Fields of Athenry - the Lyrics

By a lonely prison wall

I heard a young girl calling

Michael they are taking you away

For you stole Trevelyn's corn

So the young might see the morn.

Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay.

Chorus

Low lie the Fields of Athenry

Where once we watched the small free birds fly.

Our love was on the wing

we had dreams and songs to sing

It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.

By a lonely prison wall

I heard a young man calling

Nothing matters Mary when you're free,

Against the Famine and the Crown

I rebelled they ran me down

Now you must raise our child with dignity.

Chorus

By a lonely harbour wall

She watched the last star falling

As that prison ship sailed out against the sky

Sure she'll wait and hope and pray

For her love in Botany Bay

It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.

Chorus

Thank you for this one. Brought back some happy memories as it was one of my Mum's favourite songs.

The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll

William Zanzinger killed poor Hattie Carroll

With a cane that he twirled around his diamond ring finger

At a Baltimore hotel society gath'rin'

And the cops were called in and his weapon took from him

As they rode him in custody down to the station

And booked William Zanzinger for first-degree murder

But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears

Take the rag away from your face

Now ain't the time for your tears.

William Zanzinger who at twenty-four years

Owns a tobacco farm of six hundred acres

With rich wealthy parents who provide and protect him

And high office relations in the politics of Maryland

Reacted to his deed with a shrug of his shoulders

And swear words and sneering and his tongue it was snarling

In a matter of minutes on bail was out walking

But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears

Take the rag away from your face

Now ain't the time for your tears.

Hattie Carroll was a maid in the kitchen

She was fifty-one years old and gave birth to ten children

Who carried the dishes and took out the garbage

And never sat once at the head of the table

And didn't even talk to the people at the table

Who just cleaned up all the food from the table

And emptied the ashtrays on a whole other level

Got killed by a blow, lay slain by a cane

That sailed through the air and came down through the room

Doomed and determined to destroy all the gentle

And she never done nothing to William Zanzinger

And you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears

Take the rag away from your face

Now ain't the time for your tears.

In the courtroom of honor, the judge pounded his gavel

To show that all's equal and that the courts are on the level

And that the strings in the books ain't pulled and persuaded

And that even the nobles get properly handled

Once that the cops have chased after and caught 'em

And that ladder of law has no top and no bottom

Stared at the person who killed for no reason

Who just happened to be feelin' that way witout warnin'

And he spoke through his cloak, most deep and distinguished

And handed out strongly, for penalty and repentance

William Zanzinger with a six-month sentence

Oh, but you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears

Bury the rag deep in your face

For now's the time for your tears.

Seven Curses

Old Reilly stole a stallion

But they caught him and they brought him back

And they laid him down on the jailhouse ground

With an iron chain around his neck

Old Reilly’s daughter got a message

That her father was goin’ to hang

She rode by night and came by morning

With gold and silver in her hand

When the judge he saw Reilly’s daughter

His old eyes deepened in his head

Sayin’, “Gold will never free your father

The price, my dear, is you instead”

“Oh I’m as good as dead,” cried Reilly

“It’s only you that he does crave

And my skin will surely crawl if he touches you at all

Get on your horse and ride away”

“Oh father you will surely die

If I don’t take the chance to try

And pay the price and not take your advice

For that reason I will have to stay”

The gallows shadows shook the evening

In the night a hound dog bayed

In the night the grounds were groanin’

In the night the price was paid

The next mornin’ she had awoken

To know that the judge had never spoken

She saw that hangin’ branch a-bendin’

She saw her father’s body broken

These be seven curses on a judge so cruel:

That one doctor will not save him

That two healers will not heal him

That three eyes will not see him

That four ears will not hear him

That five walls will not hide him

That six diggers will not bury him

And that seven deaths shall never kill him

Mr Zimmerman-Idiot Wind

Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press

Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out quick but when they will I can only guess

They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy

She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me

I can't help it if I'm lucky.

People see me all the time and they just can't remember how to act

Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts

Even you yesterday you had to ask me where it was at

I couldn't believe after all these years you didn't know even me better than that

Sweet lady.

Idiot wind blowing every time your move your mouth

Blowing down the backroads heading south

Idiot wind blowing every time you move your teeth

You're an idiot babe

It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe

I ran into the fortune-teller who said beware of lightning that might strike

I haven't known peace and quit for so long I can't remember what it's like

There's a lone soldier on the cross smoke pouring out of a boxcar door

You didn't know it you didn't think it could be done in the final end he won the wars

After losing every battle.

