Gig review thread

Recommended Posts

There are plenty of gig goers on here, thought it was about time we had a review thread. Let's keep it current, not some Kajagoogoo gig that you went to in 1985, Flying Pig, keep it to gigs that you go to from here on in. Let's not bore everyone to death either. 400 words or so should cover it. I look forward to reading some reviews and to adding to this thread myself.

I'll kick off by shamelessly copying & pasting my own review from The Damned thread:

Band: The Damned

Venue: Picturedrome, Holsfirth

Date: 03/05/2012

Well that was the best I've ever seen them play. That's what 35 years of practice will do for you I guess. Vanian and Sensible are the only surviving original members but with the possible exception of Rat Scabies, Vanian and Sensible are the Damned aren't they? Monty Oxymoron on keyboards is a very amusing (and highly talented) addition with his own unique brand of freaky dancing and Pinch on the drums chipped in with the occasional quip.

It's the first time I've ever been to this venue too - an old cinema converted into a blacked out dingey live venue which suits The Damned better than anywhere I've seen them play before.

Vanian ever the showman and Sensible played the red beret topped clown. I struggle to think of a band with so much charisma and fun who simultaneously deliver such a top class musical performance. The set was more eclectic than I've ever seen before too. They started with Wait For The Blackout and proceeded to bang out the first three tracks of The Black Album, plus Hit or Miss, which was a real treat. They launched into some old favourites like Love Song and New Rose and even ventured into some less well played pieces including Stretcher Case, Antipope, I Fall and Fan Club.

Plan 9 Channel 7 followed I Just Can't Be Happy Today and at one point we were even treated to Curtain Call which was unspeakably brilliant.

Two encores (the Yorkshire oaf behind me screaming "what's t' point gorinoff ifyer orrnleh gonna come back on agenn?") included a short punk version of Happy Talk which was hilarious, the entire audience singing Happy Birthday to Captain Sensible (having previously belted out the traditional "Sensible's a wanker"), a couple from Strawberries - Ignite and Disco Man, then Alone Again Or and Eloise and all topped off with the obligitary and utterly brilliant anthem Smash It Up.

Vanian and Sensible are well into their fifties now and they still perform with the energy they had in 1977. They're unique and an absolute class act and last night reaffirmed their place in my top two all time favourite bands. It felt special seeing them on this, their 35th anniversary world tour. I freely admit to "getting something in my eye" during both Plan 9 Channel 7 and Curtain Call which were two of the many highlights of a fantastic performance. I only hope that wasn't the last time I ever see them play. Long live The Damned.

Band: The Happy Mondays

Venue: 02, Leeds

Date: 17/05/2012

I fucking loved the Mondays in the early 90's and hearing they were reforming for a tour got me absolutely buzzing for those days once more. I found out it had sold out early doors but a colleague's boyfriend manages the venue and she managed to get us free tickets (and drinks all night), which was nice.

Following a belting dj set by Bez, the Mondays strolled on to the intro refrains of Loose Fit which was nothing short of fucking awesome, save Shaun fucking the words up in the first verse. Rowetta, I have to say, was absolute class throughout not only Loose Fit but the entire set. More than once it looked as if she was giving Shaun direction and her wobbly bits looked fantastic in her dominatrix leather dress. Fuck any TV karaoke competition she's been involved with, she is absolute class and always has been.

The set was predictable but obviously good. Shaun did lose his way once or twice but then it wouldn't be the Mondays without a fucked up front man. Speaking of front men, Bez came on and danced for two or three tracks which was a fucking right treat. It was truly brilliant to witness Bez and his crazy dancing to Step On once more. Took me back a few years did that, and I may have made a fool of myself copying him. I fucking hope I did anyway.

Step On was the finalé to the encore, preceded by Hallelujah (I think, I was bollocksed by that time). Several highlights included Holiday, Bob's Yer Uncle and Judge Fudge (a bit of a personal favourite).

