Surely there’s always been a benefit for long drivers?

You can’t penalise a guy for being better than the others.

Agreed. He took a studious approach and figured out what was the best way to give himself an advantage. He piled out weight, got stronger and increased his distance. Why should he be penalised for that?

How you make fantastic old courses still relevant is a different matter.

It's a problem as these really long hitters are making mincemeat of tough courses now. Maybe some bunkers need to be relocated another 50 yards up the fairway as traps that used to be in play are no longer even relevant.

I don't think he's necessarily better, just stronger. Somebody posted about the golf ball being the culprit for the stupidity in today's golf and Jack Nicklaus said the same a few years back so there must be some truth in it. The problem is that the PGA Tour courses are just too easy for the modern golfers and need completely redesigning. Technology for the pros has completely outran these 200 year old courses. The only time they seem to struggle in US golf is when the wind blows and the weather is bad and this rarely happens over there.

This one was certainly not too easy, only Bryson Dechambeu scored under par.

My fellow Norwegian ruined his chances on the last three holes, going five over with two double bogeys and a bogey.

He could have finished 3rd if that did not happen.

This is spot on. Will just say that Bryson isn't just some long drive competition hitter though, he's quite talented. But the difference between being the decent player he was to now #1 in the world caliber is the distance he has gained.

But yeah, the equipment has gone too far. That's very clear. The skill obviously isn't totally gone from the professional tour, it also takes ability to hit it long, but it sucks watching golf that is in the majority guys hitting it in the rough mega far, bypassing any kind of obstacle, and hitting a wedge into the green.

The technology that may improve the pros 1% and improve the amateur 10-15% but its still far more beneficial to the pros as they do it for a living.
