So he loves Atletico Bilbao more than them yet it’s our fault. I reckon it was the better choice of wine available in the Basque region compared to the Walton Asda to be honest.

No. It was him being frustrated by not being able to compete in Europe which made him leave. Plus all their great players got snapped up by Real Madrid, Barcelona, the Milan clubs, juventus and Bayern and they were left with  youth team players and had to start all over again.

Anything on any social media platform about their 1980s team is like an Internet dog whistle for all the bitter 1878 nonces to screech about Heysel, the Redshite and how badly they were affected far more than anyone else.

Howard Kendall was that frustrated about testing himself in Europe that he joined Bilbao who hadn't even qualified for European competition and then just played a few games in the uefa Cup the season after. He then came back and managed relegation threatened Man City who funnily enough weren't in Europe because of the ban. He also turned the Engalnd job down before it was offered to Graham Taylor.

Did Italy get 2 sides in the 1985/86 European Cup because of Hysel?

Just looking at the clubs and matches, Hellas Verona & Juventus both competed and played each other in the Last 16, which Juventus won on.

EDIT - Ignore me, I see Verona won the title.

I was reading an article over the weekend about how Guardiola has changed football here since arriving, proven by how teams rarely play long from goal kicks (though this season it has been notable that we have kicked long much more than we used to when we’ve played the better teams like Arsenal and Chelsea). One team really bucked the trend, and believe it or not, it was actually the school of science.

She’s just had an email from the club with a video of the new north stand (section where the away fans will be) and sure enough the away fans are tucked away in a corner out of view of the tv cameras. I know ours are in the corner but you can at least see them.

I've heard from various first hand testimonies that Howard did indeed enjoy the grape !

When they did the draw for 1985/86, they put Everton into the hat on the understanding that whichever team drew them (Anderlecht, as it happens) would get a by in the first round.

The fun thing about that is you can map out what Everton's hypothetical route to victory would have been; let's just say it would have been more of a challenge* than the Sunday league outfits they played en route to the Cup Winners Cup.

R1 Anderlecht

R2 Omonia Nicosia

QF Bayern

SF Steaua

Final - Barcelona

Having a European record of having beaten (checks notes) one decent side, they would have had to defeat four to get their hands on the trophy they insist they definitely would have won.

The whole thing about their great team being broken up by the ban is just another myth they peddle to blame us and a comfort blanket for them as an excuse for being shit.

Off the top of my head Southall, Sharp Bracewell, Ratcliffe, Van Den Hauwe and Sheedy played in the 1989 FA Cup Final. Andy Gray was about 33 and moved to Villa, Derek Mountfield went to Villa a few years later, Kevin Richardson went to Arsenal, Peter Reid was about 30 and signed for QPR in 1989.

Gary Stevens and Trevor Steven both went to Rangers. Lineker signed after the ban and then the board sold him to Barcelona when he didn't even want to leave. Rangers only played about 4 games in the European Cup before losing to anyone half decent.

The only one who went abroad was Adrian Heath who had a brief spell with Espanyol.

But they believe they were like the great Red Star Belgrade team whose players all left to play in Italy and Spain after winning the European Cup in 1991.

I think Terry Venables was there after the 1986 European Cup final and then Cruyff took over as Lineker wanted to leave because he was getting played on the wing by him.

He may have been linked to the job before TV went there.

They also pride themselves on the fact that there was no trouble at their final. The attendance was under 40k and it was mostly them there. My cousin said that Rapid had about 500 fans. They weren't playing the biggest club in Italy who like stabbing people.

But if they were they would’ve been nice to them no doubt.

Game has changed so, so much - even in our 70's/80's pomp Clemence and Grobbelaar used to just welly it long and from passbacks too, it was pick it up and smash it as far as could down the park. Everybody did it of course.

This will provide plenty of comedy if it was to happen.

As soon as he plays more than a few mins it will be 'he's motivated now he is at a proper club'....They'll be calling him the best Brazilian midfielder since Socrates and on and on it will go.

They'll shamelessly and distastefully use his Juventus links of course......

And of course when it all inevitably turns to shite they can just abuse him and call him a redshite bastard.

Did guardiola change it or has the rule change of not having to pass the ball out of the box to marked players made the change? For me that was the tipping point.

We did it less than most and I think a lot of it was to bypass the quagmire in midfield. We played it out a lot hence pass and move as you know.

The article was written to fit the journalist’s preconceived narrative, Klopp arrived before Guardiola and he certainly didn’t change his methods because of anything Guardiola was doing, we were trying to play football out from the back with limited players like Lovren and Sakho.

I would say Klopp has had even more of an influence on how football is played here, because every team tries to press from the front now, but it seems quite a few journalists have taken a dislike to Klopp given the initial reporting over the Coote videos, so we don’t see the arse kissing that we get with’Pep’.
