Running

I've only ever done tradmill running at the gym, 15 or 20 mins here and there until recently could never do much mure than that as my ankle would kill, and i'd walk with a limp the next day. I went to up and running in Bold Street and they done a gait analysis and when I watched back on the screen how I ran it was no wonder I was sore as I was rolling my ankle on every stride.

They fixed me up with a pair of Mizunos built to give me extra support when I run, cost me 100 notes, but worth every penny as over the last three weeks I've really upped my distances and i'm running a lot more outdoors than I was before.

My advice. Get good trainers!

This....meaning, go and get a pair properly fitted in a specialist running shop where they will ask you about your intended mileage etc and watch you run just as captainharris said

There are running threads, buggered if I can find them.

Since quitting smoking and putting weight on AND having a dodgy knee since last year I've done no running at all. A couple of friends of mine are running the York 10 in August and I'm gutted I'll be missing it. One of them has asked me to go & run round Roundhay Park lake (Leeds) with her tomorrow after work. I must be fucking mental. This could have "heart attack" written all over it.

Nice knowing most of you.

I too have a dodgy knee (mal-tracking patella) and have just downloaded the 'Endomondo' App and am walking 4.25miles everyday; I burn 560 calories in approx 1 hour 10 minutes (Cos I'm a fat 16 stone fucker), just from a steady walk of 15mins 30s per mile without the added worry of damaging my knee further. My physio also approves it.

If you walk everyday you will burn approx 3920 calories per week (a pound in weight = 3500 calories) so you lose over 4lb per month or 3.5 stone over a year!

Good luck fatty.

Now then ya chubby old cunt.

Is mal-tracking-patella pigspeak for "eats loads of pizzas"?

The run tonight will determine if I take up walking in place of running. I've got healthcare cover in this job so if it plays up after tonight I'm going to get booked into a specialist and have the surgery done if I need it. I really miss running. I like a walk too but I get bored. I'd have to join some walking club or something if I was just going to walk. Running is a solo activity I find.

Dearest Lurtz,

I have loved you for nearly 3 and a half years and have kept the pictures you have posted on here in a neat folder on my computer. What I'm saying is that all your pictures, over the years, strangely show a chubby 40 odd year old man in each one. Therefore I detect that you either run VERY slowly or are in fact telling lies to impress the chicks. Which one is it?

Kindest regards

You're right. I've been slightly chubby for a good while. I got considerably less chubby when I was running though. It's not something I've done for years, only about 18 months but I really got into it. Started running when I was with briefs and continued after we split up.

And if you're doing anything with my pictures I wouldn't approve of I'm going to have the Welsh police make you sign that register again.

By the way, what's the best Android running app about? I've used mytracks before which is decent. I don't really rate the calory burning apps as you keep burning calories way after you've finished your run.

Would be keen to know as people I have been doing my Moonwalk training with have been using different apps which strangely have tracked sometimes wildly varying distances. Would quite like to get one but its pointless if its telling you shite

Champ if you've got a gmail account mytracks sends a google map of your run with your time and a load of other stats. That way, if you do the same run / walk or several of the same you can tabulate and chart the data. Really cool stuff. That said, there are probably apps out there that do all the charty stuff for you.

I've never used it offroad though so will see if it tracks me at Roundhay Park tonight.

Arrr look. SL's left me a nice (predictable) tag.

You're fucked if you run on a treadmill then.

I use the Adidas MI Coach. It's quite good with the tracking aspect of it, plus it links through to an online account with lots of extras available. Plus you can choose training plans with the computer guiding you through your set routine (I can't be arsed with all that though, as long as it plays music and times me I'm happy)

Redder, just keep at it. As RJ already mentioned you'll find it tough going to begin with but then your body will suddenly adapt out of nowhere. The key is perseverance. Everyone's got to start somewhere and there isn't no shame in making the effort whilst your feeling it, at least your trying.

I'd personally enter a 5k or 10k race, may seem like a tough ask right now but it will keep you training away with an end goal in sight.

Before last year i'd always start running, then two weeks later I'd stop again with frustration as I hadn't seem to have made any progress. With only a few weeks training I could feel myself giving up so I entered a half marathon. I I've since done 3 half marathons with another 3 to go before the end of 2012 and I've entered the London Marathon ballet also with a eye open at next years New York Marathon.

If someone would have told me that this time last year I'd have laughed in their face.

