy loved it.

 

arbeloa was class too, I think he's shown how good he is by starting for Real week in week out

It was a shame for both him and us that he got hit by that debilitating disease, but like you say, he really was a pleasure to watch that treble-winning year, lots of good memories.

I can't see it to be honest. I reckon he will be a useful player for somebody, just not us.

 

I'd say he's of a level equal to most of our academy graduates of the last 20 years like spearing, Guthrie, Steven Wright, Davey Thomson, Alan Navarro, Warnock, Mellor and a whole fuckload of others who have failed to make the grade here but have gone on to have good careers in the game.
