*Shakes head* Everton again.

2 semi finals and a battle for top 4?

that would be a great season for the blues.

That maybe true but our expectations should be and are much higher than that. Deflecting our failure by saying it would be a success for another team is just covering up the problem.

This season is a failure for us regardless if it would've been successful for another team

Kendall: Heysel hurt Everton

Former manager Howard Kendall says that English clubs' Heysel ban stopped Everton dominating Europe.

It is 30 years since Everton won the league under Kendall for the first time, their first title in 15 years.

English clubs won seven of the eight European Cups between 1977 and 1984, but Everton were unable to take part in the competition thanks to the ban of English clubs in Europe after the Heysel tragedy.

Kendall, who also won the league in 1987, believes that Everton would have gone on to join Liverpool, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest in extending England's successful run in Europe's elite club competition.

“It’s difficult. I think that the ban was harsh," Kendall said in an interview with The Set Pieces.

"When you think about five years… We’d had a very successful Cup Winners’ Cup campaign, we’d won the league, we were looking forward to challenging to be the best team in Europe.

"We believed we were the best team in Europe. It was just a massive blow for the club and the fans. We were denied the opportunity to be the best, because the Cup Winners’ Cup wasn’t the best.

"The European Cup was the best and we wanted to go on and win it.”

Quite right.

It's important to remember who the real victims are.

I think Howard needs reminding that Liverpool withdrew themselves from Europe even before any decision was taken to ban the rest if the English clubs. The ban was harsh and way over the top but it wasn't Liverpool's decision to ban everyone. Also the ban was a culmination of bad behaviour in general from English fans who had been smashing up places regularly. The national team weren't banned from entering the World Cup or Euros and they had some bad knobheads following them. I think England played Luxembourg in a qualifier and virtually the entire country was smashed up.

I think he's trying to make himself feel better for leaving them for Bilbao and the fact that by the time the ban was lifted they were too shite to get into Europe. I think the next time they qualified was in 1995.

To be fair, he's not talking about Liverpool.  He didn't mention us.  If he was asked a question such as "Do you think the ban affected Everton?", he's probably just answered it.  They've just quoted him.

Without the hics and slurs, obviously.

Yep but he's got previous for it, it just reinforces the convenient Evertonian excuse that everything is down to Liverpool instead of looking at why they went shit.

At least our fans can realise some of the reasons why we aren't winning the league every other year. Mainly due to bad leadership and business decisions in addition to Manchester United being the complete opposite.
