Three men have been arrested following a BBC Panorama investigation into abuse at a young offenders centre in Kent.

Police said they were being held on suspicion of child neglect.

The BBC understands the three men were among four team leaders at the Medway Secure Training Centre, in Rochester, who were sacked on Tuesday.

A further three men at the unit, run by security firm G4S - two duty operations managers and a training centre assistant - remain suspended.

A female duty operations manager has been placed on restricted duties, while a male healthcare worker employed by Central and North West London NHS Trust (CNWL) has also been suspended.

A trust spokesman said: "One CNWL staff member contacted us before the programme to say that they had been present at one incident in the film; the footage broadcast confirmed this.

"Whilst we are pleased he came forward, he has been suspended whilst that incident is fully investigated."

The allegations relate to 10 boys aged 14 to 17.

Thats something, I suppose, but the whole system of incarcerating children, because that is what they are, in conditions like those portrayed is utterly Dickensian. Where was the 'training'? Where was the activity? Where was the care?

More pertinently, where is the political capital in providing any of the above?

I'm afraid that it's all about looking tough down here with a hard right government and fascist press

And ever has been, it would seem. Out of sight out of mind.

Now, I'm not saying our system isn't without its faults but at least the principles behind it are good ones

Nursing Homes Undercover Panorama

Panorama goes undercover in two nursing homes and finds evidence of cruelty and neglect. Reporter Janice Finch booked into the homes as a resident and witnessed staff rushed off their feet, leaving the privacy and dignity of some fellow residents often ignored. The company, which has a chain of homes in Cornwall, earns millions from NHS and local authority placements and has already been told to make improvements. An emergency safeguarding plan is now in place after the programme makers raised their concerns with the Care Quality Commission and other agencies.

Just for those that aren't aware...

It was Cornwall (as a local authority) that was banned from placing adults with a variety of mental health, learning and physical disabilities within the county for years because of the institutional, physical, financial and sexual abuse they routinely faced.

We've come so far haven't we...
