Lazio captain arrested in match-fixing investigation

The captain of Lazio has been arrested by police investigating claims of match-fixing.

Midfielder Stefano Mauri, 32, was held along with former Genoa midfielder Omar Milanetto, police said.

Officers are searching more than 30 homes, including those of players, trainers and administrators of clubs in Serie A, Serie B and lower divisions.

Five people were also arrested in Hungary on suspicion of being part of an illegal international betting ring.

Monday's operation was part of a wider investigation which has already seen a number of arrests of current and former Italian players. In June last year, the Interior Ministry set up a special match-fixing task force in response to a number of high profile cases.

Former Atalanta captain and Italy midfielder Cristiano Doni was banned for three-and-a-half years in August for his part in the 'Calcioscommesse' scandal involving Serie B matches last season. He was also arrested in December 2011 over match-fixing and betting allegations.

Atalanta, promoted from Serie B, were deducted six points in the top flight this season as a result of the scandal.

Former Lazio and Italy striker Giuseppe Signori was banned for five years and 15 other players were banned for between one and five years for their parts.

Mauri, who joined the Rome club from Udinese in 2006 and has 11 caps for Italy, made 16 league appearances last season as Lazio finished fourth in Serie A.

Milanetto, 36, signed for Serie B side Padova last summer after five years at Genoa and made 15 starts last season.

I think it's everywhere,I bet it goes on to some extent in the lower leagues over here.Might not be match fixing but first booking throw in etc.

Matt Le Tissier said once that him and load of Southampton players pooled their money and laid a shitload on there to be a throw in within the first ten seconds of one of their games once. Le Tissier said he was taking the kick off and, first time, just pinged it in the direction of the stands. Next thing he said was that Neil Shipperley- who wasn't in on the bet- suddenly came out of nowhere and decided that for that to be the first time ever he'd control a ball and keep it in play. He said that what ensued for the remainder of the time was like something out of a Benny Hill sketch with the Southampton players chasing down Shipperley to tell him to twat it out of play.

There was a similar instance in a game involving the Mancs, where the opposition (can't remember which team or player) booted the ball straight out of play from the kick-off.

Paul Kitson when he played for West Ham?

It seems crazier to think it's never happened here than it does to believe it has.

So much money at stake - it's almost inevitable.

I don't want to believe it. But when UEFA bosses are taking backhanders (proven) then I'm sure the lower ranks will have fancied a brown envelope from time to time.

I would be hugely disappointed if Conte had been at it - despite always following Milan in Serie A, I loved him as a player when he was at Juve.

Only way they'll ever come close to stamping this out is with a lifetime ban from any connection with the game for anyone found guilty - that means never coaching, never having a backroom job, no executive or non-executive role, not being authorised as an agent, not coaching your son's 5-a-side team, basically being told to get the fuck out of football and never darken its doors again.

Won't ever happen though and even if the authorities did bring a rule that draconian in, there would still always be someone willing to take the risk for the rewards on offer.

I hate this stuff, it goes against the whole ethos of sport.

Not just cos he's a grade A cunt but i genuinely think Howard Webb is as corrupt as they come. The fact that he's a copper too adds to it for me. Most cops are on the scam so in my mind he's corrupt. Is webb an italian name, say it is true.

No. Webb is not an italian name. It's a good old fashioned South Yorkshire name.

My Grandad is about 86. He's said to me he's convinced Manchester United are a gang of cheats and in a decade or two, when Ferguson is long gone, it will all come out. Now maybe he's off his head, which he is, but I'm inclined to agree with him.

I think many have thought the same - but it sounds bitter and jealous if anybody raises the notion.

I don't want to believe it of any club. But I think it's naive to totally discount it (of any club).

Quite a few years ago now - Man United were 'asked' to not play in the FA Cup, so that they could represent England in some World Club tournament in South America (from memory). There was a big hoohah about it, but in the end United went.

For me, that was the FA getting a 'favour' from United... and as soon as that happens - where's the return favour?

We've seen bungs going to FIFA.

We've actually seen United, JJB, Umbro, Sports Soccer and others found guilty of price prixing (on shirts), so clubs aren't above a bit of sharp practice and at worst illegal ones. Link here for nerdy readers.

It must be hard to get multiple referees on your side - that's what gives me hope it's not happening.

Last year, after every European game - United had a home game. ALL SIX games at home. Bloody slim odds if you ask me!

I saw Chelsea robbed against Barcelona a couple of years ago... decisions that were so shocking, you couldn't help but wonder...

Too much money in the game, too much at stake. It worries me a bit.

An outsiders honest perspective of Cunting Webb and That Fiend would be appreciated.

Personally, I think that they're as bent as China Town hooker.
