They bought Lineker the start of the 85-86 season (without European football) he had the season of his life and they still didn’t win anything. Only Andy Gray was  the notable ‘out’ in that 85-86 season but they bought Lineker in for him. Bobby Mimms, Bailey and Ian Atkins were the only others that left for a fee. The break up of that side didn’t happen in the aftermath of Heysel. Indeed they won the League 2 years after Heysel. Gary Stevens, Heath, Peter Reid, Mountfield, Harper left 3 years after Heysel, whilst Trevor Steven, Psycho and Bracewell left 4 years after Heysel. Trevor Steven and Gary Stevens being the only 2 you could argue moved for European football and that was 3 and 4 years after, whilst the rest took a step down and were on the decline.

Stop it with those facts getting in the way of all their lies and bitterness.

I think they could maybe argue they lost Kendall as an ultimate consequence of the ban, but I don't really buy into that either. They talk out of one side of their mouth saying the European cup was shite, worth less than the league and the true measure was the 38/42 game domestic season. Then out of the other side of their mouth they claim they lose players because there's no European football. Well which is it? If it's as shite as they say, nobody would move for it.

The reality is they lost Kendall and a couple of players to Scotland because of money. Perhaps with more money they could have retained them, but the European cup wasn't the cash cow the CL is today. They had a team coming to the end of its natural life and they bought badly when rebuilding it. Stuart McCall was a decent player, but not a patch on what their title teams had. Then the same can be said of cottee and Nevin, beagrie, a broken whiteside, Mike Newell. About the only top signing they made in that period was Martin keown. But here's the key to it all, they weren't struggling to attract players - cottee and Nevin being examples of that (the 2 of them costing around the same price as beardsley, Barnes and Aldridge), they just didn't make good choices when rebuilding, we did.

But let's blame the RS, it's easier than accepting the reality.

Despite what he used to say, I’m pretty certain Kendall joined Athletic Bilbao in a year when they didn’t even have European football. Agree with what you say entirely about them making poor choices.

I've no idea but after Heysel did Everton have an exodus of all their best players? Linekar joined the year after didn't he. How come no other club had their team break up or did they.

Of the Everton XI that started the 1985 FA Cup Final, six of the players,Southall,Stevens,Van Den Hawe,Reid,Steven and Sharp, plus Adrian Heath (who was injured back in 85) started against us in the 5th round of the FA Cup on 21st Feb 1988.Ratcliffe,Mountfield,Bracewell and Sheedy missed that match due to injury.

Lineker came and went as we know, but we lost Rushie and Mark Lawrenson.Jim Beglin was all but finished by Gary Stevens.Kenny rebuilt us better, but Everton spent big on Tony Cottee (£2 million) Ian Snodin,Pat Nevin and Dave Watson in the same time period.

Apparently the European cup was/is easy to win. All 6 of ours were easy. All none of theirs were easy too then I suppose.

In fairness, they were fairly clear on their criteria and, based on that criteria, it would be hard to disagree.

Do you think that there is a case for any non Man Utd or Liverpool side being the best English side ever? I don't.

The great City, Chelsea and Arsenal sides never won a European Cup, where as the former two did - it's hard to create a reasonable set of criteria that puts any of those three above the great Utd / Liverpool sides.

Carragher said the Arsenal side was the best English side he played against. Neville said the Chelsea 04/05 side was the best English side he played against. They were certainly great teams and recognised as such, they just failed at key moments in Europe that really mattered.
yes of course there is a case.

man city won a domestic treble last season.

to date, Arsenal are the only side to go a whole season without losing.

It was far easier to win the European cup when Liverpool won it in those days. Go back and look at the teams they played on a two legged basis to get to the final. Teams like the mighty Crusaders, St Etienne and Zurich.

the European cup is exactly what it is, a cup. The best sides in their own leagues don’t even win it most years. Liverpool being an example, they year they won it and finished 5th in the premier league.

The fact that bellend talks down St Etienne tells you everything he knows about football

They won 9 league titles between 1964 and 1981. And 7 in 10 seasons 67-76

Talking of easy rides to a final

UCD

Inter Bratislavs

Fortuna Sittard

Bayern Munich

Rapid Vienna

So barring Bayern who did they beat

They have a 20% win record in the European Cup/Champions league Inc qualifiers. Played 10 won 2 games

They've only ever won two ties in the competition beating borussia Monchengladbach on penalties  and the mighty Knattspyrnudeild Keflavík.

They've only ever made it past the quarter final stages in Europe once.

I guess all thos pre 1985 failures are somehow out fault aswell

Southall gone full bitter. Funny the way he said exactly the opposite at a sportsmans dinner I went to about 4 years ago.

It's the only thing they've got left to talk about.

And they  were in the final the season before vs Bayern, and the Favourite that year to win it !

Yep, they would just look like pathetic bitter twats.

Remember when Arsenal won the league at Anfield with the last kick of the season?. Liverpool fans stayed to applaud Arsenal when they were presented with the trophy. But its Everton who are the classy ones.

I remember it well. Sadly I was on the Kop that night. We were devastated, but we knew Arsenal were a great team and we acknowledged it. I remember the Arsenal team coming down to the Kop to applaud the Liverpool fans after they’d celebrated with their own supporters and O’Leary mouthing ‘thank you’ and giving us the thumbs up. There was a lot of mutual respect between the clubs.

Did we get Manchester United banned from Europe in 2013, because they seem to have followed a similar trajectory?

He joined in 1987/88.  Spain's European teams were

European Cup - Real Madrid

UEFA Cup  - Barcelona, Español, Sporting Gijon

Cup Winners Cup - Real Sociedad
