What car do you drive?

That's awesome mate. What are your plans for her?

Massive workshop envy going on here. I'd love a space like that to fettle in. True story - I was looking at a 1968 LHD Porsche 912 a couple of years ago. The thing was rotten but the mechanics were tip-top. You can literally buy every re-manufactured  body part from the States these days, so I priced it up - reckoned it needed about £6K spending on it to get it through its MOT, then it was just tarting up after that. Bloke wanted £2K for the car... If I'd had the space, I'd have done it.

Not 100% sure really. The car was bought when I was about 12 with the intention I would be able to play around with it (at the time I was using courtesy cars my dad brought home) and then eventually would be my first car, it got stripped to get some welding done and then sat around for 20 odd years instead.

It's bog standard other than the fact I put in a few of the strengthening brackets, which I sell anyway, which are standard fare for rally ones in the spots the shells give out with rough use.

Probably going to keep it pretty near to standard, maybe an LSD and if I can get time to do a little bit of work on one of the spare engines I have lying around give it a little bit of a power boost but that's about it. Having said that unlike most Escorts it's not entered Triggers Broom status yet, it's still the original engine, box, axle, doors etc. only new panels are floorpans (like pretty much every Escort) and the roof skin so I'm a bit dubious on that one.

Most likely it will get some semi daily normal usage plus the occasional autotest or navigational rally.

It's a 1600 Ghia, so close ratio 4-speed box, 85hp. Originally it was gold with a chocolate brown interior but I can't be living with that so it's going to be white with brown interior until I can source some seats for it as I have no Mk2 interiors in stock anymore.

I've also got a Mk1 which I've yet to start on which I intend to do as something with a bit more go, Duratec HE on throttle bodies, 5 speed box, proper axle etc. but that's waayyyyyyy down the line as I have a couple of BMW Compacts I am looking to build up as competition cars and whatever else crops up in the meantime.

Space is an issue, so I'm trying to finish off everything that is mine before I take on any other projects, had to turn down a proper 80s time warp 635CSi which was all white leather and solid as anything which I could have had for a couple of hundred but had no room and I had to let my Scirocco go last year because it would have ended up staying outside and I couldn't bare to see it end up rough because it was pristine and too good to let it sit there.

Plus as I'm self employed my own stuff goes down the list all the time, so it's mostly half an hour or so here and there and ends up dragging out and I'm also working on a Lotus 7 which belongs to my neighbour as he helps me out loads.

We are edging closer again. In fact I'm not so much edging as constantly making a mess of my underwear.

It's in the bit of the bodyshop with the weirdest lighting so it's picking up loads of reflections and shadows.

The sticker in the back is a dealer it went through at some point when it was passed through the trade before I got it and the one in the top corner of the back window is a local radio station and has MW and LW frequencies on it.

Not something I'd normally put in the car, but it's the original window the car was sold with (all of the windows have the chassis number and correct date markings for the car) and it's all part of it's history so they stay.

I'll have it back down to the house on Monday so that I can start getting the interior in and all of the doors built up properly etc.

  • 1 year later...

Not sure what I had when I last commented on this thread, but I had a midlife crisis a few years back and bought a BMW convertible. Great fun but utterly impractical to use in the Swedish winter. I traded it in for a GTI version of these. Easily the most fun car I have owned.

Manual and automatic Hyundai i10. Great little city cars and alot of car for the relatively low price. Blooming reliable too. Only had one problem, top rear brake light came loose and had to be replaced.

I drive a 66 plate 5 series.

It's lovely.

I didn't ask for it, but was just told I was getting given one, and while I pay an exorbitant amount in company car tax, it's hands down the nicest car I've ever had.

I got given it the day before Xmas eve a year ago, and have done 30,000 miles in it since and it's been lovely.

Company car will need renewing soon. Priority now is fitting in a baby and a 30kg dog whilst keeping them both safe and separate. I’m thinking Volvo XC90 or BMW X5. Anyone got any experience of either? Also, could I get away with either an XC60 or and X3 as I would prefer a smaller SUV for everyday use?

I've got the current X5 and it should be perfect for what you want, nice balance of practical and got a bit of pace to it, there's a new one out later on this year so either wait for that or get a good deal in the current one.

I've got a Golf, 160,000 miles on the clock, it's a bit shit, but hopefully it'll last me another 12 months as I'm saving for another 4 months travelling. After that I'll be buying something more suitable for my image as an international playboy.

This bad ass is still going strong with 211,000 miles and my image as an international playboy hasn't been affected.

I was considering an X5 and had a test drive, they are FUCKING HUGE. I’m sure they’ve got bigger over the last couple of upgrades. As I’m not a great driver (and the wife is worse) we discounted it early on.

Agree the 5 series is good - although that is a bit of a boat.

Yep. Fuck all wrong with Fiestas mate. Gets me to work and back just fine.

We actually got a sound deal out of it. The Scenic wasn’t without its problems. 140k on the clock. A water leak and couple of oil leaks needed fixing on it so I sold it to one of my birds mates for £600 when I really could have held out for £750-£800.

Another mate had a little bump in the Fiesta in a supermarket car park. Nothing major, just a tiny dent on the passenger side rear wheel arch. He’d only done 80k in it from new and had it serviced regularly so other than the little dent it seemed in pretty good nick. The insurance offered him £1200 for the repairs or £1400 to write it off. He’d had his eye on a new car anyway so he did us a solid by taking the money for repairs and giving us the car for the £200 difference.

Came out of it with a more economical, more valuable car and £400 in cash but then a month later the clutch went on it and cost me £350 to get replaced. Sod’s law.
