Pogues thread

Shane MacGowan - Poet, comedian, genius!

It's the poetic genius of his lyrics which usually stands out for me, but my favourite song changes by the week.

At the moment I'm actually with TheHowieLama and The Boys From County Hell.

Saw them twice, about 5 years ago in Manchester at the MEN which was superb, and again at the Echo Arena in Liverpool about 3 years ago which was disappointing just because it was half empty. Not something I would have expected for a Pogues gig in Liverpool.

Next time they do yet another farewell last ever gig somewhere in the North West, I'll be there!

Not sure if anyone's heard but Philip Chevron died earlier today after a long battle with cancer.

He actually got the all clear a year or two back but they discovered a tumour on his brain that was inoperable in the summer, despite the fact it was always going to be terminal I'm shocked at how quick it's happened, he was posting on their forum about their upcoming tour last week.

Had a few whiskeys tonight in his memory, one of the genuinely good guys of music.  Hopefully they'll still be touring in December, if only to raise a glass to him.  I've got my tickets already!

One of the finest pieces of songwriting I've ever heard:

Just read Here Comes Everybody: The Story of the Pogues by James Fearnley (the bands accordionist) which is excellent. One for @Bjornebye definitely.

My Dad is good pals with Darryl the bass player, a brilliant bloke & knows his music inside & out. I've met them a few times when I was younger & Shane was always fucking blootered as you'd probably imagine. They always gave my brother & me backstage passes & free t-shirts.

I fucking love A Pair of Brown Eyes, put it on the jukey in the boozer last week.

I love the Pogues, well most of what they do, there is the odd ditty I have to ignore.

My daughter knew the lyrics to Sally Macellane at 6 and used to sing it in the car on the way to school. Surprising the police never stopped her really.

That was definitely not the video I was expecting, for this tune, when I heard that song first all those years ago. Some thought went into that.

What did you think it would be? Two people bent over pulling their arse cheeks apart?

This was one of my best ever jokes

Gonna have to make some time for that. I got introduced the Pogues when I was in 10th grade by my English teacher as he wanted us to experience a "real modern irish punk band". It wasn't necessarily modern at the time as this was the early 2000's but fuck me it was great. Been a fan ever since.

Sorry to hear that, just read your earlier post on him. Must have been great to meet them when you were a kid.
