Unbelieveable that it's been that long. I was in Forbidden Planet in Bold Street after uni when I first heard Bush on the radio.

When I went home and watched the towers fall I just couldn't take it in.

We've all seen grim shit in our time what with 24 hour news being the way it is, but I've still never seen anything that sickens and shocks me as much as the sight of people jumping out of the world trade centre, as far as psychologically disturbing shit goes, it was on a whole different scale to what I'd seen before.

Was reading the other day though that Steve Buscemi went to volunteer with his old firefighter colleagues in the aftermath, I thought that was ace, and no doubt one of many stories like that dotted around.

Steve was a New York City fire fighter from 1980 to 1984, with Engine Company #55 in the Little Italy section of New York. He showed up at his old firehouse the day after the World Trade Center tragedy in New York to volunteer, working twelve-hour shifts for a week after the terrorist act, and digging through rubble with his old comrades looking for missing firefighters

The sight of the priest Mychal Judge being carried out of the rubble too, never fails to put a lump in my throat.

Upon hearing the news that the World Trade Center had been hit, Father Judge rushed to the site. He was met by the Mayor of New York, Rudolph Giuliani, who asked him to pray for the city and its victims. Judge administered the Last Rites to some lying on the streets, then entered the lobby of the World Trade Center North Tower, where an emergency command post was organized. There he continued offering aid and prayers for the rescuers, the injured and dead.

When the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 AM, debris went flying through the North Tower lobby, killing many inside, including Judge. At the moment he was struck in the head and killed, Judge was repeatedly praying aloud, "Jesus, please end this right now! God, please end this!", according to Judge's biographer and New York Daily News columnist Michael Daly.[10][11]

Shortly after his death, a NYPD lieutenant, who had also been buried in the collapse, found Judge's body and assisted by two firemen and two civilian bystanders carried it out of the North Tower lobby to nearby St Peter's Church. This event was captured in the documentary film 9/11, shot by Jules and Gedeon Naudet. Shannon Stapleton, photographer from Reuters, photographed Judge's body being carried out of the rubble by five men.[12] It became one of the most famous images related to 9/11. The Philadelphia Weekly reports the photograph is considered an American Pietà.[13]

Judge's body was formally identified by NYPD Detective Steven McDonald, a long-time friend of the priest. The NY Medical Examiner found that Judge died of "blunt force trauma to the head".[14

What an amazing city of people it was and is.

I remember it well. I was up early that morning, and weirdly enough chatting to a friend in Pennsylvania on MSN when she was telling me "OMG OMG! New York, plane crash! Put the news on" so I did just in time to watch the whole sorry episode unfold, from the initial tragic accident to purposeful attack.

Weird, numbing shit. A mate of mine called in shortly afterwards for a brew and we both just sat there, stunned, watching for an hour or so. We went out to do some odds and sods and just ended up driving around the city, trying to imagine the same kind of thing happening here.

One of the strangest days of my life, that's for sure.

I was about 10 at the time and in my final year of primary school. I remember walking home and my Mum greeting me at the door saying 'There have been bombs going off in America' (I know, I know my Mum is a bit dim). I was watching it for myself on television and just couldn't get my head around it. I remember thinking about it happening in London, Liverpool and I was shit scared. I had problems as a child in terms of school I had an over active imagination and often had vivid dreams of being taken away amongst other screwed up shite. So I was naturally shitting it.

I remember going out later on that evening and shitting ourselves when a plane went over head.

Looking back at how the diaster unfolded it makes me sick when people come out 'It was the government that what did it' because it's bullshit. It makes you realise that if you've got a purpose and the know how you can commit acts of atrocities like no other.

I was cleaning the car at my folks' place a few days before heading back to Liverpool for the new uni year. After the first tower was hit, when it was assumed to be an accident, I said I'd only been thinking recently that there's been no major crash for a while.

I was sitting in my apartment in Sydney, 5 months into a 12 month visit, and watched it for hours without moving. A housemate of mine walked in the living room after a night out (we were 14 hours ahead of NYC) and wanted to know what film I was watching when she saw the 2nd plane hit.

Surreal just watching it, and still seems unbelievable today.

A lot of good documentaries on at the minute as Dougie mentioned. The one on ITV1 the other night with Cheney, Laura Bush, Rumsveldt and Giuliani was very good. Note to you all, if you have The History Channel, they are playing the news and street footage in real time from 1.46pm (the moment the first plane hit) for two hours on the 10th anniversary. I've got it on Sky+ and really looking forward to seeing it.

I think I was suspended from school or something because I remember waking up and turning on the television and the first plane had already hit but even the reporters were unsure of what type of aircraft. From the pictures it looked like the damage to the building was bad but really at that point I was still thinking a smaller type plane because I could not imagine that it was a large airliner. I remember them talking about how it was such a clear day and what could have gone wrong? Then I seen the 2nd plane hit and it became apparent what was going on. Then the Pentagon got hit and there was reports of other planes possibly hijacked. Then the buildings collapsing and people trying to out run the dust. Within a few hours they started talking about Bin Laden and it really looked like the government dropped the ball.

My mothers former boss Ruth, who was originally for Ireland, was traveling from Boston to California with her 4 year old daughter and her best friend. The best friend for some reason ended up on another flight which was the first plane to hit the WTC while Ruth and the daughter were on 2nd plane to hit. Her brother also happened to be in the WTC that day and made it out of the building after the first plane hit only to look up and see his sisters plane hit the 2nd tower. Pretty fucked up.

Still some days away, but still.

I was sitting in one of the computer halls of my institute of informatics when the word started to spread: Check out CNN, a plane crashed into one of the TTs in NW! My ex and I went home and turned on the tv, it was unreal watching the second plane hit.

It was a sad day then, and even a sadder day for all that followed.

yesterdays sunday times had a superb article about the jumpers and usa pretend they don't exist officially

the falling man photo shakes you up. 200 miles per hour head first.

yikes

There's a documentary out where they attempt to identify him. I think they identified him as a immigrant worker from the windows on the world restaurant. I'd expect that programme to be on again soon.

Was in my first week in seniors, mum picked me up from school after both planes had hit and I went on her job with her (collector), I was sat in the car looking through the window of a house while one of the towers fell, I just sat there shocked and not fully understanding what the fuck was happening. I got home and was glued to the TV for the rest of the night, I don't remember anything after that but I'll never forget sitting alone in the car trying to figure out why there was a tall building collapsing and people running round scared.

So unbelievably fucked up and a sad place to visit when I went a few months ago, so many brave people and fire fighters risked their lives to help others that day.

I was working in Liverpool at the time in the reception area of a Government building by James street, there was a tv in one of the rooms nearby and a security guard came out and mentioned what was going on, loads of people seemed to leave the building probably to go home and watch the news but I was staying in work till quite late as I was going to watch the Reds play Boavista that very night, still got the echo I bought that very day before the match kicked off.

The documentary on ITV the other night played the sounds of the bodies hitting the ground. First time I'd heard the impacts since it happened. As you say, the better of two options.

Check out the documentary by the two french blokes who were doing a documentary on the Fire Service on probably the worst day ever.

At one point they're in the lobby of one of the Towers and out of nowhere you here a huge bang, then another, and another. After a while they realise it's people throwing themselves out of windows and hitting the floor outside the lobby.

It happened on a Tuesday, right? I was fucked off because I had been working all week on the Daily Post business supplement, which went into the paper on a Wednesday. Waste of bloody time that turned out to be.