I woke up on the roadside daydreaming about the way things sometimes are

Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are making me see stars

You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies

One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes

Blood on your saddle.

Idiot wind blowing through the flowers on your tomb

Blowing through the curtains in your room

Idiot wind blowing every time you move your teeth

You're an idiot babe

It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart

You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn't enough to change my heart

Now everything's a little upside down, as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped

What's good is bad what's bad is good you'll find out when you reach the top

You're on the bottom.I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind

I can't remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed your eyes don't look

Into mine

The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone faced while the

Building burned

I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees while the

Springtime turned

Slowly into autumn.

Idiot wind blowing like a circle around my skull

From the Grand Coulee Dam to Capitol

Idiot wind blowing every time you move you teeth

You're an idiot babe.

It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

I can't feel you anymore, I can't even touch the books you've read

Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishing I was somebody else instead

Down the highway down the tracks down the road to ecstasy

I followed you beneath the stars hounded by your memory

And all you raging glory.

I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free

I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me

You'll never know the hurt I suffered not the pain I raise above

And I'll never know the same about you your holiness or your kind of love

And it makes me feel so sorry.

Idiot wind blowing through the buttons of our coats

Blowing through the letters that we wrote

Idiot wind blowing through the dust upon our shelves

We're idiots babe

It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves.

Nicky my child he stands there with the wind in his hair

Wondering whether the water the wind of the where

I fear that someday he might ask me if mine is the blame

And I've got no reply save to tell him it's all just a game

And Heather and I lay together and I was in love

She weighted up the gains and the losses and gave me the shove

The fear of mankind's untogetherness pounds in my heart

The deceit of my friends the betrayals of which I am part

And O how the sea she roars with laughter

And howls with the dancing wind

To see my two feet standing here questioning

And I'm just a social experiment tailored to size

I've tried out the national machine and the welfare surprise

I'm the rich man the poor man the peace man the war man the beast

The festive consumer who ends up consumed in the feast

And my fife eyed promoter is clutching two birds in the bush

He's a thief he's as bad as the joker they're both in the rush

He's telling me Ghandi was handy and Jesus sold his ring

(Dunno who to, God maybe)

"And everyone knows dat dis dough's gonna make me de king"

And O how the sea she roars with laughter

And howls with the dancing wind

To see my two feet standing here questioning

Meanwhile the ticket collectors are punching their holes

Into your memories your journeys and into your souls

Your life sentence starts and the judge hands you down a spare wig

Saying: "Get out of that and goodbye old boy have a good gig"

And the town label makers stare down with their gallery eyes

And point with computer stained fingers each time you arise

To the rules and the codes and the system that keeps them in chains

Which is where they belong with no poems no love and no brains

And O how the sea she roars with laughter

And howls with the dancing wind

To see my two feet standing there questioning

Meanwhile the TV commercials are sweeping the day

Brainwashing innocent kids into thinking their way

The wet politicians and clergymen have much to say

Defending desires of the sheep they are leading astray

And Ma's favourite pop star is forcing a grin he's a smash

Obliging the soft-headed viewers to act just as flash

The village TV hooks its victims on give away cash

The addicts are numbers who serve to perpetuate trash

And O how the sea she roars with laughter

And howls with the dancing wind

To see my stupid poetry shuffleing

And the bankers and tycoons and hoarders of money and art

Full up with baubles and bibles and full of no heart

Who travel first class on a pleasure excursion to fame

Are the eyes that are guiding society's ludicrous aim

And the village is making its Sunday collection in church

The church wobbles 'twixt hell and heaven's crumbling perch

Unnoticed the money box loudly endorses the shame

As the world that Christ fought is supported by using his name

And O how the sea she roars with laughter

And howls with the dancing wind

To see my stupid poetry burbling

And the pin-striped sardine-cum-magician is packed in his train

Censoring all of the censorship filling his brain

He glares through his armour-plate vision and says "Hmm, insane"

