Aye, and no manager has ever come down from Scotland and won the league here. Well, they have, but we'll just forget him for the sack of it. We'll forget Mourinho, too.

It's a balls excuse.

Not read it anywhere but how about Rijkaard as manager under van Gaal?

Rijkaard was the captain of van Gaals Ajax European Cup win and was obviously a monster of a player and has also had all the success necessary at the other club we look to be modelling ourselves on in Barca.

Just my musings but I could see that working. Especially with van Gaal providing the bad ass that Rijkaard lost when ten Cate moved on

Would take a European cup winning manager over Rodgers or Martinez anyway

The prospect of André Villas-Boas becoming Liverpool manager has receded after the club's owners, who have offered Louis van Gaal the position of sporting director, cooled their interest in the 34-year-old.

Villas-Boas has been a frontrunner for the Anfield vacancy following Kenny Dalglish's sacking last Wednesday and hoped to hold formal talks with the principal owner, John W Henry, and the chairman, Tom Werner, as the Liverpool hierarchy settle on a shortlist for the post. The former Porto and Chelsea manager, however, has not been approached for an interview. While his candidacy cannot be discounted completely, he has seen his prospects diminish amid interest from Fenway Sports Group in Roberto Martínez, Brendan Rodgers and possibly the man they wish to oversee a new managerial structure at Liverpool, Van Gaal.

The Portuguese coach, who guided Porto to a league and Europa League double in his one season in charge before suffering an ill-fated spell at Chelsea, had made it known he was keen on Liverpool only to insist on Sunday that he was "still choosing the right project and that decision will take the necessary time". It has also been suggested that Villas-Boas knows a second failed stint in English football would cause irreparable damage to his career at the highest level, although his agent, Carlo Goncalves, has not ruled out a move to Anfield.

Roma have also approached Villas-Boas since he was sacked by Chelsea in March but are also keen on their former striker, now Catania coach, Vincenzo Montella. Goncalves said: "Liverpool and Roma? Well, what we are looking for is a [club with a] strong technical plan, that is solid and durable. Villas-Boas would like to return to coaching in these conditions, but if these conditions are not available, we would have no problems not working. I won't confirm or deny contacts with specific clubs. What we are interested in is a technical project, its outlook and a situation that has longevity."

Goncalves's words may fit with FSG's proposed vision for Liverpool but the new management structure envisaged at Anfield is still being put in place. Van Gaal has been offered a senior role at Anfield and, though he has not called time on his own managerial career and may ask to be considered as a potential replacement for Dalglish, is believed to be close to accepting the position of sporting director.

Martínez remains a candidate for the managerial vacancy and has held informal talks with Liverpool since they were granted permission to approach the Wigan Athletic manager last week. He has not met Henry and Werner in Boston for a formal interview and that process is unlikely to commence before the weekend. Martínez is on holiday in the Caribbean.

Another possibility for manager remains Rodgers, despite his public rejection of the offer of an interview last Friday. The Swansea City manager declined Liverpool's invitation on the basis he had no wish to be part of an extensive list that would then be whittled down, particularly as his work at the Liberty Stadium should be clear to FSG. Rodgers may be tempted if it was clear he was on Liverpool's shortlist and FSG are understood to be still interested in the 39-year-old.

Andre Villas-Boas ruled out of Liverpool FC manager hunt, boosting Roberto Martinez chances - Liverpool FC News - Liverpool FC - Liverpool Echo

ROBERTO MARTINEZ’S chances of being appointed Liverpool FC manager have been boosted after the club’s owners ruled Andre Villas-Boas out of the running.

Villas-Boas has been the bookies’ favourite to succeed Kenny Dalglish at Anfield but the ECHO understands the former Chelsea boss is no longer a candidate.

Following initial talks with the 34-year-old, the Reds’ interest in him has cooled and Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are pressing on with considering other options.

Wigan manager Martinez appears to be in the box seat but the Spaniard, who is on holiday in Barbados, has yet to meet principal owner John W Henry and chairman Tom Werner for a formal interview.

Swansea City’s Brendan Rodgers still remains in contention despite his initial reluctance to discuss the job when he was approached last week. Rodgers could be tempted if it emerges that he’s on FSG’s shortlist.

Villas-Boas hadn’t initially been on the lengthy list drawn up by FSG following the sacking of Dalglish.

However, after making it clear to Liverpool he wanted to be considered talks were scheduled and the ex-Porto chief swiftly emerged as a frontrunner for the vacancy.

Villas-Boas, who has also been linked with the vacant manager’s job at Roma, has been looking for the chance to re-establish his reputation following a torrid nine-month spell at Stamford Bridge which ended in March.

But that opportunity won’t come at Anfield after FSG decided against inviting him for a formal interview.

Liverpool’s owners are planning to hold talks with experienced Dutchman Louis van Gaal about a possible role for him at Anfield.

But reports suggesting the ex-Barcelona boss has already been offered the position of sporting director are wide of the mark.

Van Gaal, who has been out of management since leaving Bayern Munich back in April 2011, has made it clear that he would be interested in making the switch to Anfield.

However, the 60-year-old wants to be considered for the vacant manager’s job, while it appears more likely FSG would want him as sporting director alongside a younger boss in the new structure they plan to unveil at Anfield.

Until that meeting takes place, whether Van Gaal has a part to play in Liverpool’s future won’t be clear cut.

well, it WONT be villas boas

the echo is about as good a source as it gets.

Decent shout.

that sounds far too sensible an idea for our club unfortunately

the quote below is slightly worrying:

Following initial talks with the 34-year-old, the Reds’ interest in him has cooled and Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are pressing on with considering other options

if we wanted AVB - who in my opinion would have been a fantastic fit here - we should've pulled out all the stops to get him

FAIL

Well, there goes my hope that we had serious title ambitions.

Reading the tea leaves a bit, I'm guessing his wage demands were too high, and FSG said "Hm, well, we know a manager who won't complain about a relatively low wage and transfer budget. Ring up that Roberto Martinez character."

They're BOTH just as bad. AVB would have been awful.
