I don't speak much German, but it's probably one of the easier languages to learn for an English speaker. I speak English, Spanish and French, all to varying degrees of competency. I tried learning Mandarin Chinese. That can fuck off.

Despite living in Germany for a while when in the forces I can only order beer in German, in fact I can order beer in a lot of languages. I speak French though.

English and Welsh (go far with that), I'm thinking of taking up a French course this September though.

I have a habit of forming a school level sentence in French, then half way through saying it i find myself switching over to welsh. That really confuses whom ever i'm trying to talk to over there.

The Only Falls n Horses bit always cracks me up when they are trying to speak German.

I can say small bits in Spanish and can say more when I am out there as pick it up quite easily but thats about it.

To be fair I struggle with the English language, let alone being fluent in another.

English, Spanish, 中文. (If you count it, I can read Traditional, and Juyin, they are like other languages in terms of learning them)

My understanding of written French is uncanny, but I can't speak it worth a lick. Same with German... I can read German pretty well, but I'll be buggered to speak it. I know a lot of German/French words though.

I can do the basics in a bunch of other languages though.

Who is TLW's top linguist?

I'm thinking of learning German. Anyone else speak it? How hard was it to learn?

I speak English as my mother tongue, and I am also fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and French.

Learning German or for that matter any other germanic language such as dutch swedish etc. is supposedly a lot easier for an English speaker as our language is also germanic so therefore that sentence structure as well as the grammer is very similar When we learn romance laguages such as French, Spanish etc. we have to learn the grammer as well as all the verbs etc. plus we also have to learn the genders and all the grammer that accomanies those genders which is a BITCH!

English, Gujarati (fairly OK), Hindi (very rudimentary), Swahili (odd words), Panjabi (swear words) and passable touristy versions of French, German, Spanish and Italian.

When I'm abroad, I seem to take on the appearance of a multilingual fount of knowledge, judging by the number of times complete strangers automatically assume I can translate for them. I was also once assumed to be Italian by a hotel concierge in Milan. Mange tout, Rodders!
