Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli to lead the way in bid to refresh the playing staff at Anfield - Telegraph

Director of Football Damien Comolli has been working since his appointment to identify priority targets and will receive support from the club’s owners, the Fenway Sports Group, this summer as the club seek to build a squad capable of getting back into the Champions League.

Kenny Dalglish, who is hoping to remain as manager, has spoken of the need to complement the club’s emerging talent with investment and it is understood that Comolli and his scouting team located two or three targets for each position they want to strengthen.

Most of these are aged between 19 and 24 as the club wants to invest in players whose talent can be developed and whose value will increase.

Rennes winger Sylvain Marveaux is expected to be the first signing when the window opens on June 1.

The club are being described as “a long way down the road” to securing the Bosman free transfer of the former France Under-21 international.

Liverpool are looking at further reinforcements in the wide areas, another striker, a left-back and cover at centre back. If enough players can be sold, there could be as many as 11 signings.

As they showed in January, FSG are prepared to reinvest money received in fees into the squad – most of the cash received for Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel was put into signing Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez for £58 million.

Having a high turnover will also allow the club to address the issue of the excessive contracts that were handed out under the previous regime.

With the club’s commercial department landing some impressive deals – a record £25 million-a-year kit deal with Warrior follows a lucrative contract with Standard Chartered as shorts sponsor – and the club freed of servicing the debts that impeded them under Hicks and Gillett, Liverpool will finally be able to compete in the market.

The recent emergence of academy players Jay Spearing, Jack Robinson and John Flanagan means Liverpool can sell their fringe players with the confidence that they will not be left short next season, especially as Raheem Sterling and Conor Coady are also expected to be ready next term.

There will be great emphasis on trying to shift as many of the superfluous players as possible.

The club are working on trying to set up deals for the players out on loan – Paul Konchesky, Alberto Aquilani, Philipp Degen, Nabir El Zhar and Emiliano Insua – while there has also been interest in David Ngog, Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Milan Jovanovic, all of whom are for sale.

Chris Bascombe is reporting that owners John Henry and Tom Werner promised to invest £30m as part of their takeover bid in September and will provide another £20m on top of any cash raised through player sales.

He goes on to say that Aston Villa pair Stewart Downing and Ashley Young, Bolton's Gary Cahill and Everton's Leighton Baines are all targets.

Comolli has also hinted at a bid for French midfielder Blaise Matuidi, a player he worked with at St Etienne, saying he ticks all the statistical boxes.

"In France, all the figures prove that the player who wins most possession at the feet of his opponents is Blaise Matuidi.

"That is an extraordinary strong point. When the team plays high, it means goal chances."

I've got family in Belgium and they've been raving about Lukaku for about 18 months now. I haven't seen much of him, admittedly, but he's impressed me the odd time I've caught a glimpse of him. Very much in the Drogba mould.

I'm sure some of the nerds on here will know a lot more about him than me though.

So is that £50m this summer plus player sales?

That was my interpretation. Despite the significant improvement in results and performances since Kenny came in, I still think we need 7-8 quality players signed this summer if we are to be a force next season and that may cost £75m+. FSG brought the club on the cheap and there needs to be significant investment initially if we are to be competitive next season.

Tottenham and Liverpool are in a straight shootout for Bolton defender Gary Cahill.

The England centre-half has been linked with moves to every side in the top five, with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal also said to be in the running.

But Harry Redknapp and Kenny Dalglish are believed to be the only two managers chasing the £15million-rated 25-year-old.

5 players to go straight into the first team (left back, centre half, central midfielder and two wide attacking players with pace) and I'd expect a title challenge if Kenny is given the job full time.

There is a hell of a lot of dross to get rid of mind.

Agreed. If we get it right in the transfer market this summer then we can challenge next season.

Absolutely. That is surely the way to go by having the younger emerging players as back up and signing players to go straight into the first team.

If we could get Baines and either of the Bayern lads that would be the defence sorted for years. Them plus Johnson, Kelly, Flanno, Carra, Agger and Robinson and we have an abundance of riches.

Then we can concentrate and the attacking players with pace.

2008

Dossena shit, sold for half we bought him for, a worst left back than Risse at twice the price

Degen injured whole season, terrible player, £10m 4 year deal for Swiss 3rd choice left back whose wages were still paying most of,IMO one of the worst piece of scouting this club has done

Keane sold 6 months later for £5m less than we paid and cost us £4m to pay off Keane, given he replaced Crouch in squad it greatly weakened us.

Caleveri(sp) £3.5m for a reserve keeper, sold at massive loss, pointless signing

Riera, £8m slow ineffective winger, sold for less than half we paid, after he assaulted a reserve player in training

Ngog, not bad given the cost in fairness, he hasn't progressed enough and should move on

It's all about opinions but I think 2008 was our worst ever summer of dealings, had we got that summer right we'd have won the league

2002 has to be worse surely

El Hadji Diouf

Salif Diao

Bruno Cheyrou

Yep, meant Dortmund, will still be very difficult to get either of them though.

Hummels is going to Bayern, he's more or less come out and said it as well as his mate Manny Neuer who this week said he'll be playing with Hummels next year

Subotic I doubt very much will move if this is the case.

Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli to lead the way in bid to refresh the playing staff at Anfield

Liverpool are planning a radical overhaul of their squad this summer with a source at the club revealing that they are planning “up to 22 deals” in and out of the club.

no, he means, when they took over they promised a 30 million kitty in summer 2011, then hodgson took us to the relegation zone so they realised a bit more was necessary, then kenny discussed more cash for investing in players as part of his contract negotiations so that kitty is now 50 million, if we dump aquilani, cole, brad jones, konch, poulsen, ngog, kyrgiakos and jovanovic that will net us about 25 - 30 million

el zhar, degen and insua will get us sfa and we should be thankful if we get them off our books at all

skrtel, kuyt and maxi probably deserve another year

so, and i know this is a bit football managerish, our kitty could be as big as 75-80 million (that's not even including commercial deals)

with all the talk of loads of players coming in and out i think that figure not unrealistic

7-8 players for that will be fine and don't forget a few of the players we are targetting are near the end of their contracts

75-80 million will get you

cahill (15) or sakho (11)

young (15)

downing (14)

adam(8.5) or mvila (15) or matuidi (12)

enrique (7.5) or baines (12)

marveaux (free)

wickham (10) or gervinho (14)

whatever combination of those figures you look at, we are looking at roughly a 75-80 million spend, give or take a few million depending on who we get

our starting xi next year could well look like this

reina

johnson cahill agger enrique

downing gerrard lucas young

suarez carroll

subs: gulacsi, carra, kelly, marveaux, matuidi, kuyt, wickham
