Not really too fussed about getting into the royal/republican debate, but just wondered what people thought of the recent and quite rapid upsurge in support for all this type of fanfair?

I genuinely can't remember the golden jubilee in 2002, I know the silver one was a big thing and I'm sure we've all got family photos of it, but did anyone even do anything for the golden jubilee?

I'm all for people having a day off work, and I genuinely love the idea of street parties, I think anything that gets neighbours chatting to each other is great, the stronger communities are the less susceptible they are to crime etc.

But where has it all come from?

Is it somehow linked to the 'war on terror', similar the way there's been a massive upsurge in support for Poppy Day (a different thread that, perhaps), is it nationalism plain and simple?

Not sure where it's come from to be honest. Think it may be because of the economic problems this time around; perhaps to take people's minds off the recession, albeit for a few days. Also, we had the William/Kate wedding last year so it's just carrying on from that I guess.

Like you say, communities getting together is a great thing. I have never seen a street party myself, I think it'd be quite nice. (I have been invited to three different ones when Thatcher dies though)

Myself I'm not fussed either way on the royals thing. I think that people who would rather have the royals removed have got a good case, but equally so do those who would have them continue.

The way I see it we get some days off work and we can spend them how we wish, either revelling in the royals or ingnoring them. Everyone's a winner!

No,its not a way of distracting the population from the shitty way their way of living has gone down the pan in the last couple of years.

Lets pretend the ruling classes really give a shit about the man in the street and give them a couple of days off,if theyve got a job.

We might even believe they wont slip a couple of controversial bills through the House of Parliament or Lords during that period either.

I'll be getting the overtime in.
23.5 hours triple rate. Bam!

I think it's tied to the rise in nationalism in England over the last 5 years.
Rise in Nationalism? Certainly not where I live. Must be a regional thing. People give even less of a shit here than in the past as far as I can tell. Seen a little bit of cheap plastic flag selling in shops so far and that's it.

I love a pit of pomp me.

But I'm with Lenin on why: people escaping from the daily grind of a world continually under threat from the fearmongery of either environmental or economic holocaust. The latter a real worry in recent years. The former I can take or leave.

Sorry RK but that's utter nonsense.

Views on the monarchy aside, this is the only other diamond jubilee we've ever had other than Victoria. That's pretty big news even for a fence-sitter like myself so for those with more of a roayl bent, and the media, it's huge news.

My mum & dad were drawn tickets for that party at buck house. Again, without getting into the whys and wherefores of the royal family I'm made up for them. My mum is giddy with excitement and my Dad will get to see the flotilla on the Thames which for a retired marine surveyor will be pretty ace.

This is nothing to do with the perceived rise in nationalism.

And as for pomp, no fucker on the planet does it as well as we do so it'll be a decent spectacle.

I remember the one in 77. I was 5 years old and it felt magical. Lots of floats, a market, rides on the precinct in town.

If you've got young kids and can get them somewhere where something decent is happening you should as it will stick with them forever.

At the moment they probably don't know the Queen is a nice old biddy with a shit family.

I am hoping she or the Duke of Edinburgh dies just before the jubilee.

That will put the nation in a shitty mood just before we get humilated in the European Championship and in time for the inevitable terrorist explosions to fuck up the Olympics.

Merry christmas

I was 13 and remember getting some coin, fuck knows what happened to said coin. I remember during the street parties that quite a few houses were burgled including ours, had to go a whole week without TV because the cunts swiped it.

I was 9. We had a street party and I came second in the Fancy Dressed Bike competition. My Dad had turned my bike into a boat (the royal yacht, with red white & blue crepe paper and everything) with marine plywood, rendering it completely unrideable. If I could only have ridden it I'd have won. I'll never forgive my Dad for that. Good times.

Our street party had a cricket competition on the huge field next to our street, i remember the older blokes running a book on it. It got all serious and the men were flinging balls down the wicket at young kids who were shitting themselves.

How come nothing for the golden jubilee though? Presumably that should have beeb a big deal? I remember nothing happening at all - what's changed between then and now?

There was though wasn't there? I was living in Cleckheaton at the time and there were street parties and all kinds of shite going on.

Maybe nationalism isn't the right word but in the last 4 years I've seen more pride in England and all that entails for English people than ever before.

Perhaps that's something that goes hand in hand with economic problems. You only have to look at how hard up people were during and immediately after WWII but national pride was immense.

I may have misunderstood your use of "Nationalism", which is a word which, like the Union Jack and the George Cross, has unfortunately started to become associated with extreme right wing ideals.

I'm not particularly patriotic but I don't see any issues with those who are proud of their country and if it's something that gives people comfort in times of economic hardship then fair play to them.

Thats the fucking problem with this elitist bullshit. We work 40 hours, 5 days a week to have 2 days off (weekends, well the majority do). We pay our taxes and all that shit while she sits on her ass. Then when its a celebration for her, she is kind enough to give us all a day off and we are made up about it. Is it just me that thinks that is crazy!? It should be the other way around. She should be working for us and making enough cash to give us more breathing space within our lives.

This royality bullshit is way past its sell by date. These people are running a muck while we buzz around like drone bees. Its designed this way to make it look as though shes doing us a favour when in fact, we're being fucked over so much, that a day off looks like shes doing us a favour.

I wanna topple this fuckin monarch and system. Its not working for me. I want my life. I want to have days off when its other peoples celebration days. Like when its Section's birthday, or when Silverlining comes out of the closet, I want days off for that.

Whos with me!?
