There should be a good chance to see some in the northern parts of GB tonight when it's dark if you have clear skies, KP index is at its maximum in the next hour. You may easily see the aurora forecast on your pc here:

I think it's more serious than just looking at fancy lights in the night sky. The sun has given the earths magnetosphere an absolute battering in the last few days. Although its a natural occurrence, strong coronal mass ejections have wiped out power grids in recent times.

 

NASA scientists have also said in the past that an X class solar flare directed at the Earth, could knock us back into the stone ages, by rendering all electronics useless. It's also thought that a solar flare was the cause of Mars losing its earth like atmosphere.
