I always think you can just use a comma or a fullstop.

 

If the chicks love it I've gotta up my game. I'm currently in cahoots with* a student at Liverpool. She'd be even more impressed if I could throw a few semicolons into some texts.

I think that it is useful when you want to comma separate groups of words - making it clear that it is a list rather than a pause.
