I don't think we should go around expecting CL qualification next season. The fact is that teams rarely make that sort of progress out of the blue, there have to be fundamental changes at the club. There's generally a hint of league progress the season before, and if not you're looking at massive investment or a change of manager to get something more from the team.

If the status quo is maintained, a top 7 place within 10 points of 4th would be a magnificent league campaign for 2012-13. It's a fairly big ask and possible rather than likely, but there's just nothing to suggest that we're ready to move on.

Newcastle went from 12th last season to being favourites for the champions league spot this season with 4 games to go.

They've gone a long way to disproving a lot of myths about how long it takes to build a reasonably succesful premier league side, and how much money it takes to break into the top 4, or at least challenge for the top 4.

They were showing progress last year - a new manager half way through the season and stood finish for a newly promoted club. A bit like Redknapp at Spurs, without the promotion.

Kenny took charge last season and in his first full year has overseen a humiliating league campaign. It's going to be hard to improve significantly from here without substantial changes (ripping up his ludicrous and dated 'buy British' policy for starters, or at least sending it back to 1995), and such improvement generally requires a change at the top, especially when you have a manager who seems a bit hapless and bereft of ideas or ability to change a season long problem.

Hope that is some lame joke , Suarez is one of the few positives we can muster up in our team , Skrtel and Agger are the other shining lights ....

Suarez

Skrtel

Agger

Pepe

Gerrard

Johnson

Lucas

Coates

Kelly

Enrique

Bellamy

Plenty of defenders there , need to add a lot of attacking quality to that , the rest of the they squad can fuck off , the sooner the better.

Add Shelvey to the keep list , i keep forgetting he exists.

They added 35 goals to the side in two players, not exactly rocket science.

I cant imagine the league being so rubbish next season. Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal will all improve over the summer.

We had a chance this season even with an average team to be up there.

Of course that is what was said last year, and that was the reason we gave it a go in 09 with an average squad. The 6th place team in the league is in the semis of the CL. Parity is different from rubbish - the league top to bottom is quite strong.

That's my big fear. The top clubs are going to strenghthen, if we don't get the summer right we'll need space hubble to see them.

Just back from the game, and deeply depressed about our league form.

The world is upside down. We are now retrospectively on a worse run than under Hodgson, who has managed to beat an already decent team bolstered by £110m worth of talent.

Kenny was supposed to reintroduce professionalism, The Liverpool Way ,of taking each game as it comes, and playing each game as though it might be the last. Instead we have a team that play the occasion ( a cup run, games against Man City/Chelsea) and are not playing for the manager.

Being beaten by Roy is a humiliation.

Our season continues to teeter. A double win will put LFC and Kenny in the history books. A defeat puts Kenny back with Alex McLeish as a League Cup winner.

If we are dominating games and not scoring then the tactics are wrong. You don't only win five home league games all season by bad luck- it's bad management.

As our league campaign continues to splutter, as it did last season, so the prospects of an abject league finish increases, and the chances of securing quality summer transfer targets diminishes. We may look on the Downing and Adam signings as the salad days.

Kuyt did not deserve to be subbed, Pepe kept a few out but might have done better with the goal. Johnson is a fantastic footballer, but not a specialist full back which is why Chelsea sold him. He has a place in wide midfield, but not as the last man playing at the highest level. Kenny needs to take responsibility for failing to play a formation which gets the best out of the players.

I have just caught Kenny’s post match interview which appears to be a pre-recorded speech now in which he has forgotten that he is supposed to influence results, if he cannot, there is no point in him being there.

just back from the game

Hahahahaha!

I'm extremely worried about this summer's transfer business. Suarez and Reina not long for this club I reckon, Gerrard and Carra virtually checked out physically - we're Aston Villa unless we spend big and spend well.

The summer could make or break our club. It's that desperate; we either have an amazing summer and start knocking about the top 4 again. Or we have a summer like last and fail further into obscurity.

