Hodgson on Torres

This whole thing started from just a small insult. It takes little effort to spout out insults. Its harder to respond with some dignity though, something thats not practise by alot of people in this here forum.

Be it age or inexperience one could respond something with "No I did read the article and etc etc" rather than "bitchy twat" and "Back to the kitchen to make me a sandwich love. And put your nickers back on."

Err perhaps because it was a paraphrased response of some of the shite I first got on here when I joined and revealed I was a woman.

Was??

Anyway, I've never met you or ever seen what you look like but I guarantee* I'd give you one.

Torres ‘will not go the same way as Mascherano’

Tony Barrett

Roy Hodgson says that Fernando Torres has his heart set on remaining a Liverpool player this season.

The manager revealed yesterday that the Spain striker has informed the club his immediate future lies with them, despite strong interest from Manchester City and Chelsea.

The proclamation contrasted sharply with comments by the Liverpool manager at the weekend, in which he said he could “not do much more” in terms of keeping Torres at Anfield.

Liverpool have harboured fears throughout the summer that Torres could depart, to such an extent that Christian Purslow, the managing director, has held several rounds of talks with the player’s representatives from Bahia Internacional aimed at reassuring him that the club will be able to compete for football’s biggest prizes once they have been sold.

According to Hodgson, those discussions have resulted in Torres pledging to spend this season at Anfield. However, the concerns of the Liverpool fans that their £26.5 million record signing could depart will be assuaged only if and when the player pledges his future to the club publicly.

Hodgson, though, is convinced that Torres will stay with Liverpool and is looking forward to welcoming him back to pre-season training on Monday after an extended summer break in the wake of Spain’s World Cup success in South Africa.

“As far as I know he is looking forward to coming back here,” Hodgson said. “He is back on Monday. He is enjoying a holiday — a well-deserved break as he has not had one for three years. He is spending a lot of time with his family, keeping a low profile and as far as I know he is not really speaking to anyone.

“But he has told us that he is looking forward to Monday, looking forward to getting back to work and looking forward to playing for Liverpool next season. That is what I know so other reports, I would suggest, are erroneous.”

Hodgson’s ebullience was tempered only by his admission that Javier Mascherano has informed him that he no longer wishes to play for Liverpool. But rather than acquiesce to the demands of the Argentina captain, Hodgson has told Mascherano that he will be allowed to leave only if it is in the best interests of the club.

That the midfield player has only two years remaining on his contract makes it likely that Liverpool will cash in this summer, with Inter Milan his most likely destination, and Hodgson’s vow to continue to treat Mascherano as a Liverpool player regardless of his wishes is more an attempt to make it clear that he will not allow the player to leave on the cheap.

“I think he wanted to leave a year ago. But he has a contract and I expect him to honour that,” Hodgson said..

“I expect him to be a Liverpool player until the day the club chooses to accept an offer for him. I shall continue to treat him as a Liverpool player. The mere fact that the player is a little bit unhappy with his situation does not mean he will leave.”

FERNANDO Torres has told Liverpool that he will shun the prospect of lucrative moves away from Anfield and is committed to spearheading the club’s revival.

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson moved to end the uncertainty over striker Torres’s future yesterday by claiming he will remain on Merseyside.

Torres will now be under pressure to publicly underline that pledge when he returns to training next Monday, but Hodgson’s comments will be a huge fillip for the club’s supporters, who have seen Chelsea and Manchester City circle the Spanish striker all summer.

“Torres has told us he is looking forward to playing for Liverpool next season,” said Hodgson, whose side fly out to Macedonia today ahead of his first competitive game in charge against FK Rabotnicki in the Europa League qualifier tomorrow.

Hodgson’s comments yesterday were at odds with quotes attributed to him last weekend, when he said the World Cup-winning Torres had “problems” with the club following a series of broken promises over much-needed investment.

