Royal family costs each taxpayer 69p a year - Home News, UK - The Independent

Not bad value for money when you consider the amount of cash tourism brings in, and to be honest, I cant see many Japanese or Americans wanting to take pictures of an incubator waving from the balcony of Buck Palace.

I'll take my 69p thanks.

Do you have any figures on how much of the revenue generated by tourism is directly attributable to the royal family, in pence per taxpayer? How much we'd be guaranteed to lose from the vast amount generated by London's tourism trade should we level Buck House and replace it with a car-park, or Londo-Disney?

I'd love to see the end of the monarchy not only for the fact that they make us at best a quaint joke, but also that it might signal an end to the hereditary class system that prevails in this country. The sense that you can be born into greatness. The idea that nepotism and sectarianism are acceptable if you hide them under the banner of history and tradition.

It's lazy and nouveau middle class to accept the royal family and all the hypocricy and history of insanity that comes with it.

Philip is like an embarrassingly old fashioned uncle, but one that has cost us all a fortune to keep in a job that he clearly doesn't even like himself. I neither like nor dislike him, but I do pity the poor fucker.

I have betted anyone a tenner to find me a picture of Andrew 'in battle' in The Falklands with no winners. He was in a helicopter moving supplies well away for the danger zones.

Two things....I cannot find any pictures of my uncle fighting in the Falklands, but he was deffo there,

Andrew was piloting the first helicopter that rescued the men off the Sir Galahad, so that was quite in the firing line i would say

Kenny was not included in the Queens list

Awards for Sport make up 3.5 per cent of the total. The awards include a knighthood for Henry Cecil, the Horse Racing Trainer; an OBE for John Amaechi, the first Briton to play in the National Basketball Association in America, who founded the Amaechi Basketball Centre in Manchester. Since 2004 he has been trustee and patron of the UK Sport's Charity International Development through Sport, and since 2007 he has been the National Coming Out Day spokesman for the Human Rights campaign.

Among the well known names being honoured, there are knighthoods to Bruce Forsyth, the Entertainer; a DBE for Jennifer Murray, BBC Presenter of Women’s Hour. The CBEs include Colin Firth, the Actor; and Bryan Ferry, the Singer and Songwriter. The Actors, Bernard Cribbens and Tim Brooke-Taylor have been awarded OBEs. There is also an OBE for Lee Westwood, the Golfer, and from the England Cricket Team there are OBEs for Andrew Flower, Team Director, and to Andrew Strauss, Team Captain and Alastair Cook, the youngest Englishman to reach 5,000 Test runs, is awarded an MBE.

I found the pictures of your uncle. He was deffo there. Saving the locals of Port Stanley*

*Fighting a pointless bully boy "war" with the sole aim of keeping Margaret Thatcher in power despite record levels of unemployment back home, desperately poor opinion polls, and a mire of piss poor daily revelations of political sleaze.

Well done him.

But with great respect to your uncle, he was not a royal or a potential war hero, and he actually would have put his life on the line for this country. If he (Andrew) was genuinely in a helicopter saving lives I can guarantee the BBC or the royal photographers would be zooming into his fat spoilt face from a mile away wanking over the commision they would get from this type of picture.

There is no way Andrew was there. I can't believe the guilability of some people.

I agree, as we all know that all the helo pilots who served in the FI had many many piccies taken during the evacuation of the Gallahad. (Thats sarcasm btw)

And the Royal photographers were sent out to capture any actions that a member of the royal household doing something brave might need for future reference as a bloke on a website might not actually believe at some point 30 years later that he actually did anything of merit.

Have a fucking word with yourself.

He was there, he was in a helo and he was in one of the first helicopters at the Gallahad after it was hit, regardless of the fact there arent any piccies of him at close range, and given the fact it was a hot contact situation, I very much doubt any of the pilots at that very moment in time had any close up shots of them.

Forget for one nano second that you hate the royal family, and try to imagine how the hell you would get a close up picture of a bloke, in a helicopter, 30 years or so ago, flying in after a missile strike on a ship.

Or is it me not thinking about combat paps?

Sorry FP, but anti royal you might be, and I can gladly accept that, but you are talking and asking complete shite, sorry but you are.

And Simon Weston (who is a top bloke btw) got the piccies taken well after the evacuation, once the Harriers and cleared the threat of any more hits.

Im not saying Andrew is a war hero, far from it, but I wont accept that because he happens to be 4th inline to the throne, he didnt do his bit, because I can assure you, he did, as has Harry.

And a shit load more than the majority of the gobshites on here willing to slag him without ever having been close to that sort of situation.

Thanks Lurtz.

Its clear in that video from his perfect hair that he has never worn a helmet or indeed flying googles which simply adds to my conclusion the he wasn't doing anything. Also, how do we know its the Falklands.

Also, why is the lead singer from The Sparks in the background?

Because he's being interviewed by Brian "I counted them all out and I counted them all back in" Hanrahan. You know, the BBC bloke who was, well, in the Falklands.

Anyway, that's the keyboard player, not the vocalist.

Phil is probably fairly typical of his generation, in my experience anyway. The majority of old people have what one might call a 'narrow' world view and can often be cunts.

One thing that pisses me off is the way the royals always get a bye into the officer corps of the military, much like many other members of that 'class'.

Imagine getting ordered around by a retard like Prince Harry? Someone who only finished school because his teacher did his work for him? Fuck off. The royals (and there are thousands of them lest we forget, they're like a fucking iceberg, you only ever see the tip) underpin our entire class system. As long as they are there, people will be entirely comfortable with the idea of people being born into office, into power and into wealth. And that's wrong. The fact we live in a society that loses sleep over battery farming and women's pay equality but doesn't even bat an eyelid at shit like that - baffles me no end.
