I'm not from a wealthy family, but I would certainly say I've had a fairly privileged upbringing, and judging from the fact that Stu is clearly a well-educated guy I would say (without knowing him) that there's every chance the same is also true for him. So, another way of looking at it would be to ask why we are sympathetic towards people who are attacking a system which effectively supports our interests?

 

For the record, I sympathise with your situation at the moment, and I appreciate that being at the heart of it gives it a different shade. Nonetheless, as easy as it is to vilify people who destroy the things close to you, it rarely paints an accurate picture of the histories which lead them to that destruction. It doesn't have to change the way you feel or absolve the actions of the perpetrators but I think that the underlying questions should be confronted rather than ignored.

The reason people live in a deprived area isn't normally through choice - they're usually born there. That doesn't automatically make them lazy, or scum. It does mean that they are considerably disadvantaged compared to people in affluent areas - like Bath, York, Cambridge, and Chipping Norton. It makes it considerably more difficult for them to struggle out of it. They are disadvantaged by a dysfunctional family life. They are educationally disadvantaged (schools with bigger class sizes). They are disadvantaged by a lack of funding for higher education. They are disadvantaged by a lack of employment opportunities, the traditional jobs having long since disappeared to the far east. They are disadvantaged by a lack of daddy's contacts. The especially clever ones may make it out. But the vast majority don't.

 

And when the gap between themselves and those at the top of the pile grows bigger, and bigger, sooner or later something gives.

 

Ken Livingstone made an excellent point when he said that you're dealing with people who don't feel a part of society, and so they are less likely to conform to it's rules.

 

In the 80's the Conservative government introduced a way of thinking in this country that greed was good, and looking after yourself was more important than looking after your community. They introduced the dog-eat-dog dogma, and this is what happens when the mongrels and curs band into a pack and go raiding. We didn't get to this position from a peaceful protest on Saturday.
