Ressies 4 Crewe 1

Fabio Aurelio made a successful comeback as a strong Liverpool Reserve side beat Crewe Alexandra 4-1 in a behind closed doors friendly at Melwood on Tuesday afternoon.

The Brazilian left-back played for 30 minutes and looked sharp, making several good runs forward, before being replaced by Jack Robinson.

Ryan Babel was given another outing up front and he can be pleased with his efforts as he scored one and made another.

Maxi Rodriguez was also on the mark as he produced an impressive display on the right side of midfield, while Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Brad Jones and Jay Spearing also featured for John McMahon's side.

The Railwaymen took the lead after 22 minutes when Adam Dugdale headed home at the back post following a free-kick.

Liverpool's response was instant when Maxi's inch perfect through ball sent Babel clear and the Dutch international made it 1-1 with a sweet lob.

Liverpool's No.19 then turned provider when his run and cross down the right found Tom Ince who slotted home for 2-1.

With Sammy Lee watching on from the sidelines Liverpool continued to play some excellent football with Spearing, Maxi and Ince at the heart of their good play.

Argentine ace Maxi made it 3-1 on the hour mark with a superbly crafted goal. Spearing found John Flanagan down the right hand side, and the young full back nutmegged the Crewe left back before his inch perfect low cross was turned into the net by Maxi.

Ince netted his second and Liverpool's fourth near the end when he fired home after Spanish starlet Suso had been denied by a superb save from Steve Phillips.

David Amoo, twice and Nathan Eccleston went close to extending the lead, but overall Lee and McMahon can take a lot of positives from this performance.

Liverpool team: Brad Jones, John Flanagan, Fabio Aurelio (Jack Robinson 30), Steven Irwin (Suso 55), Stephen Darby, Sotirios Kyrgiakos (Conor Coady 60), Maxi (David Amoo 70), Jay Spearing, Ryan Babel (Nathan Eccleston 66), Gerardo Bruna, Tom Ince.

Speaking after the game Lee said: "It was good to see Fabio back and it was always planned that he would play just the 30 minutes.

"He wanted to play for longer but we have to be careful and make sure he's right and properly fit before we bring him back.

"This was a good exercise for us to give some of the lads a game and Crewe are always great to play against because they play football the right way and are a good club.

"It's better than any training session because you cannot replicate in training what a football game gives to you.

"Ryan showed his ability and took his goal well but he has to do that every day and week in, week out. He knows that and he's working hard at it."