They've not really aged, although that may just be my drunken perspective of the whole do. Whelan was boss on the drums as ever, Rowetta was gorgeous and utter class as I already said, and the rest were solid and tight. Shaun introduced the band four or five times during the set which makes me think he may have been a bit wankered. It's the Happy Mondays though so I'd be disappointed if he wasn't. Only downside was the constant chants of "yorkshire, yorkshire, yorkshire" by the mongs watching but that didn't spoil the overall enjoyment and probably actually added a bit of spice to the whole manc-ness of the evening.

Top night, bad hangover. Go and see them if you can.

You're twisting my melon man.

Went to see Anais Mitchell at the Ruby Lounge in Manchester last night, been a few times and they seem to be pulling a few decent 'underground' acts through their doors, difficult when every other dive is trying to do the same thing.

Absolutely fucking amazing, intimate and lovely. I fell in love with her a little bit if I'm being truthful. She's in Leeds tonight if any of the Yorkshire bumpkins fancy broadening their horizons.

If you go tell her Bruce said hello, she'll know what you mean.

My last gig was an all dayer at an awesome, grubby little place called Temple of Boom in Leeds.

no idea who were playing, apart from the Adolescents who were on last, and were good.

venue is brilliant, but most of the bands I saw were a bit hardcore for my tastes.

a good time was had though.

Temple of Boom is great; I went with Owen (the ex-forumite known as the Professor) to see Axes there. Tiny little math-rock show, nearly blew my eardrums.

Saw the Faux Fighters who I felt put a lot of effort and energy into their gig, unfortunately the crowd was too passive despite the efforts of the band to gee them up, kinda took something away from it.

Not a fan of big arena shows, massively overpriced tickets, drinks, food and merch with normally crap venue acoustics but as KISS were one of the bands I loved as a boy before I ever really understood what music was I didn't want to miss out seeing them at least once so we got tickets for their (20th odd) Final Farewell Tour.

Went to the show at the O2 Arena on Thursday night.

Even though a Paul Stanley's voice was comically breaking every few seconds (and us pissing ourselves laughing surrounded by hardcore fans who I don't think were impressed) even though the sound wasn't that clear/balanced, we loved every minute.

Was just a ridiculously over the top spectacle.

Lead singers flying over the head of the crowds, fireworks, flames, fake blood, Drum Solos segments, Guitar Solos segments, BASS SOLO segments, guitars that shot out fire, drum risers going 50 foot high, rottotoms, loads of cheesy clap along moments.

Should be everything I hate but for a bunch of guys performing in their late 60's/early 70's it was just brilliant. When they do yet another final farewell tour (garunteed) in a few years you know what? I'll probably get tickets again and go back with our faces painted.

It was that much fun. Never seen a crowd so animated at a gig too, thanks to their fans it was a proper 'event' before, during and after I've not really witnessed from a large group of people since going to Oasis gigs.

We loved it and can't wait to tell the kid that their first gig was KISS.

It was bloody ace.

Minus points for the group of berks in the row in front of us telling everyone to get out the way when walking past as they were filming the whole gig on their crappy little phones. Bless their little cotton socks.

Liam Gallagher last Friday at Knebworth. Paolo Nutini and Kasabian support. I’m not gonna lie and I know most on here hate Oasis etc but it was one of the best days of my life. Up there with the Stone Roses at Heaton Park. Better actually. I needed it, I listened to Knebworth in 96 on the radio in my bedroom.

Aberfan this afternoon, I take it Embery is speaking at the festival in Merthyr and has popped over to pay his respects. Good on him.

Fun and games at the Costello gig the other night according to a mate ( Prices getting too high for me after 40+ years of attending almost every local Elvis gig ).

Half an hour of awful sound, where you couldn't hear Costello singing. The audience getting more and more agitated trying to point this out to the performers. Costello thinks he is getting heckled and takes a diva strop shouting at the crowd. Eventually a stage hand gets the message through but a significant number of the audience walk out. A bit of a tin-eared 'apology / not apology' issued the next day ( Assumed the crowd were drunk !! ).  Interested in any other attendees thoughts.