Regardless of the possible double we could have, whichever way you look at it. Kenny signings have sent the club back years. I don't think he should be allowed to "choose" anymore players.

What conclusions are you drawing?

Ashley and Llambias are life long friends. They are not Geordies, but they are football fans as well as business men. They hired, then fired, local legend Shearer. They hired then fired DOF Wise. They sacked a popular manager who was doing well, and took a big risk with Pardew that has paid off. They have sold well, and bought well and paid down their debt. They also attend almost all games.

FSG are also mainly a collective of friends, but they are an investment club. What Ashley says goes – Henry needs a numeric or financial majority to back him. I have been told by people who work at the club that FSG have attended fewer LFC games than G&H did in their time here. H&W’s decision to watch the Red Sox last weekend instead of us showed where their priorities lie.

Now that would not matter much if the management team was strong – but it isn’t. With Comolli gone who is going to sign the players? Kenny has never been responsible for that, Robinson, Walker , Hall/Shepherd did that before. Ayre can sign shirt deals but has no experience of anything else.

I agree that it is possible. But are FSG close enough, and knowledgeable enough, about this, and are the existing management team strong enough to “do a Newcastle?”. I hope so. But I doubt it.

Yet another bad result but some of the posters on here should only ever be allowed plastic cutlery! Same problems we have had all season but, apart from the huge problem we have scoring goals, we aren't far away from having a very good team. We have played well for most of the season although confidence has become increasingly fragile, as the season has gone on, due to our inability to score enough goals and get enough good results. I think confidence will still be fragile despite the Everton and Blackburn results so hopefully we can get a couple of good results before the cup final so we aren't as lacking in confidence, as we were post QPR and pre-Blackburn. 2 or 3 good signings in the summer and we will have every chance of getting back in the top four and winning another trophy or 2. We bought poorly last summer, whether that was Dalglish or Commoli's fault who knows for certain? For the record I think Henderson will prove to be a good signing but I'm not too fussed on Carroll, Downing or Adam. Could all be decent squad players but none of them are good enough to be regular starters. I think Kenny deserves another season to get it right but, if its not much better next season, then clearly he won't be the right man for the job. What we have to avoid though, is becoming one of those clubs that changes their manager every two minutes, because that kind of instability usually leads nowhere.

I agree that Kenny should stay, I think that there is a strong case that he should see out the remainder of his contract.

But he does need to do his job- and it is not being done to a sufficiencly high standard.

If you want to manage LFC ,and take a world top ten managers salary -you have to perform.

Guest San Don

Too many billy big bollox's in our team today. That was a poor performance especially by glen johnson. Call yourself a fullback? You should be fucking ashamed after today's performance.

The game just about summed up our season, unlucky hitting the post twice with the (timewaster) keeper nowhere, shit finishing, lethargy and a couple of good moves.

Tell you what, Carroll may get slagged off for his finishing ability but that lad showed more heart than anyone else on the pitch today.

Suarez needs to have a word with himself too. Some of his decision's today where very questionable although he also had some sublime moves.

Jay Spearing tried hard but fuck me Jay, how hard is it for you to actually get over the ball when shooting instead of ballooning it over the bar?

And I hate this shit that if Gerrard isnt on the pitch, Carragher is captain. And if Carragher isnt on the pitch, Reina is captain. This isnt a rant at Reina. I know he is one of our senior players. But in games like this, you need an out field captain to be amongst the players and gee them up.

Cant understand the attitude today, it was played at the pace of a training game. Simply not good enough.

Oh well, we'll get some money to spend when we sell johnson, downing, maxi and a few others.

Wot, no man of the match thread!

I think we should sell Suarez and buy someone who can score goals.

First off i agree Suarez aint the best finisher at the club ,but he's definitely

the most creative bar Gerrard, would love to see him in a front three on the right where he seems to beat his man for fun,and have a neg for sugesting we sell our best player and being a tight cunt seen as you been here from 2005.
