I didn't know Malaga was now owned by a Qatari royal - I guess that's what those tweets about him being in that part of the world not so long ago were all about - if he gets them playing like Villarreal with some of that wedge backing him and minus the Real politics I could see them joining the group of teams in contention for 3rd place within a few years.

If it were Mourinho who'd had the same season at Real Madrid last season, he'd be laughed at and labelled a failure. Especially since his winning the league with inter wasn't any great shakes due to all the money he had there. He couldn't fail with all that money, apparently.

Yet, when a club spends near enough £200m in one summer and then goes on to win the square root of fuck all (including being knocked out of the Spanish Cup by a third division team) somehow, that manager is lauded and hyped as the fella to push us on. Despite him not winning anything of note in his career.

he may have taken Villareal to a CL semi, but I'd say that was comparable to Hodgson taking Fulham to the EL final.

Right.

While i agree with your general point, he achieved a club record number of points and was only beaten to the league by a team amounting the most points (and largest percentage of available points) ever in La Liga.

There are lots of things Pellegrini got right at madrid, the Raul situation being probably the most obvious one, but for them not to win anything after spending that much on a squad that wasn't all that bad in the first place ultimately goes down as a failure.

I think he did enough to deserve another year at the very least.

I know “he” spent £200m on players, but if you look at the amounts paid it really doesn’t sound as bad as it’s made out to be.

Kaka - £56m

Ronaldo - £80m

Benzema - £25m

Alonso - £30m

Of those players Only Ronaldo and Alonso can be considered a success and with the way things work in Spain, were they really “his” signings? To me they smack of a President wanting to create another “Galactico” team…

I don't think that type of thing exists in Spain does it? I kind of agree, but if there's a better manager - i.e Mourinho - might as well get him in.

Again, agree. But he'd been working in Spain for years, so he knew the methods the clubs use when it comes to transfers. I'd also wager he knew a fair bit about Perez as it was his second term as president.

Also, I have to concede (and this kind of poo poos my argument0 Pellegrini was never Perez's choice; he was Jorge Valdano's. He was probably onto a loser from day one. So, in that sense, Robbie has a point.

It doesn't matter if he bought those players or not, he was given arguably the best player from each of their respective leagues and Xabi Alonso to boot.

He won nothing, his team where good, but they had to be good they had so much talent in it.

Barca were also a weaker team, for me. Letting Eto'o go and bringing in the plank was a mental piece of business. also, Iniesta was out most of the season.

Again, having said that; Messi was fucking amazing again and Pedro stepped up to the plate, so Eto'o's goals were shared amongst the other attacking players.
