Phil Neal was the best in my time although we have been spoilt a bit in this position from Chris Lawler onwards.

The weird thing ( I mentioned this in a thread and got a lot of stick ) is that our left backs have to my mind been universally ordinary over the same period.

I wouldn't go that far but they have certainly come up well short of our RB's, but to be fair how many sides can boast of a succession of players like that?

I was a right-back at school when Phil Neal was our undisputed number two and he was my boyhood hero. Rob Jones was superb and was in the same bracket as Phil Neal but for me its Markus Babbel....I am gutted that he only got one season before illness finished him but what a season that was ! I just loved the way he played - and I met him and a mate knew him well and spoke highly of him.

I think it is down to age etc, most on here never seen Phil Neal play so it is impossible to vote for him.

In order for me it would probably be Neal, Nicol. For consistency and period of time they held down that position.

Other mentions to Markus, Jones and Finnan but in no way can any of those three be compared to the two above.

That said people just have favorites and length of time and injury record etc does not come into it.

I suppose best and favorite are two different things.

Hermes...I am 46 so if I was asked to pick LFCs best right back that I have seen play it would be Phil Neal - as I said he was my boyhood hero cos I played RB myself - but the poll says "favourite" and there was something about Markus that season - he was incredible. Added to that I have met the guy a couple of times and he was sound plus a mate did some work for him and got to know him quite well and said he was sound. Overall he is one of my favourite LFC players ever.

To explain my Jones vote, he is my FAVOURITE. Neal was excellent, but never my favourite. I used to think he was irritating, and that was before I was the cynical twat I am now. Nicol was an extremely close second but I think Jones shades it because he was a shaft of light in what was otherwise a very dark time.

I find it really hard to separate out 'favorite' from 'best'.

Neal may have done a few twattish things off the field, but I don't care about that at all. I only care about what he did on the pitch and, on that basis, nobody comes close to him in my view.

Nicol was a likeable chap, Babbel also seemed fairly decent, and Rob Jones too. But Phil Neal was, to my mind, the best right back in the world for a long time, and gave service to the club that few have ever matched.

I can't look beyond that.

Favourite and best.

For you.

Again, Phil Neal is the undisputed best right back we've had (excluding Lawler because I've not seem him play as I'm not an old cunt - I'm quite an old cunt).

But Stevie Nicol's smile, effort for someone that looked liked football didn't come naturally, and his goals make him my favourite. Neal was more machine.

I think Neal was the best, look at his medals so by default he's it.

My own personal favourites have been Jones who got my vote. Being a Jones myself I loved him when I was little and he not got injured he'd of played many more times for England and indeed for us.

The same could be said about M.Babbel, had illness not cut him down in his prime he could of been the best.

To sum up, Rob Jones is my own personal fave, Neal the best.

Honourable mention to Chris Lawler also.
