Great Documentaries

Enron:The Smartest Guys In The Room.

Not a very surprising documentary to those of us who are completely cynical about the modern version of capitalism but still very well made and interesting. It was Enron who got Schwarzenegger elected Governor of California and their CEO is a close friend of the Bush family(hardly surprising that his government did them plenty of favours too.)

The One PerCent

Documentary made by the Grandson of the Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceuticals company about the all time high wealth gap between the rich and poor in the USA. 1 PerCent of the USA own more than more of 90 percent of the rest.

Some good interviews with the wealthy showing their massive lack of self awareness and attitude of selfishness and arrogant towards their fellow citizens.

Bill Gates father,Gates Snr spoke a hell of a lot of sense too and put the other interviewees to shame with his sensible and level headed opinions regarding taxation. In stark contrast to a Nobel Prize winning economist,Milton Friedman. If he can win a Nobel Prize then I'm seeking a nomination in the next wave of votes!

They still wont admit that Socialism is whats needed though and hate using the word, which they dont understand is not the same as Communism,at least the way it was in the USSR anyway.

Highly recommended by me.

Just watched most of that one percent. Strange documentary. The wealth some people have is obscene nobody should have that but I've no problem with there still being rich people I think success should be rewarded but obviously there's a limit. One of the problems is these mega rich have so much influence and money they basically have all the laws made and broken on their say so. Its too much. We have to remove the money and lobbying from politics. The whole donations bullshit has to stop, that documentary showed two brothers one brother backed one candidate financially and the other brother funded the other candidate, they both got what they wanted in the end. the game is so rigged and it was clear as day, yet its damn near impossible to drag yourself out of the gutter because the system is against you every step of the way.

I don't think most of those one percenters were bad people, they where born into money and are products of their environment much as people who are born in slums end up being products of theirs. Some of them clearly have the guilt of being rich but the fear of not being that rich. Their attitude to the poverty around them was akin to fast forwarding the adverts asking for donations for starving children. The greed of them pisses me off but its human I'm far more pissed of at the politicians who have enabled and promoted such greed they should be in place to govern a fairer society, its their duty instead they betray the majority, they talk of values and condemn people to work insane hours just to barely afford the basics whilst protecting and enriching those who don't need protecting, who don't need to work so much they only see their kids on their random days off but are too fucked to give them the attention they need. Capitalism or a form of it would work fine if more of society had integrity and a sense of justice.

As humans we have made money and the want of it our sole being, it totally dominates every single aspect of life. I remember reading a comment I think it was fucking joe rogan or someone saying we are a talking monkey on an organic spaceship flying through the universe. Somehow as a species we've taken a miracle, something exciting and made it into a chore. people need to work less and spend more time with family and friends or even alone time. The government needs to make the well being of its people as important as enriching those who are already rich. I do think the people need to remind the government we are the boss and being voted in doesn't give you leeway to do what the fuck you please.

The Redemption of General Butt Naked‏

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1733679/

I think this was originally screened at the Sundance before being shown on C4 sometime ago. Well worth a look albeit through closed fingers at times. It concerns one Joshua Milton Blahyi aka General Butt Naked (for reasons that become obvious) a crazed, psychopathic, murderous warlord. A proficient and prodigiously skilled killer himself, he was also a mass recruiter, armourer and commander in chief of his own army of drug-crazed child soldiers thought to be responsible for deaths of many thousands during the Liberian civil war. He has since renounced his former day job and become a self-ordained evangelical minister. Truly disturbing on many levels and invites the viewer to re-examine their previous notions of truth, redemption, reconciliation and justice? Let alone their own conclusion as to the veracity of General Butt Naked's personal epiphany/epiphanies.

1988 BBC Arena documentary on the life of Woody Guthrie

Was knocked out when I first saw it at the time and have watched it many times since.

Still one of the best I've ever seen, Great cameo from Pete Seeger about half way through

If you enjoyed 'Standing in the Shadows of Motown', 'The Wrecking Crew' and the more recent 'Muscle Shoals' documentary, this also gives you some insight of who and what lies behind the scenes in the studios. It tells some of the stories of the seldom seen backing singers whose talent often surpasses that of the major talent they carry. Stunning, fascinating and thoroughly toe-tapping-tastic. If your a lover of music and this doesn't leave you with goosebumps you've already lost your mojo.

10/10

Yes, it's that good.

"Apocalypse: World War I"

All archival footage, some of it colourized, with a narrator over top.

The imagery is fantastic. I had seen very little of it before.

(Camels in the snow as the Turks attack the Russians right at this moment.)

It's showing now as a series on TV Ontario and in France. Well worth a look if it comes your way.

Absolutely riveting isn't it ? I sit there gobsmacked at the rare and (for me) unseen footage with its excellent narration, providing real continuity on a subject that is a minefield to negotiate.

The series is outstanding. Quality entertainment.

Salute - documentary about Australian athlete Peter Norman, who was stood on the podium as a silver medallist when the Americans Tommie Smith and John Carlos did their 'Black Power' salute at the 1968 Olympics. It details how Norman was an advocate for human rights, how he empathised with the two Americans, and how he was treated afterwards because of that. Norman died in 2006 and both Smith and Carlos were pallbearers at his funeral.
