In a letter to supporters, chief executive Peter Moore was repentant on behalf of the club.

“We believe we came to the wrong conclusion last week to announce that we intended to apply to the Coronavirus Retention Scheme and furlough staff due to the suspension of the Premier League football calendar, and are truly sorry for that,” he said in a statement.

“Our intentions were, and still are, to ensure the entire workforce is given as much protection as possible from redundancy and/or loss of earnings during this unprecedented period.

“We are therefore committed to finding alternative ways to operate while there are no football matches being played that ensures we are not applying for the government relief scheme.”

Liverpool have accepted they misjudged the strength of feeling within their fanbase when taking what they initially believed a pragmatic and necessary business decision in the face of mounting costs.

The club has been in talks about the economic impact of the health crisis with senior staff for weeks, including manager Jurgen Klopp and leading players. Many senior staff have already accepted pay cuts.

“In the spirit of transparency we must also be clear, despite the fact we were in a healthy position prior to this crisis, our revenues have been shut off yet our outgoings remain,” Moore added.

“And like almost every sector of society, there is great uncertainty and concern over our present and future.

“Like any responsible employer concerned for its workers in the current situation, the Club continues to prepare for a range of different scenarios, around when football can return to operating as it did before the pandemic.  These scenarios range from best case to worst and everything in between.

“It is an unavoidable truth that several of these scenarios involve a massive downturn in revenue, with correspondingly unprecedented operating losses.  Having these vital financial resources so profoundly impacted would obviously negatively affect our ability to operate as we previously have.

“We are engaged in the process of exploring all avenues within our scope to limit the inevitable damage.”

Still leaves a fucking bad taste in the mouth though, shows you all this 'this means more' and 'what would bill shankly do?',means nothing to the hierarchy of the club.I was truly embarrassed, angry and sad today, even more so when some of my colleagues (LFC Fans)think the club have done nothing wrong.

A PR disaster of massive proportion.

"Intended to."

So, did we or didn't we apply to the scheme? Looks like people might have got their knickers in a twist for very little.

They tried the same shit with the ticket prices and had to back track worse than a tory minority government.

They've shown their true colours with this and any more shit like "This means more" will be seen as nothing more than bullshit.

Hendo must have been fucking raging with this after the times hes, spend setting up the NHS fund.

It's like I heard a comment on radio today,Its like taking food from a food bank when you have a wallet full of money and could comfortably shop at a supermarket

yeah agreed but if club was entitled to apply as are the likes of British Airways and much bigger companies with a greater turnover. After the millions in tax the club pays you can't blame them looking at it from a business point of view. Its easy for us sitting at home to just jump on the band wagon and have a dig just remember its the government that opened the furlough rule for any company to apply

Code will all be on shortly calling the club thick cunts who don't know hot to run a business for reversing it.

He'll be devastated. Primarily because it makes him look like he was in the wrong. And that's a logical impossibility, as we all know...

This isn't the first, or even the second time, that FSG have made a stupid decision for minimal profit/saving that they've backtracked on. Any cunt with some common sense could've told then that the resulting shit PR would vastly outweigh any money saved from their decision to furlough. They really need someone on the board with their ear to the ground who they have to run these types of decisions past before announcing them.

Isn't that why tony barret was employed.
