recently started buying asda's own brand stuff to save a few quid. This week i thought i would give their own brand special k a go.

so there i was , happily munching away on my cereal at 6.30 this morning when all of a sudden there was a huge CRACK ! and a searing pain in my gob.

i spit out the contents of me mush, to find a fucking whole cherry stone and half of my left upper molar !

It cost me £250 today to have a cap put on my tooth !!

Injured by Asda and robbed blind by a fucking dentist :telloff:

moral of the story, dont try to save money on cheap grub.

What's this urban myth about own brand stuff being the same as the top brands just in different packaging? They're pretty much all shite. Morrisons smatrpirce (or whatever) peanuts are the shittest food product I've ever encountered, they're like chippings of peanuts which have been scooped up off the floor.

I think some stuff is of comparable quality. But like you I doubt much smartprice shit is.

Supermarkets own crisps are shit, unless they're the kettle chip type big bags. I can't stand cheap crisps, really twists my melon.

Sandwich pickles, beans and soups are the fucking worst though. But equally tinned tomatoes, peaches et al are all good.

Jaffa cakes and the like passable.

Never the cheapest shit though. It's well... Er.... Shit

Smart price stuff is shit. My bird went to asda the other day to get some naan bread and bought the smart price ones because they are ' the same as the dearer ones. ' The picture doesn't do it justice, they are about the same size as my hand and went brittle after about 2 minutes in the oven.

It was mentioned that own brand tinned tomatoes are the same.

They are not. Had some tonight in my ratatouille, and while it was still decent, it was nowhere near the same as usual. Really watery, no flavour. Unimpressed. Mind you - it was clearly my fault as i was equally unimpressed by the price of the tinned tomatoes i normally buy.

Supermarket brand chocolate is also shite. Really shite. Embarrassingly shite.

Half the own brand stuff is dearer than the leading brand. They just hope you don't notice because you assume it'll be cheaper. Buyer beware!

Shit, just realised I'm get old.

I went to Sainos earlier, walking round saw Twinings every day tea was £1.50 for 80 bags.

After making an excited noise, turned round without a hint of Partridge or irony and said to the missus... " that's a fantastic price shall we stock up?"

To which she replied... "We did that with Yorkshire tea two weeks ago".

Now I'm online doing it. What happened to using the Internets for porn and making weapons and illegal shit?

I can only speak for Asda's stuff but some of their smart price stuff is poor, some of it's good. Most of it - well you get what you pay for. As for their "chosen by you" stuff, it's very good and they've won awards and plaudits with it. They've spent many millions on customer feedback and making their own label midrange items exactly how customers want it. The idea was that "Asda tinned peas" for example, were perceived by the customer as the same quality as smart price. And that wasn't far off the truth. They realised there was a market for smart price but that people would pay more for better quality but unbranded items so they upped the quality of the mid range own label stuff and "Chosen By You" was born.

I rarely buy any of their smart price stuff unless it's cheap chocolate powder or something but their Chosen By You is very fucking good.

As for own brand being more expensive than branded - piffle. Unless the own label is "Extra Special" range or the branded item is on a price offer.

Noone has ever chipped a tooth on a cherry stone in a fry up, have they?

Moral of the story: Eat proper food.

Special K? I have absolutely no sympathy at all for you.
