The man also known as Troy McClure, aka Lionel Hutz, aka Lyle Lanley, aka Miguel Sanchez was murdered 28/05/1998. The guy was to the Simpsons what John Candy was to John Hughes and Chris Columbus, usually the support character, the bit-part that stole the show, delivered ludicrously hilarious cameos and one-liners and brought real heart to every appearance. The guy just made me laugh, consistently, in every guise. Don't know much of his SNL stuff, maybe the Americans on here can attest to those performances.

 

As for the Simpsons, it's never recovered from his loss. Marge episodes used to usually mean Hartman episodes (Monorail, Chains, Realty, Selma gets married etc) and have become a major weak point in the show without Hutz/McClure/Lanley popping up.