But Hodgson’s insistence that Torres now wants to stay will serve to bolster the sense of optimism at Anfield following skipper Steven Gerrard’s decision to remain at his boyhood club and the signing of Joe Cole, even if Liverpool confirmed Javier Mascherano wants to leave.

Hodgson and Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow flew out to Spain last week to try to convince Torres that his future remains on Merseyside and Hodgson said: “As far as I know he is looking forward to coming back here on Monday.

“He is enjoying a holiday – a well-deserved break as he has not had one for three years – spending a lot of time with his family and keeping a low profile.

“As far as I know he is not really speaking to anyone, but he has told us that he is looking forward to Monday and to getting back to work and playing for Liverpool next season.” Argentina captain Mascherano asked to leave after meeting Hodgson on Monday, but Liverpool have warned him they will play hardball over his hopes of rejoining former manager Rafa Benitez at Inter Milan.

Liverpool will seek about £25million for Mascherano and Hodgson said: “Yes, he wants to leave the club. He has made that perfectly clear. He wants to leave now but he is contracted to Liverpool, so whether he leaves or not will be our decision.

“He is a Liverpool player and will continue to be treated as a Liverpool player until such a day arrives when he no longer is.

“The mere fact that the player is a little bit unhappy with his situation and would prefer to leave does not necessarily mean he will do.”

Fernando Torres returns to training at Liverpool on Monday

Torres’ holidays are coming to an end as the striker prepares for his to return to Anfield on Monday. The World Cup winner with Spain will join his Red teammates for the start of the 2010/2011 season as Liverpool chase title glory on four fronts.

Goalkeeper Pepe Reina, and Dutch pair Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel are the only three players, plus Torres, who have yet to join new manager Roy Hodgson for pre-season training.

During his 20-day break, Torres has been recovering from an adductor injury he sustained during Spain’s World Cup final win over Holland.

Following Rafa Benitez’s move to Inter Milan to take over as manager, Fernando Torres will now be working with the former Fulham boss Roy Hodgson. The striker will also be joined by three new players: Milan Jovanovic, a striker who joined from Standard Liege; Danny Wilson, a young central defender who made the move from Glasgow Rangers; and England midfielder Joe Cole, who joins the Reds from Chelsea.

Although still in July, Liverpool have already started their Europa League campaign. The Merseysiders beat FK Rabotnicki 2-0 with David Ngog grabbing both goals. Roy Hodgson’s side were without their Spain and Holland internationals from the World Cup plus english Steven Gerrard, Jaime Carragher, Glen Johnson and Joe Cole. The four England players remained on Merseyside to follow personalised pre-season training programmes.

Liverpool’s pre-season started with a cancelled match (due to poor weather conditions) against Al-Hilal. The Red’s finally enjoyed their first minutes against Swiss side Grasshoppers Zurich (0-0) before playing German outfit Kaiserslautern, in a game which ended in a 1-0 defeat for the Anfield club.

With the Merseysider’s European campaign already underway, next is the turn of the Premier League. In just over a fortnight Liverpool start the domestic season with a mouthwatering clash against Arsenal. The Gunners will be the first visitors to Anfield on August 15, before the Reds face Manchester City a week later.

  • 6 years later...

People need to remember that.

Klopp may have his flaws, but he's the best manager we can possibly get, ever, and the crowd need to remember that every matchday, and when they're bitching on forums. Because as hard as it is to lose the title to Chelsea, it's a lot harder to consider what we would do next when Klopp leaves one day.

Fucking bounce.

Rodgers isnt any better and we kept him for three years letting him do much more damage.

Even though I disagree with that (we finished second Rodgers, Hodgson's tenure was an unadulterated shitfest), there is an argument for taking a chance on a young manager.

Hodgson had proved through an entire career he had nothing to do at Liverpool.

And even after that fiasco, he was deemed the best candidate to lead England. It really beggars belief.

The funny thing is it persists. Former Fulham defender Brede Hangeland recently launched him as a good candidate to manage Norway . . . .
