Zenit have apparently signed Hulk from Porto and Witsel from Benfica for something like €90m for the pair!

Oh, and Chelsea have flogged Meireles off to Fenerbahce for around £8m.

Christ, no-one tell FSG they could still sell players. They'll have half the squad off to Turkey and replace them with urchins off the street.

People using Man Utd as a benchmark really don't know what they are talking about. Man Utd is being run in appalling fashion, and this will soon enough become evident on the pitch. If Ferguson had any integrity at all he would be calling out the owners (much in the same way Rafa did), but he's not arsed about Man Utd, he's not arsed about leaving a legacy, he only wants to leave with a great record, then fuck what happens after that!

Totally agree, but I reckon United are such a huge club that they will be massively appealing to some Russian or Middle Eastern investor that will just pay off all their debt.

God help us if that happens.

Logic.

We refuse to follow them, on principle, and look how successful that has been...

You spend your money on quality forwards and quality defenders, because that's what the game's about, keeping the ball out of your net and putting it in the other net.

As good as Allen is, as good as Sahin is, as good as Adam or Henderson were, it counts for very fucking little really. When that chubby cunt Anderson still gets a game for United from time to time, that's when you really realise how fucking low the midfield is on Ferguson's list of things to sort.

180 pages Brendan? I've just condensed the truth into a paragraph.

Can't agree. Ultimately all the great teams have a great midfield. For United see Keane and Scholes, for us a few years ago see Mascher, Xabi and Stevie, for Arsenal see Petit and Viera. Look at Barca now. United can have their Van Persies and Rooneys all they want, but Barca would comfortably beat them imo due to their majestic midfield as much as Messi. United won't win a Champions League until they sort out their midfield.

I can see some value in what you say though, as I truly believe that the general standard of teams in the league means that a half decent striker nowadays will bag you 10-12 goals and a player like RVP can get you 30+ no bother.

Just a little quiz question (I don’t know the answer by the way) has any team ever won the Premier League without having a player scoring 20 or more league goals that season?

1992/93 - Cantona scored 15 (top scorer was Sheringham with 22)

1993/94 - Cantona scored 18 (top scorer was Cole with 34)

1995/96 - Cantona scored 14 9top scorer was Shearer with 31)

1996/97 - Solskjaer scored 18 (top scorer was Shearer with 25)

1997/98 - Bergkamp scored 16 (top scorers were Owen, Sutton and Dublin with 18

1998/99 - Yorke scored 18 (top scorers were Owen, Hasselbaink and Yorke with 18

2000/01 - Sheringham scored 15 (top scorer was Hasselbaink with 23)

2004/05 - Lampard scored 13 (top scorer was Henry with 25)

2005/06 - Lampard scored 16 (top scorer was Henry with 27)

2006/07 - Ronaldo scored 17 (top scorer was Drogba with 20)

2008/09 - Ronaldo scored 18 (top scorer was Anelka with 19)

Thanks for that mate.

So this 20 goal a season striker necessity myth is bulshit then? Before a team needs a striker who can “put the ball in the back of the net” they should try and get midfielders who chip in.
