I must admit him telling his 'pass the pound' story to howls of laughter from the biffs on Soccer AM about 8 years ago was when I lost all respect for him. If he wasn't too busy passing a quid about all match to see which one of them would buy the ale that night we may have actually won the league because it was our shit house defence which cost us it year in year out. Best thing GH ever did was bomb out no marks like Ruddock.

Neil Ruddock described himself as a "Hell Razor" but it is difficult to comprehend now how he got that reputation as today he is a very much grounded and a quiet person who... that couldn't be further from the truth actually...

Thanks for the link. Ruddock was never a player I liked I'm afraid. Lfchistory, however, is one of my favourite sites in the world ever. Stat porn for Liverpool fans.

Aye!

I concur!

Horrible, fat, cockney, obnoxious minge of a man! One of three Liverpool players I have truly despised!

Particularly when he did his 'one for the ladies' diagnal ball, to the back row of the stand!

My Neil Ruddock story.

One of my ex's used to play bingo at the Top Rank in Kensington, corner of Sheil Road.

One night, shes there getting all her stuff ready when some bloke comes over. "Excuse me love, that table is reserved for me." She asks "And who the fuck are you?". "Neil Ruddock", he replies, thinking that should be answer enough. Bear in mind she didn't give a toss for football, never heard of him so she answers "And what do you do?" And so on.

Cut a long story short, it ended up with the manager coming over, explaining that he was a "special guest" and so on, and she ended the whole thing with the manager buying her tickets and Ruddock buying her drinks and a taxi home.

She came home pissed as a fart "I've been getting vodkas all night from some fat footy player"

i met him once back in the summer of 96, in shorrocks hill, formby. it was the only place a 16 year old like me could get in and drink. he turned up and was chatting to a couple of nice looking birds and smoking a cigar. apparently although it was full of kids, players used to like it as they never got hassled too much, aggro wise, so could have a quite-ish drink on a friday. altough now i am older it might have been the jail bate. any ways he was smoking which is pretty poor.

i told him he should have played in the cup final cos phil babb is fucking shit, and he laughed and said 'well maybe next year.'

just thought i would share that with you.

ps the pound story is a fucking disgrace.

Never gave a fuck about playing for Liverpool at the time, now trades of us for the shit media 'career of sorts' he lives off now.

We have had many poor players over the years that havent been up to the mark but have at least tried.

Ruddock is just my most hated Liverpool player ever. Total waster.

  • 7 years later...

Neil Ruddock has lifted the lid on his horror tackle that left Andy Cole with two broken legs in a 1996 reserve match, admitting he “only meant to break one of his legs”.

The former Liverpool defender earned a reputation in the game for taking no prisoners in a career that saw him star for both Liverpool and Tottenham, as well as England.

And he has admitted that during his time at Liverpool, where he played from 1993 to 1998, facing Manchester United was one of his great pleasures.

“Basically, I loved kicking Andrew Cole,” Ruddock told talkSPORT.

“I know this is not big and it’s not clever, but in one tackle I did break both of his legs,” ‘Razor’ said in reference to the United versus Liverpool reserve match in 1996.

“I didn’t mean to break both of his legs if I’m honest,” Ruddock continued. “I only meant to break one… it wasn’t even a free-kick, it was ‘play on’.

“It was excellent because he let the ball run past him and I absolutely destroyed him. Again, I know it’s not big and it’s not clever, but it was great.”

When asked if there was any reason for disliking Cole, Ruddock replied: “I’m great friends with Teddy Sheringham and if Teddy Sheringham didn’t like him, then I don’t like him.”

Cole was on the books of United from 1995 to 2001, having joined in a £7.2million switch from Newcastle United.
