Digital SLR Advice

Looking to get a digital SLR camera for around $700aus which is (let me google here) 450 Pound. Give or take $100 or so.

It's just for personal use but I want good pics not the usual shitty ones that you never want to look again, I really don't know a lot about camera or lenses so something easy to use would be useful.

Any suggestions?

I love it when someone starts a thread about something you were thinking of starting a thread on. Well done Rex Banner. I havent got a clue about cameras but was wondering the same thing. I have been told that shutter speed and white balance are a major factor in deciding on what camera to get.

Any luck finding the beer barron?

I was thinking of getting an SLR or a compact system camera like the G3 but the size of them put me off. Although they are getting smaller, they are still quite bulky and you'd need to carry them everywhere round your neck like a stereotypical US tourist. I'd be tempted to go for a decent high end compact if it's for holiday snaps and the like unless you're really into your photography.

Agreed that this thread should be on the TNF.

With regard to the advice, as a photographer, I've actually gone the other way and got a decent middle to high end pocketable compact and have been delighted with the results. Part of that is working on manual to get the results I want to get, and can do with the knowledge and experience I have. But still, the camera is capable of doing most of what I want it to do.

I'm currently going through a few hundred images editing what I want to work on so I can upload them and show them here. They'll have to be reduced to about a quarter of their size, and still they will have to be downsized further for display on these pages. That, to be realistic and honest, is how most people are showing images now - on forum threads, facebook and sites like Flickr. But even if prints are needed, I'd be more than happy with the quality produced for printing.
