I'm in germany seeing a mate and we went to to see Gladbach last night. Great stadium and great atmosphere but I was amazed by the number of fans with half Gladbach half Liverpool scarves and even Liverpool shirts. There were literally hundreds.

Apart from the European Cup connection I can't see why they'd have any affinity to us, can anyone help?

Borussia Mönchengladbach - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

''Off the pitch, the fans have developed a bond with fans of Liverpool FC, having played against each other in a Uefa Cup final and a European Cup final in the 1970's. It is a friendship that is developing every year with supporters of Liverpool FC travelling to Borussia Monchengladbach annually and vice-versa. After the Hillsborough disaster, fans of Borussia Monchengladbach donated a large sum of money for the Hillsborough fund. They also provided the opposition for Emlyn Hughes' Testimonial game at Anfield. Many "Borussen" wear Liverpool shirts and scarves in the "Nordkurve" (the BMG Kop) during home games''.

Look up the teams together on Google. Wikipedia have this little snippet on the Gladbach page.

Liverpool to visit the BORUSSIA PARK

To mark the club's 110th anniversary, Borussia have lined up a pre-season friendly against top-quality opposition in the shape of Premier League giants Liverpool.

Borussia will usher in the 2010/11 campaign by hosting the 18-time English champions at the BORUSSIA PARK on Saturday, 31 July (kick-off: 1530 CET). "Liverpool are worthy and attractive opponents for our anniversary who are likely to ensure our stadium is really full," said director of sport Max Eberl.

With 18 titles to their name Liverpool are England's most successful team alongside Manchester United.

Borussia have faced the Reds five times in their history. In 1973 the Foals were beaten 3-0 by the English side in the first leg of the UEFA Cup final, which meant the 2-0 win in the return was not enough to lift the trophy. In 1977 Borussia lost 3-1 in the European Cup final, and a year later the two teams met again at an earlier stage of the same competition. Gladbach won the first leg of the semi-final 2-1, but were knocked out after losing 3-0 at Anfield in the second game. Despite the explosive nature of these clashes a deep friendship arose between the fans of the two clubs that has been maintained to this day. After the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, when 96 people lost their lives, Gladbach supporters collected money for the bereaved families, thus reinforcing the friendship. "This was just one of the reasons why many fans in both camps have longed for the teams to play each other again in a friendly," said club secretary Stephan Schippers. "We've now succeeded in reviving an old tradition in time for the club's 110th anniversary." Tickets for the game will go on sale on 24 April.

Fan party after the game

After the opening pre-season friendly against Liverpool a huge party will take place for the fans on the BORUSSIA PARK site. Thousands of Borussia supporters and friends are also expected to attend the family day on the Sunday (1100 to 1800).

MAY 2009: A group of Liverpool FC supporters recently made their 3rd consecutive Friendship visit to Moenchengladbach in Germany to once again consolidate and enhance even further a very special friendship that goes back over 30 years to the 70’s decade. Liverpool and Borussia Moenchengladbach met in the UEFA Cup final in 1973, Liverpool winning 3-2 on aggregate and they also met in the1977 European cup final in the eternal city of Rome where Liverpool FC won their first ever of their five European cups, the Reds running out 3-1 winners. The two European giants met again the following season 1977/78 in the semi-final of the European Cup, Liverpool winning 4-2 on aggregate. Since these famous clashes their has been a very special friendship between the two sets of supporters which has resulted in Borussia MG supporters travelling to Liverpool every year since 1992 during the Bundesliga winter break to support the Reds at Anfield, and Liverpool FC supporters led by annual friendship visit organiser Graham Agg, have travelled to Gladbach annually every year since 2007.

In 1991, a delegation of Borussia Moenchengladbach supporters travelled to Liverpool to present a cheque for 21000 for the Hillsborough families, an amazing gesture that has NEVER been forgotten on Merseyside.

This year’s LFC supporters Friendship visit to Moenchengladbach took place from Friday 8th May to Monday 11th May 2009. The trip involved a free of charge stadium tour of the impressive 54000 capacity Borussia Park, Borussia’s new home since 2004, which even has a suite called the “Liverpool” suite! Liverpool supporters were also in the sold out Borussia Park to support Borussia in their penultimate home match of the 2008/09 campaign versus local rivals FC Schalke 04 and saw Borussia, who are fighting relegation from the Bundesliga top flight win 1-0 with a goal in the last minute. The Liverpool FC supporters were invited to an all day match day party in the Borussia official “Fanhaus” with amazing scenes of celebration after Borussia’s last minute victory.

Just 15 minutes before Gladbach’s home match the Liverpool supporters were invited on to the Borussia park pitch for the third consecutive year to once again present to their Borussia hosts a “Friendship flag”, a tradition the LFC fans started in 2007. Liverpool supporters this year also unveiled a second flag with the numbers “96” in which all the victims of the terrible Hillsborough disaster were embroidered on to the flag, this was to honour the victims of the disaster and hopefully one day bring the families the justice they deserve. The Borussia supporters on the famous “Nord Kurve” standing terraces then greeted their Liverpool FC counterparts by singing an amazing rendition of “You’ll never walk alone” and chanting “Liverpool, Liverpool.” This for many LFC supporters was the highlight of the visit and was a moment to treasure and many LFC fans were clearly moved by this amazing reception.

Liverpool supporters watched the LFC’s away victory at Upton Park versus West Ham United in the Borussia Moenchengladbach official “Fanhaus”, which amazingly also has a whole corner dedicated to Liverpool Football club. The outstanding 3-0 victory versus the Hammers was celebrated by Liverpool & Gladbach fans in the bars, pubs and clubs of the Moenchengladbach Altstadt (Old Town).

The 2009 LFC Supporters annual Moenchengladbach Friendship visit was once again fully endorsed by Liverpool FC. Brian Hall, Liverpool FC Public Relations manager, for the 3rd consecutive year presented Friendship trip organiser Graham Agg with a Liverpool FC official pennant autographed by esteemed Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, and the legendary George Sephton, stadium announcer at Anfield since 1971, and better known as the “Voice of Anfield” also sent a nice gift which was also presented to the Borussia Moenchengladbach Supporters Club.

This year almost 70 Liverpool FC supporters made the trek to Moenchengladbach, the vast majority from the Merseyside region but there were also LFC fans from Birmingham, London, Crewe, Ireland, Switzerland and a small group of German Reds from different parts of Germany.

Graham Agg, organiser of the annual Friendship visit stated that he wishes “to thank Thomas “Tower” Weinmann (Borussia MG Fan Liaision Officer), Matthias Neumann & Jonny Thomas Polcher (BMG Fan Projekt), the Borussia Moenchengladbach fans and the citizens of City of Moenchengladbach for their unbelievable hospitality and friendship shown to the Liverpool fans during their stay. He also said that he would like to thank all the travelling Liverpool FC supporters for being superb ambassadors for Liverpool Football Club and the City of Liverpool”. He stated that “even over 30 years later this very special friendship between Liverpool FC & Borussia Moenchengladbach shows no signs of abating”.
