Liverpool have confirmed that they have rejected a £40 million bid for striker Fernando Torres.

The Spanish international has been linked with a host of clubs over the past 12 months, including Manchester City and Barcelona, but Chelsea have made the first move.

A Liverpool spokesman said last night: "Chelsea have made an offer for Fernando, which has been rejected. The player is not for sale."

Premier League champions Chelsea are believed to have had a £52 million bid for Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero and defender Diego Godin rejected earlier this week, and have now turned their attentions closer to home.

But having met stiff resistance from the Anfield hierarchy, it remans uncertain whether they will improve their offer for Torres, who has shown signs in recent weeks of returning to his best form.

Why would he go to a club on the decline?

because they have an owner who has a record of spending to improve his team. torres has never seen anything of that since he has been at liverpool, although there's been plenty of talk. rumours like this will always happen until we look like a side who has ambitions to be top of the league. it is unfortunate for the new owners of what went before - but it is what it is, players careers are short and they will be looking in the direction of the entrance door this window to see if they are getting any support from the boardroom. and to be honest after the lies we've all been fed, I don't blame them.

Totally agree with that but many fans have been far less sympathetic.

Liverpool have told Chelsea that Fernando Torres is not for sale after rejecting an offer in the region of £35 million for the Spain forward.

Roman Abramovich sanctioned the club-record bid hoping that it would be enough finally to snare Torres, a player whom the Chelsea owner has long admired and has attempted to sign on at least one previous occasion.

Liverpool dismissed any deal out of hand, informing Chelsea that they are not interested in selling the 26-year-old, who has shown signs of returning to the kind of form that marked him out as one of Europe’s most lethal marksman, a succession of injuries having reduced his effectiveness.

Confirming that an official approach from Chelsea had been received, Liverpool also made it clear that they would not welcome any further bids. However, Abramovich is said to be prepared to approve an increased offer as he attempts to reinvigorate a Chelsea side who have been pushed on to the fringes of the title race after a poor run.

“Chelsea have made a bid for Fernando which has been turned down,” a Liverpool spokesman said. “The player is not for sale.”

Torres’s future has long been surrounded by uncertainty and speculation, mainly because of Liverpool’s failure to challenge for honours since he joined the club from Atlético Madrid in July 2007.

It had been suggested that he would depart Anfield last summer but, after returning from the World Cup in South Africa, he vowed to remain, stressing that his “commitment and loyalty to the club and its fans is the same as it was on the first day that I signed”.

Though it was not publicised at the time, Liverpool had inserted a clause in Torres’s contract that would allow him to leave in the event of a club making a £50 million offer for his services. Chelsea’s bid falls some way short of that figure, but they remain hopeful that their interest could prompt Torres to seek a transfer, even though his £110,000-a-week contract does not expire until the summer of 2013.

Chelsea are pinning their hopes on the belief that another season of underachievement for Liverpool — they have suffered their worst start to a season since 1954 and have exited both domestic cup competitions — could push Torres towards the exit door, particularly given the strong likelihood that Kenny Dalglish’s team will also fail to qualify for the Champions League for a second successive season.

But having been recently taken over by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool are endeavouring to put together a squad that would prove to Torres and the club’s other top players that they can realise their ambitions at Anfield. FSG remains hopeful that a deal will be struck with Ajax during the January transfer window that would enable Luis Suárez to sign, a move that would underline their intent to recruit the best available talent.

Liverpool have already had a £12.7 million offer for the Uruguay forward rejected by Ajax, who are holding out for a fee closer to £25 million.

Reports emanating from the Netherlands last night suggested that Suárez has told a Dutch radio station that he feels “cheated” by Ajax for failing to reach a compromise deal with Liverpool. Ajax are insistent that the proposed transfer will be off unless it is concluded by tomorrow.

Liverpool have earmarked Suárez as the ideal foil for Torres, with Damien Comolli, the director of football strategy, confident that they would form one of the Premier League’s most lethal partnerships.

Dear Chelsea,

Thank you for your continued interest in Fernando Torres. Unfortunately, your offer is fucking shite, we don't want to sell the player and, to quote Fernando himself, he doesn't want to play for a bunch of jumped up, nouveau riche, Russian owned, cockney renboys.

Lots of love,

All your friends at Liverpool Football Club.

50 mill buy out means fuck all.

Nando will not go to them even if they come back and bid 50 mill.

It takes things out of our hands and gives Chelsea time to turn the players head.

We should be able to price them right out of it but unfortunately, we cannot.