The prisoner is taking his shoes off to walk in the rain

And the luminous green prima donna is sniffing the sky

She daren't tread the earth that she's smelling her birth was too high

Her bank balance castle is built on opinion and fear

Which is all she allows within three hundred miles of her ear

And O how the sea she roars with laughter

And howls with the dancing wind

To see my stupid poetry burbling

And I've seen all your pedestal values your good and your bad

If you really believe them your passing is going to be hard

And I've thought through our thought and I know that its blind silly season

Occurs when our reasoning is trying to fathom a reason

And if you really know it's all a joke but you're just putting me on

Well it's sure a good act that you've got 'cos you never let on

But if all of that supersale overkill world is for real

Well there's nowhere to go kid so you might as well start to freewheel

And O how the sea she roars with laughter

And howls with the dancing wind

To see my two feet standing there burbling

And I had this dream in here same time as standing awake

These various visions rushed through as I giggled and quaked

The distant guns thunder my end and I duck for a while

Auntie Lily is handing me candy she chuckles I smile

And our village is where I was born and it's where I will die

And I'll never be able to leave it whatever I try

The ebb and the flow of the forces of life pass me by

Which is all that I'll know from my birth to my last gasping sigh

And O how the sea she roars with laughter

And howls with the dancing wind

To see the dying lying there obeying

My age and my time

The blood fire wine and rhyme

That fills my dream reminds me of an atom in a bubble on a wave

That held its breath for one sweet second then was popped and disappeared

Into fruitful futilities meaningless meaning

Meaningless meaning

Under the toadstool lover down by the dream

Everything flowing over rainbows downstream

Silver the turning water flying away

I'll come to see you sooner I'm on my way

And there's a mirror that I'm looking straight through

And I get it

And there's a doorway that I'm ducking into

To forget it

But flashing just beyond the sky the shattering midnight gathers

And reminding me behind my mind the earth quakes the sun flakes flutter

Over the mountain fairground

Candy flies stay

Under the moonshine fountain

I'm on my way

Lemon tree blossom ladies

Poured my tea

After the blue sky breezes following me

There's a river that I'm making it with

And I know it

And I'm floating to I don't care where

I just go it

But flashing just beyond the sky the shattering midnight gathers

And reminding me behind my mind the earth quakes the sun flakes flutter

Daffodil April petal hiding the game

Forests of restless chessmen life is the same

Tides in the sand sun lover watching us dream

Covered in stars and clover rainbows downstream

And the question in the great big underneath is forever

And the fanfare that I'm forcing through my teeth answers "Never"

But the flashing just beyond the sky the shattering midnight gathers

And reminding me behind my mind the earth quakes the sun flakes flutter

The pumpkin coach and the rags approach and the wind is devouring the ashes

Happy birthday to you,

happy birthday to youi,

happy birthday dear ............,

happy birthday to you.

Indicates the presence of friends, cake and alcohol. Also means that you've made it through another year - while it reminds you that you are one step closer to your demise. Deep little ditty.

Good shout with Hattie Carroll, "It's alright Ma I'm only bleedin" is another peach from Dylan lyric wise. Whilst I love the actual song "Idiot Wind" I think the lyrics are clumsy in parts, although I'm probably alone on that one. The version of Idiot Wind he did on the Rolling Thunder Revue tour is majestic.

Love the lyrics to this song, one of many outstanding lyrical efforts on the album, and it is particularly poignant when it gets to the final two sections of the song.

Scroobius Pip - Angels

Things in life ain’t always quite what they seem, there’s more than

one given angle to any one given scene. So bear that in mind next

time you try to intervene on any one given angle, on any one given

scene.

MARK:

My name is mark & I go to Uni & college

Don’t socialise that much I just revise & build knowledge.

At times I find that I become a virtual recluse

I let my belt of interaction hang decisively loose

But I came here to learn and that’s the life that I choose

So if people think that I’m a geek they can bring their abuse

See a lot of people think that I’m boring and say

That maybe I’m a weirdo or maybe I’m gay

But I don’t care coz when I get a good job & good pay

I’ll get a house for just my brother and me some day

And that’s the reason I’m here, just to build for the future

And if it means better grades yeah I’d even sleep with my tutor

Things in life ain’t always quite what they seem, there’s more than

one given angle to any one given scene. So bear that in mind next

time you try to intervene on any one given angle, on any one given

scene.

PAUL:

My name is Paul & I’ve been a guard for 6 months

The shop that I guard is better than most dumps

That’s why I like it here & my boss he’s a pro

He’s taught me tricks of the trade that other guards wouldn’t know

I’ve learnt that in this game, there’s some rules, you gotta bend

And not to forget these thieving pricks ain’t your friend

And that appearance is key coz there’s a message to send

And above all of that it’s your fellow guards you defend.

The other day my boss was stabbed by some lowlife psycho

He’s in hospital now so every night that’s where I go

He’s on the brink right now but he’s showing no fear though

Coz if he dies there in bed he knows he’s dying a hero.

