Rafa Benitez not to blame for Liverpool FC's awful start

Valencia won their second league in 3 years, so they weren't doing much wrong.

more testiment to the job Rafa was doing than the Valencia board imo, having to replace the players he did with relative unknowns for that level was nothing short of fantastic

Rafa was gone and was never going to win us the PL.

What a shovel of horseshit, Nick. 3 points away from it 2 seasons ago. Who's to say he would never have won it if he had the job for 4 more seasons with backing?

Tactically one of the top 5 managers in the world. Blame G&H, not Rafa. Jesus. And when people talk about wasted money, think Torres, Masch, Pepe & Alonso = £45m (off the top of my head) mill spent. Because of the mess the club were in Alonso and Masch left for £40m only leaving LFC the best goalkeeper and best striker in the world for £5m. Rafa was never going to win us the league, no, not with G&H. Sick of it.

All irrelevant really, and not for HGGOI reasons.

In the current era it's the challenge for rather than the winning of that is important.

Shankly got 7 years leeway because he'd already won it and was battling Mercer, Busby, Catterick, Revie, Nicholson, Clough and Mee.

Not quite as severe nowadays, despite copious references to wealth (Man City muhahaha etc) but still a pretty tall order.

Hopefully we get back to challenging for it in the next couple of years.

Needs a good bit of money to be spent, though.

The one consistent element in the failure to win the PL in the last 10-12 years no matter who was manager was the ever-present Carragher and Gerrard, They are still ever-present as captain and vice-captain. They should take a large share of the blame for past failures and for the sneaky undermining of Rafa and other players and the appointment of Hodgson.

Even the England team had its worsed ever performance in the final rounds of a World Cup under Gerrard as captain.

John Aldridge, Ireland and Liverpool Legend is Red All Over - Sunday World Sport

Jesus.

Some reasonable points but for God's sake leave Istanbul and Cardiff alone.

What good does that ever do?

Do you think it was Rafa's refusal to bow down to Heighway, and seeing him fucked off that has caused this resentment among our former players?

Because I'm fucked if I know why they detest him so much.

Molby seemed to back him a lot while he was here, but once he wasn't was far more critical.

Once houllier went there was also a lot of "never liked him anyway" revisionism.

It could also just be a detestation of complexity.

There's too much Rafa The Great/Rafa The Cunt stuff and the same with Roy (okay, not so much The Great!) that is truly dispiriting.

That piece is so b/w that I'd be tempted to look for the ghost writer's influence more than anything.

Rafa would have won us the league if we had been sold to someone other than G&H. they ruined our chance of wining the league and set us back massively. Rafa got us so close, we just needed to push on and get those extra couple of players to make the difference. Instead we had to make a profit in that and the next few transfer windows.
