This was Anfield.

As an armchair supporter(!) I've noticed recently how only a few of the players pay homeage to the "This is Anfield" sign on their way to the pitch. As we know, every player used to touch the sign on the way out and I was surprised to see just the one hand do the deed in recent matches.

Guess who?

To be fair to Owen, he can't reach it!

As a supporter, I'm stupidly superstitious. If the LFC calendar's on the wrong month, we play badly (although we don't necessarily lose). Can't wear the shirt on a match day etc etc etc... I thought players were more superstitious than us. SO WHY DONT THEY TOUCH THE SIGN???

Should be put in their contract I reckon!

Or am I just talking bollocks?

I read somewhere that the players are supposed to have agreed not to touch it until they've won the League. This could of course be bollocks but at least it's a good set up for a few jokes from the pessimists on here.

You're spot on. It's something that has rankled me for a couple of years now. Fewer players have been touching the sign every year since Houllier became manager.

Someone told me (don't know if it's true but it wouldn't surprise me) that Houllier had instructed players NOT to touch it as it was "living on past glories". (!)

Hmmm...
