The Walking Dead Thread (spoilers and zombies inside)

Nothing to stop walkers walking along the seabed to get to your island! (Thanks to World War Z for pointing that out to me! )

They'd need diving boots if there's any kind of tidal current.

I've already selected my island but there's no way I'm going to reveal it on a public forum.

Considering how deliberate the pace was, and how little regard I have for the actors and think the writers get badly shown up when they slow things down, I thought that was a pretty good episode. Nice to see Michonne fleshed out and there was a well crafted chilling atmosphere to the whole thing.

The boy is still very annoying, though.

You're watching a cable show about zombies based on a comic book, it's not meant to be fucking Shoah.

Good post.

Three, sort of little, things quickly:

1) The post you quoted was praising the episode.

2) I have argued, on this exact thread, that people shouldn't take the show too seriously.

3) A ludicrous premise doesn't necessitate poor storytelling. A show widely regarded as one of the best of all time was about man made robots, which looked like humans. A show that's widely regarded as one of the best on TV features dragons, walkers and a litany of other creatures. That's on cable, too, by the way.

But, eh, yeah, aside from that...

The ending of episode 12 was as good as anything they've done so far for me. It encapsulated the whole tone of them being the walking dead and how their humanity, and the rules, have shifted so dramatically.

I'm talking in particular about the guy with the ruck-sack. How they ignore him, then drive past his remains, then reverse back to pick up his belongings. Along with that haunting Mississippi blues number I thought it was as strong as the show hs been.

This was wonderful:

I thought that was brilliant also. A small 10 second scene, but it said a thousand words as to what humanity had now become.

Little moments like that can be so important in TV/Movies. I remember the opening scene of Homeland where you have the very pretty Claire Danes in the main role. She could have very easily been seen as just a stereotypical pretty blond which would have taken the writers quite a few episodes to convince viewers that she was in fact a somewhat warped, far too lost in her job, on the ragged edge odd-ball. Instead there was that opening moment where she had a “whores bath” and wiped her fanny with a cloth when getting dressed to rush out the door and you just immediately knew this woman was very very different to how she looked. Such a small moment, yet it the set the tone and the idea of the character brilliantly. I love moments like that in good TV.

This is something I've never understood either. I'm not asking for actual science or whatever to back up what is going on but a little bit of depth or anything across the board that makes any of the characters remotely likeable would be a good change of pace.

Nice that the Governor has taken on Shane's place as the completely unhinged one week and calculated antagonist the next with seemingly the sole purpose of providing someone to play off of Rick.

Tell you what really annoys me about this program... and I'll put this in tags as I'm going to mention something from tonight's episode...

When Andrea was running away from Newbury and the Governor came down the road after her in his truck, she hides behind a tree and gets grabbed from behind by a walker. Three more appear right in front of her as soon as she's pinned. Where do they come from, and why doesn't she see/hear them until they magically appear within a few inches of her? These things groan and moan whenever they see food and shuffle around mindlessly making all sorts of noise, but suddenly become super-silent stealth ninjas whenever the writers want them to grab somebody? Same thing happened when Dale died, as fucking if he wouldn't have heard that walker coming. Hell, the same thing happens at least once an episode.

It's lazy writing and/or direction. Just a little bit of effort at internal consistency isn't that much to ask, is it?

Hahahahahaha. Yep.

And don't be silly asking for consistency. This show don't know the meaning of it. Remember at the start of two when Dale was a look out on the motorway? Suddenly, outta no where, millions of the bastards appear. I creased over at that as much as the scene you've just described. Comedy gold.

Also that bit when Andrea hides behind the door. Opens it, sees these dead fuckers, closes it and stands next a broken window leading into it. Not one motions towards her. Random as.

You know that sometimes in a horror inflected show that classic horror staples are used? That's a classic horror staple.

Doesn't make it any less valid a criticism though. One of the reasons I watch very little horror is that the lack of realism in the decisions being made, and the things happening, takes me right out of the story and the experience. I can't invest in it.

You can have an extreme premise and still have the characters within that premise behaving with authenticity.

As Andrea was leaving that busted up building I'm saying to myself "Right, you're going to fuck the van up aren't you? If he's not left the keys, you are at least going to slash the tyres or pull something useful out of the bonnet, right?"

Nope. I mean, that's a realistic mistake someone could make but she does kind of deserve to be tortured for being that stupid.

So, Andrea decided to talk to someone who was dying and ultimately about to turn instead of trying to free herself then decided that with one free hand and some pliers couldn't fit off one walker yet defeated three whilst slightly worse off in a previous epside?

Riiiight.