The best reason for keeping on is the ultimate reason, feeling fitter and loosing weight. I've lost a stone and a half, whilst still drinking and smoking like a trooper. Haven't changed my lifestyle as my body's used to going out now but feel a hell of a lot more healthier than I did 12months ago!!.

Hope that helps.

Decent advice that Juniper but keep up old mate, I'm used to plenty of running, just out of practice over the last 18 months, have put some weight on after stopping smoking and have a bit of a dodgy knee.

Anyhoo, ran 1.5 miles tonight, fucking loved it but it hurt. I'm off out again on either Weds or Thurs to do the same again.

Get your knee checked properly Redder. I spent 19 years with a fucked knee from a car accident and was told I should expect to have a knee replacement when I was 50. Went to the doctor 2 years ago as it had forced me to change jobs twice from jobs I really enjoyed and sometimes it was so painfull I couldn't walk upstairs with the pain. I was looking at taking up cycling again as I wanted to quit smoking and it was an excersice I enjoyed with the added benefit of helping me lose weight. He organised for me to have it x-rayed which showed sweet fuck all so he booked me in to see a knee specialist who had an MRI done which also showed fuck all. The specialist told me to lose weight and there was nothing wrong with it. My doctor wasn't happy with the diagnosis so refered me to another hospital. They had another MRI done which was inconclusive so the specialist there, who knew my case as he was the registrar for the surgeon when put me back together in the first place and he used my leg as a test case, decided to do an athroscopy to see what was going on inside.

I had that done last October and on the op sheet when I came round it had dissection of medial plica written down. Apparently it's a common sports injury and can be caused by trauma to the knee which is how mine got damaged. Normally the medial plica attatches itself to the bottom of the femur causing the pain as it can't flex properly. When I had my 6 week check up he showed me the pictures of the inside of my knee and mine hadn't attactched to the femur it had snapped completely and was laying through the knee joint in between the cartilages causing the extreme pain.

When I asked how long ago this could have been sorted out he told me 6 months after I had the accident.

Go to the doctors and keep on at them until the do something about it. I went for 19 years with horrible pain that was gone the morning after the op. I still get twinges but that's to be expected for 12 months but if it carries on after that I have to go back.

Running causes massive pressures on the knee joint and can cause injuries like this that are easy to get sorted out. I didn't even have to use crutches when I left hospital I was told to walk and use it but not too much for the first week. Google medial plica there's a ton of info on this.

Hope this helps you out.

Cheers stoner. Worth knowing, that. I think the only trauma my knee's undergone is from taking up running in my 40's. It's not given me massive pain, it's just uncomfortable. It held up ok tonight though but my right calf absolutely fucking killed. Think I may be subconsciously running funny to protect my knee which is hurting the calf. I'm gonna keep this up as I really enjoyed tonight but I will get in to see a specialist sooner than later. Can you run / cycle ok now then?

I am back out running, aiming for a 10k sometime soon around Liverpool and depending how the summer goes I will aim for a half marathon around the November. Any suggestions of a programme to supplement my 5 aside three times a week. My main problem is the excess timber that I need to shed to increase my mileage (looking at about a stone), the fitness isn't the problem, its the pressure on knees and ankles. I got through 4.3 miles the other week in about 34 minutes at a nice steady pace with my brother, able to converse in parts and I certainly wasn't dying at the end of it.

I'd just do that three times a week (maybe twice if you're playing that game as well). Cut out as much fat and bread as you can and cut out beer during the week it should start falling off you. Good luck Mark.

I love to walk and will walk for miles no probs, helps me feel slightly better about myself after a feed of beer and fast food. Running however scares me. I have mates that run and they swear by it . At what stage does it become heart attack pain free cos every time I've tried it i'm fucked at around the 5 km stage and want to die.

I love running, less than 18 months ago I was running 10K once a week with a couple of 5ks thrown in too. Now I can't run without the impact and motion affecting my insides and I've given it up on medical advice which resulted in me putting on a few pounds and feeling decidedly worse for it. Tried to start up again a couple of months back but no luck, I reckon I'm going to have to go for a low impact exercise, probably cycling.

Start doing 3k a couple / three times a week and slowly build your distance. Should sort that out. At the start you shouldn't be in pain or forcing yourself too much. You should be able to hold a conversation for most of your run. No point killing yourself, you've proved yourself it makes you lose the enjoyment.
