When the most powerful leader in the world speaks about Mexicans,Muslims,Women and basically anybody but himself as no more important than cockroaches and a group of UK Government MPs,ministers and backbenchers use racism/xenophobia as a way to encourage its citizens to break away from its closest allies then its not much of a surprise to see this being reflected in society as a whole, including sport and popular culture.

Little Liverpool fan's first Anfield game ruined when racist launched rant at family

A little boy had his first ever Liverpool football match ruined by a drunken lout hurling foul racist abuse at his dad.

Steven Gallagher, 37, had been muttering racial slurs towards Amir Malik but exploded into a rage when the victim's five-year-old son accidentally knocked his seat with his foot.

Mr Malik said his son and four-year-old daughter were left in "floods of tears" and wanted to go home after the incident at the Liverpool Legends vs Milan Glorie charity match at Anfield on Saturday.

Factory worker Gallagher wound up spending two nights in the cells and appeared at Sefton Magistrates' Court , Bootle, this morning where he admitted a charge of racially aggravated threatening or abusive behaviour with intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Gallagher had travelled to watch the game from his home in Port Glenone in County Derry, Ireland, and had sunk around seven or eight pints according to his own estimates.

Angela Conlon, prosecuting, told the court: "The complainant, Amir Malik, was (in the stadium) with his wife and two children; his daughter is aged four and his son is five.

"Throughout the game the defendant had kept turning around and staring at them, shouting comments about p****.

"The people who had attended with him apologised to Mr Malik and said 'sorry about that, he's a bit p****d.' However Gallagher turned around and said 'these f****** p*** b*******.'

"Mr Malik said by now he was feeling angry and horrible but didn't want to make a scene because he was with his wife and children."

Ms Conlon told the court that as half-time approached Mr Malik's little boy began to realise "something was wrong."

She said: "At half-time the young child knocked into one of the seats with his foot. The defendant started to shout and swear. Mr Malik said he threatened to assault me, and my son and daughter were in floods of tears.

"My son started to tell me he wanted to leave at this point and go home."

Mr Malik's wife moved their children away and stewards were alerted, who came to escort the still ranting Gallagher out of the stands before handing him over to Merseyside Police.

A statement from Mr Malik said: "This was my son's first Liverpool game. I have been subject to racist abuse in the past but my children have not.

"I felt it is disgusting that a grown man would act in such a way in complete disregard as to the presence of children and their young age."

The court heard Gallagher, who has one previous conviction for burglary, was not fit to be interviewed after his arrest due to his drunken state and later told officers he could not remember the incident.

Helen Dugdale, defending, said her client "could not believe" he had used the vile racist language described.

She said: "The language is not something that is normally in his mind and is not something he uses.

"He has no explanation to offer to the court today...

"It is an offence that is totally out of character, one he bitterly regrets and one he has shown remorse for."

Ms Dugdale said Liverpool FC will very likely ban Gallagher from attending any matches.

District Judge Richard Clancy said he was not legally able to impose a football banning order because the game was a charity match - but he hit Gallagher with a 12 month exclusion order banning him from coming within a mile of Anfield Football Stadium.

Judge Clancy said: "Mr Gallagher this was a disgraceful incident and one for which you are very lucky not to be going to prison today.

"I have taken into account the fact you are working and everything that has been said on your behalf."

He sentenced Gallagher to six weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and fined him £250.

1x1.pngGallagher was also ordered to pay a £150 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs.

The Reds won the match, which raised £1million for the Liverpool FC Foundation, 3-2 thanks to some late heroics from Steven Gerrard.

Like in a lot of similar cases, the defendants always claim that they don't normally act like that or use such language but such views are clearly something they genuinely think. It only took '7 or 8 pints' to bring it to the surface.

Obviously don’t know the exact ins and outs - he could have been sitting with 7/8 other fellas which put people off intervening - but you’d think someone would have sorted him out as soon as he started.

These days you'd be the one in bother for sparking the piece of shit out.

Liverpool's supporters union says there have been multiple reports of racist incidents amongst the club's fans at matches.

The Spirit of Shankly today released a statement after drunken lout Steven Gallagher was convicted of racially abusing fellow fan Amir Malik and his young family during this weekend's legends charity match at Anfield.

The club's union have today condemned the actions of Gallagher - but said his is not the only reported racist incident they have been made aware of in recent weeks.

In a statement made on social media, Spirit of Shankly said: "It should go without saying but we have been shocked by recent incidents of racism at Liverpool matches.

"As a union we stand firm against racism and discrimination in all its forms.

"It has no place at Anfield, in football, or wider society."

When asked to expand on those words, current chair Jay McKenna said that on the back of the union's AGM last week, they had been made aware of more reports of racist abuse.

He said: "Some people reported incidents of racism at the away game at Bayern Munich - from Liverpool fans towards Asian Liverpool fans in the stadium.

"We have reached out to them and offered them support.

"We are not aware of a wider problem but this still needs to be stamped out and dealt with now."

The union brought an anti-racism motion to last week's meeting which looks set to be overwhelmingly backed by members.

Jay explained: "The motion states very strongly that racism in all its forms should never be tolerated and that those who use football as a platform to divide should not be given a platform.

"These incidents we now know about show just why this stance is needed.

"We don't think this is just a football problem and certainly not a Liverpool problem - it is a societal problem that we are seeing in the news every day. But we must not be complacent.

Klopp reacts to Liverpool's 3-1 win over Bayern Munich

"What we heard about yesterday, with a young family being abused when watching the team they love is heartbreaking and unacceptable.

"Imagining how excited that child must have been before the match and how they would have felt afterwards, this should not be happening at a football match.

"We welcome the actions of the courts and the swift and strong actions of Liverpool FC, who have been very clear that this won't be tolerated."

The reported Munich incidents were raised with Spirit of Shankly by the LFC Red Indians group, who said: "Is anything being done about our own supporters using racist language against OUR own fans in Munich?"

The ECHO understands that after the union reached out to those affected and that LFC supporter liaison Tony Barrett was already in touch with the victims of the abuse and looking into the reports.

Speaking after the conviction of Gallagher yesterday, a Liverpool club spokesman said the Reds will take action against anyone found to have engaged in racist abuse.

He said: “The individual responsible has received a criminal conviction and will also be subject to the Club’s sanctions process. Anyone found guilty of such an offence will be subject to a lifetime stadium ban, regardless of the classification of fixture."

Interesting (small thread) surrounding the casual racism aimed at Salah by opposition fans that goes relatively unnoticed, except by Liverpool fans.

This little gem from a student at University Campus of Football Business, which they appear reluctant to do anything but distance themselves from. They have a campus at the Etihad.

That's just plain good old fashioned bigotry. Not important!
