I think it’s a generalisation. I have a number of American friends and they are as gobsmacked as we are at the antics of the average American god fearing flag shagger.

I agree with that. America is fucking massive and culturally diverse. It's not really a country, more a continent. Some yanks are sound, some yanks are fucking mental. They have a higher percentage of mental than we do, but that's not terrifically surprising when the country has loads of bible bashers, in one horse towns. But when they're cringey, they're cringey. But they make me feel no worse than some helmet banging on about farage.

Yeah I'm not saying they're all bonkers by any stretch just by and large very different to us and it's not always noticed due to common language.

It's the hypocrisy of Americans calling the stuff that goes on in places like the Middle East, North Korea or China batshit, yet having kids say the Pledge of Allegiance and other such bollocks at school every morning. Or, whether they are God-botherers or not, claiming something in their favour was an act of God. Or calling a championship baseball match-up the World Series when the competition itself is anything but global.

I've always said that about Americans. Other than the language we've got virtually nothing in common. I'm not a Brits abroad kind of person but whenever I've been in a situation where there's different nationalities I've usually gravitated to Europeans and away from Yanks after about the first five minutes.

It’s a funny one. Certain stuff over there is absolutely batshit and I often think are we over reacting at American films? Like we watch things like Virtues and Little Boy Blue and understand it and it hits home while they will watch Die Hard and feel exactly the same.

The problem with yanks abroad is they’ve generally got a bit of dollar and think that as Americans they’re a better species than everyone else because it’s drummed into them all their lives.

Bit then you see Brits abroad in Europe acting exactly the same.

Don’t get me started on American sporting events. That’s a whole new chapter of fucking madness. You could take a Yank to a 4:3 last minute win against United at Anfield and apart from the noise they’d say it was pretty boring. “No anthem,  no sodas fired into the crowd, now woman on a trapeze catching plates in her mouth, no mascot, nobody walking round passing food and drinks over (otters noses jaguars ear lobes styke) it was really weird man”

I remember an interview with Paul Weller and Pete Townsend and Pete saying ‘you should try and break America as we speak the same language’ and Weller saying ‘do we fuck!’ I paraphrase.

On the subject of the Star Spangled Banner, reading this made me remember two lads I knew years ago who were mates, and briefly shared a flat together. One of them used to regularly put Jimi Hendrix doing Star Spangled Banner on the stero at full blast as he left for work on 6-2, because the other one had got in pissed the night before and made a load of noise waking him up. I don’t know why, but the choice of song tickled me at the time, and still does thinking back.

The other lad who was the pissed one also played the guitar. Me and a few mates went back to his flat one Saturday night after a few beers to smoke some weed. This lad got his guitar out and proceeded to play it ridiculously loud. Baring in mind this was about 1am, it was no surprise that there was soon a loud knock on the door. It was the bizzies as the neighbours had obviously complained. They must have been knocking for a while because they asked my mate why he had taken so long to answer the door. My mate said he’d been on the bog, one of these bizzies must have had a sense of humour as he said “What? You’ve been playing the guitar on the bog?”. They gave my mate a warning and then went on their way. It was a good job they didn’t come into the flat because it like a scene from the Young Ones when Neil joins the police and has to raid a party where his mate Warlock and a load of others are doing bongs.

I’ve just remembered another detail, as well as the music at full blast, he would open all the windows as well when it was minus 5 outside, so when the other lad got up to turn the music off, his bollocks would be frozen as well.

https://nypost.com/2024/07/19/us-news/trump-shooter-thomas-matthew-crooks-last-online-search-was-for-porn/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=nypost

Failed Donald Trump assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks’ final online search before the Pennsylvania rally shooting last weekend was for pornography, according to a report.

Crooks’ last search was found when the FBI gained access to the 20-year-old’s encrypted Samsung phone, a senior law enforcement official told the Daily Beast.

Initial attempts to bust into the Android device at the Pittsburgh field office failed, and the phone had to be flown to Quantico for agents to take a look at it, the source explained.

The only other recent activity the FBI found on the phone was texts from Crooks’ parents asking where he was.

The messages started around 1 p.m. and continued through the afternoon.

Crooks’ parents apparently believed their son had taken one of his father’s AR-15 rifles and gone to a local shooting range.

Around 6 p.m., Crooks opened fire on the Trump rally at the Butler Farm Show grounds — grazing Trump’s ear, killing one rally attendee and critically wounding two others.

Crooks was shot dead by a Secret Service sniper.

“By 6 p.m., he was dead,” the source told the Daily Beast.

Agents found four rifle magazines by his body, as well as a remote control that could detonate the explosives found in his car nearby.

Six days after the assassination attempt, the FBI has mostly finished looking at Crooks’ phone and is now focused on his laptop and hard drives that were found in his bedroom, they added.

So far, investigators have found a troubling online history that included searches for Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley and other mass shooters, law enforcement sources told The Post.

Crooks had a photo on his phone of the mass shooter just after his arrest — and also had information about Crumbley’s parents, who were both convicted of involuntary manslaughter for failing to stop their son’s carnage, a CNN report said.

In the days leading up to the shooting, Crooks had looked up Trump and President Biden, as well as other elected figures.

Authorities are looking into the possibility that Crooks was focused on a mass-casualty event — and that Trump’s rally close to his home in Pennsylvania was a convenient target.

The discovery of porn searches on Crooks’ phone was “not unusual,” the source told the Daily Beast.