Things in life ain’t always quite what they seem, there’s more than

one given angle to any one given scene. So bear that in mind next

time you try to intervene on any one given angle, on any one given

scene.

KEITH:

My name is Keith and I ain’t so much a racist

But if one reached out a hand I’d decline their embraces

I work security in a shop in charge of 5 other guards

And I’ve got all of their respect coz I run this shit hard

I nicked one thief today; he didn’t show enough respect & attention

So I grabbed him by the neck, see that’s my form of redemption

I do no real harm; just make sure that it hurts

It ain’t going by the book but believe me it works

Then I sent him on his way, that little shit knows the score now

Instil a little bit of fear. He won’t darken my door now

And that’s what I do. Stop these kids from decline.

Do what their parents wouldn’t do, put down some boundaries &

lines.

Things in life ain’t always quite what they seem, there’s more than

one given angle to any one given scene. So bear that in mind next

time you try to intervene on any one given angle, on any one given

scene.

BILLY:

My name is Billy & I’ve been beaten since I was 3

Mum died when I was born and dad takes it out on me

He ain’t a bad man. He just gets drunk & feels alone

I tend to go for a walk, hope he’s asleep when I get home.

I don’t like to talk about it much coz like I said it ain’t his fault

It only happens when he’s drunk as a last resort

I wanted to get him a gift to show my support

But I had no money so I stole & I guess I got caught.

At times like that I kinda switch of my mind

Stare blankly into space and let what happens unwind

That seemed to anger this guard, he put his hands round my neck

He said it's time for me to learn some manners & respect

It hurt, but I’ve had worse before

But it made me realise life was just a series of wars

I went straight home that day and locked the bathroom door

Took a blade to both wrists, they won't hurt me no more.

Things in life ain’t always quite what they seem, there’s more than

one given angle to any one given scene. So bear that in mind

next time you try to intervene on any one given angle, on any one

given scene.

MARK:

My name is Mark and today I was told my brother was dead

I returned from Uni and burst into tears on his bed

Under his pillow, I found his suicide note & I read

What had happened that day & what had fucked up his head.

The anger I felt right then there no words to express

I filled up with so much rage there was no way to digest

I grabbed a knife & walked to town, it was time to regress

Back to an eye for and eye, last breath for last breath

I went straight up to the counter & said I’d like to speak

To the guard that nicked my brother on Tuesday of this week

As the girl went through a door & disappeared out of sight

I put my hand in my pocket and I gripped the knife tight

This was it, as she pointed me out to the guard

My hand began to shake as held the knife so hard

Then as he approached me there was nothing to say

I stabbed that fucker eight times before they could take me away.

Things in life ain’t always quite what they seem, there’s more than

one given angle to any one given scene. So bear that in mind

next time you try to intervene on any one given angle, on any one

given scene

step out the front door like a ghost into the fog where no one notices the

contrast of white on white.

and in between the moon and you the angels get a better view of the crumbling

difference between wrong and right.

i walk in the air, between the rain, through myself and back again where? i

don't know

maria says she's dying, through the door i hear her crying why? i don't know

round here we always stand up straight

round here something radiates

maria came from nashville with a suitcase in her hand she said she'd like to

meet a boy who looks like elvis.

she walks along the edge of where the ocean meets the land just like she's

walking on a wire in the circus.

she parks her car outside of my house and takes her clothes off, says she's

close to understanding Jesus.

she knows she's more than just a little misunderstood, she has trouble acting

normal when she's nervous.

round here we're carving out our names

round here we all look the same

round here we talk just like lions, but we sacrifice like lambs

round here she's slipping through my hands

oohhh sleeping children better run like the wind, out of the lightning dream

mama's little baby better get herself in out of the lightning

she says "it's only in my head."

she says "sshhh...i know it's only in my head."

but the girl on the car in the parking lot says: "man, you should try to take a

shot. can't you see my walls are crumblin?"

then she looks up at the building and says she's thinkin of jumping. she says

she's tired of life, she must be tired of something.

round here she's always on my mind

round here (hey man)i got lots of time

round here we're never sent to bed early and nobody makes us wait

round here we stay up very, very, very, very late.

i can't see nothing, nothing round here (oh)

won't you catch me if i'm falling?

won't you catch me if i'm falling?

won't you catch me cuz i'm falling down on you.

see i'm under the gun round here

oh man i said i'm under the gun round here

and i can't see nothing, nothing round here.

