John Barnes Article in Times

Lawrenson was crucified for his holding up that rag, while I really want to be a hypocrite and point to all the great things John Barnes has done for the club. I can't get past he's obviously an intelligent man and he is well aware of the damage that rag has caused the club and the city for many years. So to be having any association with it especially on TV like that is very disappointing.

I understand that newspapers are looking for anything to write these days and that we can be caught out quoting that rag sometimes without knowing. That aside, there's no doubt he knew it was that rag.

He has already said he will ask the researchers to keep that rag away from him for any future newspaper reviews, lesson learnt and we move on.

Hard to understand how he managed to do it unless he was on "autopilot" and just did it automatically without thinking about his actions, thinking of it as just a piece of paper. I'm sure if he had the chance to do it all over again he wouldn't make the mistake. And those on the show putting the rag in front of a Liverpool player are 100% aware what they are doing, so maybe a bit of entrapment?

The good he's done previously far outweighs this incident in my opinion - he's no Lawro that's for sure. Either way he shouldn't have done it.

Just spotted this, didn't even know TB had quit, well done to the lad and best of luck with his new job.

A former Liverpool ECHO journalist who left his job at The Times weeks after criticising the paper’s Hillsborough coverage has found a new job.

Tony Barrett - a news and features writer at the ECHO before becoming the paper’sLiverpool FC reporter in 2007 - resigned his position as Merseyside football correspondent last month.
