Rafa's 'bad' signings and sell on fees

Recommended Posts

I've been doing a bit of research into some of Rafa's signings, particularly in the early days and trying to see how much cash we got from sales. So far I've found:

Sebastian Leto - £5m Panathaniakos

Mark Gonzales - £5m Real Betis

Mikel San Jose -£3.5m (I think)

Krisztian Nemeth - £1m Olympiakos (+sell on fee!)

Can you think of any other bits of business by Rafa that bought in a few bob that have been forgotten about? I was amused to see Utd let Rossi go for £6.5m. Still I won't be laughing if they have a sell on fee!

I'm just trying to counter the idea that Rafa was some crazy spendthrift who bought a load of s*** to Anfield. It's basically what Hansen (who should know better) accused him of when he was sacked. I disagreed with some of the later buys as over-priced or downright bad - Keane, Aquilani - but I think there's a forgotten side in all this.

Rafa had lots of player turnover during his time as we were never really rich enough to get first choice targets all the time and perhaps missed out on a few well documented stars. So he bought lower and upgraded incrementally a few times.

That said, his record was patchy, like a lot of managers, and it is not difficult to demonstrate that he wasted loads of money.

All in all it was a mixed bag. We know what he did though. He won us no.5 and got us to second in the Prem. Perhaps under better owners he might have made the final step in the league and built a true dynasty here, but that wasn't to be.

I don't know what Hansen said exactly, but this is Rafa's recent comment in The Sunday Times -

"Maybe next time I try to sign less players and go for more quality".

If only he'd thought that at the beginning.
