That's the thing that gets me- I want people operating hundreds of tons of machinery carrying hundreds of passengers to be well paid, well trained and not run into the ground.

Yeah. I'd also prefer them not to be half-asleep because they haven't had a break.

T'internet, its quite widely reported. Mainly about taking 9 people to change a lightbulb, which did seem a bit too silly to mention.

That bit sounds made up.

There's a long history (that pre-dates British Rail and was aggravated further by privatisation) of fragmentation in the UK rail industry, which means that the technology used on one track can be significantly different from that used on another nearby track.  The result is that someone competent to do safety-critical work on one track wouldn't be competent on another; and, in any case, there are different private companies paying for the work on those tracks. The Government responsible for the persistence of these inefficiencies are lying about it in an attempt to turn people against the unions. Don't buy it.

Coming to a union near you.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has ordered the United Mine Workers of America to pay Warrior Met Coal $13.3 million for expenses incurred by the company over the course of the more than year-long miners’ strike in Brookwood, Alabama. In addition, the union must also pay $300,000 to “individuals” affiliated with Warrior Met for vehicular damages.

Good march and rally in town today, with about a couple of thousand people flying flags for RMT, FBU, Unison, CWU, Unite, etc. Some decent speakers (including Mr Dempsey) and a few rousing choruses of Fuck The Tories.

Thought the FBU guy was very good