All the rain came down

On a cold new town

As it carried you away

From your father's hand

That always seemed like a fist

Reaching out to make you pay

He came like a hero from the factory floor

With the sun and moon as gifts

But the only son you ever saw

Were the two he left you with

Oh Lord where did the feeling go

Oh Lord I never felt so low

Now the skirts hang so heavy around your head

That you never knew you were young

Because you played chance with a lifetime's romance

And the price was far too long

Oh Lord where did the feeling go

Oh Lord I never felt so low

Oh Lord where did the feeling go

Oh Lord I never felt so low

Oh Lord where did the feeling go

Oh Lord I never felt so low

Oh Lord where did the feeling go

Oh Lord I never felt so low

Oh Lord where did the feeling go

Oh Lord I never felt so low

They're good aren't they? I use them in class from time to time, to try and get ideas across. Letter from God To Man is my favourite

She stares at the screen, at the little words of green

Tries to do remember what to do next

There's a trace of frustration that crosses her face

Searching for the key she should press

And I would help her if I only know how

But these things are a mystery to me too

And it seems that the Corporate eyes they are watching

She fears for her job and the moments are passing

I stare at her nametag and I think to myself

Both you and I, we never asked for any of this

So let's take a walk up past the chemical works

Where the sky turns green at night

And we'll talk about getting away from here

Some different kind of life

But even in the freshest mountain air

The jet fighters practise overhead

And they're drilling these hills for uranium deposits

And they'll bury the waste for our children to inherit

And though this is all done for our own benefit,

I swear we never asked for any of this

This golden age of communication

Means everyone talks at the same time

And liberty just means the freedom to exploit

Any weakness that you can find

Turn off the TV just for a while

Let us whisper to each other instead

And we'll hope that the Corporate ears do not listen

Lest we find ourselves committing some kind of treason

And filed in the tapes without rhyme, without reason

While they tell us that it's all for our own protection,

I swear we never asked for any of this

Yes, they are excellent, and Scroobius Pip's lyrics are outstanding. Him and Kele Okereke are two of the songwriters of the past decade that, for me, really consistenly hit the spot with their lyrics.

The silicon chip inside her head

Gets switched to overload

And nobody’s gonna go to school today

She’s gonna make them stay at home

And daddy doesn’t understand it

He always said she was good as gold

And he can see no reasons

'Cos there are no reasons

What reason do you need to be show-ow-ow-ow-own?

Tell me why

I don’t like Mondays

Tell me why

I don’t like Mondays

Tell me why

I don’t like Mondays

I wanna shoo-oo-woo-woo-woo-oot the whole day down

The Telex machine is kept so clean

And it types to a waiting world

And mother feels so shocked

Father’s world is rocked

And their thoughts turn to their own little girl

Sweet 16 ain’t that peachy keen

Now that ain’t so neat to admit defeat

They can see no reasons

'Cuz there are no reasons

What reasons do you need?

Oh Oh oh whoa whoa

Tell me why

I don’t like Mondays

Tell me why

I don’t like Mondays

Tell me why

I don’t like Mondays

I wanna shoo-oo-oo-woo-woo-oot

The whole day down, down, down, shoot it all down

And all the playing's stopped in the playground now

She wants to play with the toys a while

And school's out early and soon we'll be learning

And the lesson today is how to die

And then the bullhorn crackles

And the captain tackles

(With the problems of the how's and why's)

And he can see no reasons

'Cos there are no reasons

What reason do you need to die, die?

Oh Oh Oh

Tell me why

I don’t like Mondays

Tell me why

I don’t like Mondays

Tell me why

I don’t like

I don’t like (Tell me why)

I don’t like Mondays

Tell me why

I don’t like

I don’t like (Tell me why)

I don’t like Mondays

Tell me why

I don't like Mondays

I wanna shoo-oo-oo-woo-woo-woot the whole day down

Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Shipbuilding

Is it worth it, a new winter coat and shoes for the wife

And a bicycle on the boy's birthday

It's just a rumour that was spread around town

By the women and children, soon we'll be shipbuilding

Well I ask you, the boy said

"Dad they're going to take me to task,

But I'll be back by Christmas"

It's just a rumour that was spread around town

Somebody said that someone got filled in

For saying that people get killed in the results of their shipbuilding

With all the will in the world

Diving for dear life, when we could be diving for pearls

It's just a rumour that was spread around town

A telegram or a picture postcard

Within weeks we'll be reopening the shipyard

And notifying the next of kin, once again

It's all we're skilled in,

We will be shipbuliding

With all the will in the world

Dining for dear life, when we could be diving for pearls
