The shop where i work is bringing in new stricter security measures, one of which being searches on leaving the premises.

We already have checks on backpacks, bags pockets etc but now everytime we leave the shop we have to lift up our trouser legs and then lift up our tops to show we're not trying to nick stock.

I'm not that fussed but it does seem a bit extreme and my question is can they legally make us do this or can we tell them to piss off?

You can refuse. I assume the refusal will be met by a telephone call to the police to come and conduct the search. They can detain you if they reasonably suspect you've committed a crime. Refusal would probably be sufficient reasonable suspicion.

Kinell, that's a bit severe!

Not sure they can legally enforce this unless it is in a contract of employment. Think its an infringement of your personal liberty tbh. I've worked in banks, government departments and other places where there has been sensitive info about but, I've never been subject to body searches.

Have you a union you can complain to? You employer could potentially make things difficult for you if you do take a stand though.

Join the union. Chances are your employer won't recognise them, which means no collective bargaining or free association. However, if you're dismissed or publicly accused of theft for refusing an unreasonable request to expose yourself- the union will pay your legal fees and go after them like a jack russel on viagra.

Christ, I really wouldn't want to see Milo on Viagra.
