Martinez did some fabulous work at Swansea in terms of football ethos, a style which would find favour here.

Can he take the step up? it looks like we shall find out.

On topic, if we van get LVG as well, and the two can work together, that would give us far greater hope, and security.

I wasnt comparing Guardiola directly to Martinez but more his pedigree.

@SiClancy: Louis Van Gaal met with Ian Ayre in Portugal on Thursday at his house in Albuferia.

@SiClancy: The Telegraph report that and also say that FSG were interested in appointing Roberto Martinez to replace Comolli as DoF when DC was sacked.

@SiClancy: Seems like Van Gaal will be hard to keep away from the dugout as he wants to appoint Frans Hoek, who was Reina's goalkeeping coach @ Barca

I'm assuming Martinez as DoF is some kind of typo. They can't be that stupid. Can they?

If there is any truth in this whatsoever, it confirms my belief that FSG are fucking clueless clowns when it comes to football. I absolutely despair.

Word on Twitter is that Van Gaal has agreed terms and Whelan will announce his appointment this evening.

Duely repped! made me laugh if only in a rather sardonic way!

That telegraph article is quite funny

Liverpool oweners Fenway Sports Group sounding out experienced Dutchman Louis van Gaal for senior role - Telegraph

There are, though, complications as to whether the Dutchman’s methods match the way the Fenway Sports Group are seeking to restructure the club.

Van Gaal has been spending the summer at his house near Albufeira in the Algarve and it is understood that Ian Ayre, Liverpool’s managing director, flew out to meet him last week.

There are very few available candidates that possess Van Gaal’s pedigree. He has been out of work since falling into dispute with Ajax and Johan Cruyff.

While Van Gaal wants to be a head coach or manager, and has had plenty of offers, he recognises that Liverpool is a unique opportunity for him, even if it means working in a different role.

He has won titles in the Netherlands, Spain and Germany with Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich respectively and wants to test himself in English football.

The difficulties lie in Van Gaal being able to adapt to how Liverpool want their new structure to work. The first issue will be how comfortable the new manager would be working with Van Gaal, especially if it is a young manager like Brendan Rodgers or Roberto Martínez.

Rodgers and Martinez are the leading contenders to succeed Kenny Dalglish. Martinez met John W Henry, the principal owner, in Miami last week while Rodgers is thought to be back in serious contention after intially declining a meeting with Liverpool.

Such is FSG’s admiration for Martínez that, after sacking Damien Comolli in April, they considered approaching him for the role of director of football. At Wigan he has had a lot of control about the way the club works and he will be reluctant to cede too much influence to a sporting director at Liverpool.

Van Gaal has a reputation for setting the highest standards and being forthright to the point of arrogance. When he was technical director of Ajax in 2004, his demands caused him to fall out with head coach Ronald Koeman. Van Gaal ended up resigning.

Another issue is that, in all his previous jobs, Van Gaal has taken a substantial staff with him, made up of coaches and analysts. It is understood that he would want to bring key people with him to help infuse his football philosophy.

Andries Jonker, his former assistant at Bayern, has announced that he will be leaving Munich this summer, giving rise to speculation that he will be joining up with Van Gaal again. Van Gaal would also want to bring Frans Hoek with him, the innovative goalkeeping coach who Pepe Reina credits with developing his distinctive style at Barcelona.

Liverpool, though, have apparently refused to accept Steve Clarke’s resignation as first team coach, and only appointed Kevin Keen as a coach last summer, so may seek some continuity in this area. Then, of course, any new manager is surely going to want to bring some trusted coaching staff along with him.

To add to this complicated picture, FSG are also contemplating appointing a technical director as well as a sporting director. They felt that Comolli was taking on too much as director of football and want to divide the responsibilities into two jobs. Pep Segura, the technical manager of the Liverpool academy, is the favourite for the technical director role.

The next step for the owners is to decide whether to meet Van Gaal personally and find a way to resolve the issues that his appointment would bring, or whether to look for a candidate who, while not having Van Gaal’s track record, would prove a more straightforward fit for the way they want to run the club.

The worrying aspect is the talk of our "oweners" admiration for Martinez, yet we still haven't heard a peep about who might be advising them. I hope i'm not being a blind optimist in thinking their admiration of Martinez might actually be based on some solid footballing advice they've been given rather than their own instinct.

Let me get this straight;

FSG want a Manager that doesn't want to work under a Sporting Director.

FSG want a Sporting Director that doesn't want that role and wants to be Manager.

FSG want a Technical Director that the Sporting Director they want (who actually wants to be Manager) wouldn't want to work with.

Van Gaal as DoF makes a lot of sense. Tremendous experience, and, that would actually make Martinez's appointment reasonable:- he'd be no more than a Coach, a Yes Man. On top of that, if it all turns shit after a few games, Van Gaal could easily step in and do both jobs in an emergency situation.

I find myself wondering if his appointment might mean Dirk would stay - there's no doubt that Henry and co will want to slash the wage bill, and Dirk only came here for 10 million, so his wage wouldn't be in the upper reaches of the stratosphere like say Suarez, or Carroll.

We could do worse than Dirk Kuyt as Centre Forward week in week out.

Fsg know they are not experts in football. If anyone actually thinks they are not being advised by someone in the know then you're an idiot. This is not some toy to play with they are here to be successful and make a decent return for their investment. The fact that the papers haven't a clue is refreshing. Let's just hope things are announced soon. I reckon we will be pleased with the outcome after reading some of the possible alternatives mentioned.

They are being advised by Rick Parry.

And we have been made to look like fucking amateurs. (Again)

Kuyt is one of the highest earners at the club, and earns more than Suarez or Carroll.

It has nothing to do with the fee paid for him, plus he's had several contract extensions since he signed, each probably increasing his wage.

He should go, and I think he will.

So we hate the idea of Martinez or whoever (fair enough), but the answer to our prayers is Dirk Kuyt as first-choice striker next season?

Keep up this genius and the Americans will be putting you on the list soon. Expect a phonecall.

I would be prepared to give it a go IF LVG was DOF or Sporting director or whatever title they dream up and RM was head coach.

But more important to me would be our new ethos, way of working our footballing philosophy and a structure that meant a a long term continuation of personnel. The recent John Barnes article sums it up very well. If we buy players to fit our system and educate our youngsters to play in this system then I will be reassured.

Hopefully in the future we can then promote from within instead setting up footballs version of the apprentice.

Thats the problem though mate for the last 5/6 years we've bought players baised on that assumption "we could do worse than....."We should be going out and buying players because he is the best player in that position/system,With cancer & aids we had to buy players that cost as litle as possible and shoe horn them into a position they we no good in this has to stop sometime it may aswell be now.
