Might buy a Samsung Galaxy S2 on a 12 month contract and flog it to pay for it once I've got an unlocked iPhone 5 order.

I like Dave still have a 32GB 3GS that still marvelous. Never tempted to get an iPhone4.

Apple are playing catch up I fear as it's competitors have seriously upped the game and have a massive advantage with being able to release as many phones per year as they want.

Just switched from HTC Desire to Galaxy S2. I loved my desire, I had it rooted, and a custom rom loaded, and it was my favourite phone I have ever owned. The S2 blows it away though. An absoulute beast of a machine, and sooooo thin! The screen is unbelievable too!

the world is coming to be dominated by three tech companies - Apple, Google and Facebook - and that there's no sign of a slow down in their ubiquity.

There's one more name to add to that list: Amazon.

Half the Internet services now appear to be hosted on their servers (DropBox, 4sq to name two), their digital music offering cut through the red tape and came to market quicker than any other, and they appear to offer anything and everything via their site.

Like others have said it's looking more and more likely that the new iphone will be a 4s. Same design as the 4 which is a disappointment for me. True it might have a faster processor, improved memory and possibly be available with 64gb and an 8gb camera. But I really wanted a new design too.

I suppose we will have to wait a couple of hours to find out. Seemingly one case designer has already manufactured a case for the phone which suggests the screen is larger. I could accept a similar design with a larger screen. I also hope they change the back cover and make sure this one can actually pick up a signal.

My contract ran out 8 months ago thought I'd wait for the new phone be a bit pissed off if it's just the iPhone 4 which is a heap of shit.

But, but it has an 's' after the 4. In all honesty apple could just put an s after the 4 and sell the same phone, slavering mongs would rush out and buy it.

Very true. Especially if this Kindle Fire thing takes off.

Paul, were you basing your original world tech domination statement on what is actually visible to you only?

The success of the kindle in IT is pretty insignificant with regard to the bigger picture. Oracle's big push beyond their usual dominance in the database field and onto the IT stack is of far more significance.

The resurgence of Microsoft (Apple host their cloud services on MS Azure as well as on Amazon EC2) with Windows 7 being a success, 8 looking even better and their excellent mobile reviews as well as other things might not make the headlines but will be far more important.

Cisco, Verizon, Baidu and any number of other companies also have positions of dominance that are also unthreatened in their field and in the case of far east tech companies, far more scope for growth.

No doubt 2 of the 3 you mentioned will continue to be a success (I reserve judgement on Facebook), but they will not be dominating too much beyond their own field.

The reason I think they'll dominate is because the world is becoming ever-more obsessed with mobile internet, social networking and the devices that provide access to these. As for not dominating, how much more dominant can you get than Apple being the biggest company in the world by market capitalisation? The companies mentioned transcend mere tech, in my opinion; they're lifestyle companies now and as such have massively more potential than any specialist tech brand.

Apple are third biggest as of July. A minor quibble.

The fact that they are lifestyle companies is their weakness rather than a strength as far as long term viability goes. There is always something cooler around the corner. Apple are and will continue to come under increased pressure in the consumer market. Their share in the mobile phone market has decreased recently with the iPad keeping their mobile traffic share from dropping more sharply. I'm not saying Apple will be going anywhere soon, it is just inevitable that their share is going to drop. Take a look at tablets. From 93% to 73% market share, and that is without the Kindle Fire on the market.

Companies like Oracle are all but immune from trends at the moment. They've become so entrenched in what they do, that it would take some monumental seachange in business practices to unseat them.

Google are pretty much insurmountable though I'd agree.

And finally about Apple's market value. It is a bit of the emperor's new clothes unless you actually do see massive growth. If you compare them with MS, they have slightly less revenue and would need an 80% growth in profit to match them. I would bet my house that is not going to happen.

Apple. The masters at recycling old ideas and making them sound like the best thing ever.

Diversity antennas. Woo.

I refuse to get excited about all this until I hear Stephen Fry go into a plummy voiced ejaculatory congratulatory wankfest about it all.

It's a good job that their UI is so good, if the other phones catch up they are fucked.

They'd done a good enough job creating a massive base of hard core followers that it won't matter.

If I had a 3GS I'd be more excited, by my 4 is working just fine. Will upgrade next year for sure though

I wonder how Siri will cope with strong regional accents? I've not met a voice recognition system yet that can cope with my own, rather strong scouse accent. Well, not without slowing everything down and sounding like a mong, that is.

All in all, a bit underwhelming really. Nothing that makes me want to chuck money at them for the latest and greatest new thing.

This is the bit that has always confused me. People used to nail their mast to a cause or a football team. Now they nail them to a corporation. And pay them as well.

Why upgrade next year for sure? Do you know the iPhone 5 will be that good and equally sure nothing else will come on the market that is just better (if this hasn't already happened)?

This is from someone who owns an iMac and iPod (has never been bettered) and has in the past also had an iPhone and 2 Macbooks. Fact is they have just been superceded by better products. If the iPhone is better than anything else I might buy it. No other consideration matters.

It'll be one of those things that people say "cool voice recognition I want that" use it for a week and then rarely touch it.

Voice recognition is available on Android, Windows (PC's dunno about Mobile) and iphones at the moment but I bet it's barely used.

Personally I don't think there's enough in the new 4s to persuade me to drop my 3gs. In fact it's more likely to make me start looking for another phone.

I can always keep my 3gs (which is an excellent phone that is in no way slow or showing it's age) to use my apps on.

If I'm honest this update is shit, I can't see me barking out orders in a public place to a phone, not unless I want to look like a complete prick. If I want good pictures I use a camera, for anything else my 3gs takes decent pics.

Shame really as it could have been so much better, it's ended up being a slight update which after 16 months is as I said, shit.

Same with me.

As I said before the announcement a 4GS wouldn't be enough to make me upgrade and the voice activation will go the same way as all the other gadgets I've had on voice recognition on i'll use it for a bit and then never use it again.

Samsung (either there own Galaxy S II or Note, or the Samsung made Nexus Prime for google) are looking the leaders for my money at the moment which will see me through the next 12-18 months (and depending on the choice I might double up with the 3gs)
