Stephen Cluxton plays in goal for the Dublin Gaelic Team. He is a total knacker and it is further emphasized by this article. He is throwing punches at the hapless McAteer during a charity match for Autism.

FORMER Ireland international footballer Jason McAteer has said GAA star Stephen Cluxton should apologise to the organisers of a charity match for throwing a punch during a row between the pair.

Dublin goalkeeper Cluxton hit out at McAteer during a charity soccer match in aid of Autism Ireland at Morton Stadium in Santry, north Dublin, on Sunday.

Cluxton lined out for Darndale FC, while McAteer was playing for Liverpool/Manchester United Legends.

Cluxton threw a punch at McAteer, knocking the soccer player off balance. Reports said that McAteer was fouling Cluxton throughout the match. Both players were sent off.

But speaking yesterday, McAteer apportioned the majority of the blame on Cluxton, saying a "bit of competitiveness" was normal at a charity game but nobody expected "a punch to be thrown".

McAteer apologised for his part in the incident, adding that he was disappointed by some of the comments on the social networking site Twitter on the incident -- in particular those made by boxer Bernard Dunne.

"I am so disappointed and I would like to say sorry to the organisers who went to the effort of organising this charity game. There has been a lot of stuff on Twitter from Bernard Dunne about how Cluxton is a hard man," he said.

Cluxton's Dublin team-mate Bernard Brogan tweeted the picture with the title: 'Cluckinator droppin McAteer' and said to boxer Bernard Dunne, "you would of been proud of that left hook".

Dunne tweeted: "Heading to Clare to hide out as I hear 'left hook' Cluxton is looking for a new sparring partner."

But McAteer dismissed the punch, describing the incident as "handbags".

He added that the Dublin goalkeeper had a "history of getting sent off" -- referring to Cluxton's dismissal in the third round of the All-Ireland Qualifiers in 2003 against Armagh, with then manager Tommy Lyons blaming him for Dublin's defeat.

"We know Stephen has a history of getting sent off. He was sent off in the infamous incident where he let a lot of people down in Dublin and it probably cost him an All-Ireland. I just feel it was a stupid thing he did," he said.

He said the punch came "out of the blue" and was disappointing as a lot of people had "paid hard-earned cash to see the game".

Humility

McAteer said Cluxton, who had no comment to make on the incident, should apologise to the organisers.

"This is not about him being a hard man, he should show some humility and maybe apologise, rather than make out he is a hard man," he said.

Meanwhile, Clutxon's manager says the punch should not "overshadow the charity occasion the players were both supporting".

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Dublin manager Pat Gilroy said the incident "should be let lie".

"We shouldn't be losing sight of Autism Action. That's the important thing," Gilroy said.

Kevin Whelan of Autism Action said the incident "was one of those heat of the moment things".

Despite the drama, the event was a great success and 3,000 tickets at €10 each were sold.

What an utter tosspot behaving like that during a Charity match.

McAteer has done some great charity work the past few years, he set up SoccerAid after the Tsunami a few years ago and has done a hell of a lot of good. Not only that, he's also one of the most clued up ex players in the media, he always spoke out against the parasites from Day 1 and always defends Liverpool's corner in interviews.

This cunt is obviously some wannabe hard man who thought he'd have his big moment lamping a big name ex footballer in a Charity match. Tough guy or what.

He's a total cunt. Has a reputation has being a hard man, and most of the time to the detriment of the team he plays for. However, its one thing carrying on like that in a competitive match to be behave like that at a charity match in aid of autism is inexcusable.

Fine. I'll apologise to McAteer.

Although, for a Meath man to be calling a Dublin footballer a scumbag when you had Graham Geraghty for all those years is a bit much!

Geraghty is a total ball bag. He was a talented footballer but a complete fucking idiot. When he ran for election in 2007 he was quoted as being delighted to be running for FF when he was running for FG.

He's fucked at the moment too, he owes PTSB €850k and cant pay them.

He sounds like an Irish version of Kevin Muscatt.

He's not at all really. He plays for my local GAA club Parnells and he's not a hothead, but what he did here was inexcusable. For McAteer to bring up a random seding off by Cluxton in 2003 to prove he is of suspect temperament is a bit desperate. McAteer was sent-off for Ireland in 1997 against Macedonia for trying to decapitate a player, yet Jason was never judged a hot-head.

Horrible judgement by Cluxton.

McAteer bringing up an incident from 8 years ago is a bit bizarre like, and it didn't seem like something he would even know about. Someone has obviously told him to say that I'd guess.

What I've heard is that Cluxton caught him late in a challenge early in the match, McAteer gave him the verbals. Over the next few minutes McAteer then continued to niggle and verbal Cluxton and Cluxton lost it, embarrassing for Cluxton and he's yet to come out and apologise, which I'm sure he will. McAteer's radio interview was cringy to say the least and yes, as he obviously had someone dig up dirt on Cluxton , but found very little.

Cluxton was a gobshite for doing it but McAteer's no shrinking violet in this mess either.

Sorry I'll just add this comment from elsewhere

"McAteer got his comeuppance by all accounts.

He squared up to Cluxton and appeared to attempt a headbutt, he was mouthing off all afternoon during the game, such a lack of class was very inappropriate considering it was a charity game.

Decking him doesn't make Cluxton a bigger man, but Trigger's behaviour was apalling aswell. "

also

"McAteer was the same when he played in Cork against Celtic Legends, mouthing off the entire game and putting in shitty tackles. "
