Great Documentaries

Watched the incredible Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills the other week and it's got me on a real documentary film kick. Probably the greatest I've ever seen was Dear Zachary and there have been some top class BBC docs like The Hunt For Britain's Paedophiles and Nazis: A Warning From History. Currently trying to watch as many as possible (the grimmer the better) so any recommendations?

Food Inc. is a pretty good documentary on the American food industry.

The Cove is a film about the dolphin hunting in Japan in which the fella who trained the dolphins who played in the Flipper series in the 60's.

A big favourite of mine is the French documentary Winged Migration (Le Peuple Migrateur) in which they follow the migration of different kinds of birds over all of the continents.

Try 'documentaryheaven.com', great website which allows you to watch documentaries for free. As for recommendations, ESPN's 'the two escobars' is a great watch; 'When we were kings' is also another great sporting documentary, about the Ali vs Foreman fight in Zaire.

I've heard good things about Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple

Been meaning to watch more documentaries myself, but my laptop is on its last legs and struggles to run anything decent, including most programmes, so unless they're on youtube I can't watch them. And even then I have to use the PS3 browser to get youtube up.

I'll just c&p what I wrote in the other thread.

"Brother's Keeper 9/10. Great and quite sad documentary about the Ward brothers. Directed by Joe Berlinger & Bruce Sinofsky who also directed Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills & Paradise Lost 2: Revelations.

Can't wait to see their new HBO documentary Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory which have been made after the West Memphis Three got released from jail after nearly 20 years."

edit: Capturing the Friedmans is brilliant.

Earthlings - about animal rights etc is pretty grisly and eye-opening.

Promises - About Palestinian and Israeli kids being mates etc is really good.

Death in Gaza - Slightly similar to the above, but all from the Palestinian side, and is a true story about the killing of British journalists at the hands of the Israeli army.

Senna - is awesome.

The Cove - is also awesome.

Pearl Jam - Twenty - If you like them, you will love it, very insightful into the scene at the time.

I tend to go to IMDB and look up the top rated documentaries and try and work my way through them.

The War on Democracy is all about Americas involvement in the Latin American countries.

Its a real eye opener for the 9/11 mockers about just what America has been doing for decades now.

It shows what a bunch of arrogant arseholes the top people in the CIA etc are capable of doing, and how they will lie to the American public to achieve it.

It s a great watch but then most of John Pilgers docs are.

Gasland is another worth while watch about the fracking going on in America and the devastation it causes in the areas surrounding the fracking plants.

It has been given the greenlight recently in the UK for fracking to start properly over here.

If you enjoyed Paradise lost, try the Thin Blue line by Errol Morris, in fact try two others of his as well, Mr Death The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr. and Fog of War. I think they will be the sort of stuff you may well enjoy.

Hoop Dreams is also an oldie but a good watch. Bobby Fischer Against The World and The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters are newer but also worth a watch. The last one is more lighthearted but surreal in it's own way. Lots more I would suggest, will do another time.

Collection of everyone whoever fought Ali for the heavyweight championship. Very funny and very interesting.

That's an HBO series on some of the biggest fights of the last 30 years; the high standard of quality is pervasive, so you really should watch them all. Aside from the obvious - Hagler/Leonard, Leonard/Hearns, Hearns/Hagler - I thought the Bowe/Golota and Chavez/Taylor episodes were particularly brilliant. The Bowe/Golota episode also features the source of the most outstanding quote in sporting history.

Watched the Chavez/Taylor one a while ago after a recommendation from either you or PB15 I think it was. Great stuff.

Also mentioned at the time was 'Assault In The Ring' which although sounding like it could be hardcore porn is actually one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Even if you aren't a boxing fan, it's still well worth a watch.
