Reina - made several smart stops and clearances. He was close to saving the first penalty, and was very unfortunate to be booked. Time wasting my arse!

 

Johnson - poor distribution in attacking positions, and struggled to cope with the pace and skill of DiMaria, who was excellent.

 

Carragher - generally solid and coped well, but after we went down to 10 men, I think he dropped too deep, which forced the whole team further back in an effort to remain compact. Caught out for the second penalty in that his arm was inadvertantly raised, although he could have given one away earlier with his shoulder-high challenge on Cardozo.

 

Agger - struggled in the air against Cardozo, and had a major lob-on with the inept ref all night. Great bit of quick thinking for his goal though. Had it reached him in the air, he might have closed his eyes again and hoped for the best!

 

Insua - his suffered from poor decision making all night, and got the runaround from both Aimar and Ramires. Needlessly left a leg out to bring down Aimar, and got booked for an earlier challenge, rling him out of the second leg. Our whole left side looks decidedly threadbare for the second leg as a result, with only Benayoun as an option.

 

Mascherano - strangely ineffective display, although the team being a man light meant he was chasing all the time and trying to fill gaps in midfield.

 

Lucas - had to cover a lot of ground after the sending off, so spent more time trying to shield the defence, rather than anything productive.

 

Kuyt - his work-rate really shows in these situations. He made a fine assist for Torres, but couldn't provide antything meaningful in the circumstances.

 

Gerrard - spend more time chasing the play after having to drop back. His first-half set-piece delivery was excellent, yet poor in the second. Quick thing for the free kick which led to the goal.

 

Babel - no impact in an attacking sense, as he never managed to beat his man. Very soft sending off although he did raise his hand. His red card changed the pattern of the game because we were well in it before then.

 

Torres - didn't have his shooting boots on apart from his disallowed goal. He was getting kicked all over the park with little to no protection from the officials. Thankfully he didn't show any real dissent for once, being a booking away from suspension.

 

Ngog (sub for Torres) - had to fulfil Torres' role of lone frontman when he came on, and had no chance to make an impact.

 

Benayoun (sub for Gerrard) - no time to make an impact.
